  1. The entire roster and coaching staff is coming to the Shining Star Sports program. The team decided to make a change and the Shining Star program was a good fit. Coach Davis will continue to coach the team.

The Shining Star Sports-Pittman team will still be together and play for Shining Star Sports. They are coming off of a very successful AAU season and look forward to building off of that success.

Both of these teams are very talented and will represent the Shining Star program very well. Both teams will play a very challenging tournament schedule.

This merger will allow for Shining Star to have two of the top teams in the state of Kentucky and will draw a great deal of attention for all of its athletes. This is a very talented group of kids that will feed off of each other.

Should be a very exciting spring/summer for the program.

  2. I know when I went through SK would do it spairingly but seldomly to play varsity, atleast not inititally. I know Mike Brock played up his freshmen year but he also went on to be on All State player, it certainly didn't happen frequently. I would think that it would be different for each coach rather than each school per se.

Simon played a freshman last year in Cody Chambers.

  3. There's no doubt that Pelle is a very good player, but he plays a 2. NKU has been loaded with shooting guards for years now. You have to recruit what you need. Bibbins is a very good point guard and that's what they needed at the time. Sorrell is a very good player but had to red-shirt because they were loaded at his position.

Pelle is a point guard. Played point at Silver Grove, played point for Shining Star and is playing point for West Liberty. Had a 169 assist last year as a sophomore.

  4. Setty does not come close to the talent and hustle of Zollo! Setty is not a bad player but Zollo gets the edge there. He has been getting looks from D-1 schools since his freshman year and never really got his legs under him last year. I look for him to have a break out year. As far as Robbie Stenzel, with him all you can do is try to slow him down because you are not going to stop him! I hope Mason keeps underestimating GRC all year!:sssh:

I disagree. Zollo may have gotten more attention as a freshman and a sophomore but I think that Setty has become a better player. Not taking anything from Zollo because he his a very talented players as well. Zollo may not be the best player on his team. I think that Stenzel and Setty are the best two players in their class.

Setty will put up huge numbers during his junior season. He is a major inside/outside threat. He shoots the 3 at a very high percentage, has really improved his ability to use the bounce and has very good post game. I also believe that he has become a pretty good defender and understands how to use his length.

In my opinion Setty will challenge for Mr. Basketball in the state of Kentucky as a senior.

  5. 1. You're not giving Pohlgeers enough credit with "pretty solid." Very strong offensive game. I'd guess he'll be an 18 to 20 PPG guy this year.

    2. I'm not understimaging Mr. Daniels. I just don't recall which player he was. I'll take your word for it.

Pohlgeers has a nice stroke from the perimeter but there is no way he scores 18 to 20 a game. How many kids in this region scored 18 to 20 a game last year??

He is a spot up shooter that needs someone to create shots for him. Most of the shots he got last year were because defenses had to focus on Romes and Buettel.

This team lost a lot with the departures of Romes and Buettel and will struggle to score points.

  6. Maybe they are making room for Trevan Brown down low? I think he is more of a true post player.

Expect a very nice season for Trevan Brown. He is a relentless rebounder and runs the floor very well. He will give them a lift with his energy and effort. They will have to move Andy out of the post when he is on the floor.

    T. Brown will really help Boone this upcoming season.

  7. I can tell that you coach or help coach high school basketball by the comments you make. You apparently have not been around AAU basketball, you have never played AAU basketball, don't have a kid that has ever played AAU basketball nor have you ever coached AAU basketball. Your comments are stereotypical of some of the trash that pertain to unique instances.

Overall AAU basketball is great for the kids that participate. Unlike high school coaches that get paid to do what they do (I will admit that it is not much at times) AAU coaches do not get paid for their effort. The majority of the coaches have the best interest for the kids and dedicate many many hours to practicing and traveling with the team. Actually, I would say most of the coaches don't even have a kid on the team.

AAU basketball starts out in the third grade and goes up through the summer before their senior year. From third grade to eighth grade they start playing in the fall and finish at the end of July. Once a kid get to the 15U-17U levels they only play April, May and July. I guess you would rather see these kids sitting at home playing with their Play Station III.

AAU basketball gives kids the opportunity to play against the top competition at their age level across the state and nation sometimes. You can't get that at the local YMCA league. Most teams practice and play dozens and sometimes up to 100 games in a season. AAU basketball is one of the reasons there is so much parity at the college level now. Kids get to play year-round.

A comment like "AAU in general is not good for the game of basketball" shows your lack of knowledge or experience with AAU sports.

What you've stated above also happens in high school basketball. It just depends who is coaching the team. I've seen high school basketball teams exactly like you described above. If a kid learns bad habits, it's up to the high school coach to change his/her way of play. I would much rather see a kid playing ball during their off time than sitting around doing nothing or getting into something they shouldn't be getting into.

I've seen a lot of AAU games and no matter how many games they play in a weekend, if they are a competive team they always play hard. They may be wore out but they don't give up and quit playing.

SHADY PEOPLE? Give it a break! There are shady people everywhere. Sounds to me like you are running with the wrong crowd! Or maybe this is another one of your stereotypical comments.

  8. Had a chance to speak with Tregg and ask him about the schools that are interested in him. Tregg had a great summer and is looking forward to getting the season started at Mason County.

He told me that Xavier, Virginia, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Wright State, Miami, Tennessee, Kentucky and Notre Dame are all in contact with him and communicating with him.

SIU has offered him a scholorship.

He has also gotten interest from Oregon State, Virginia Commonwealth and Oklahoma State.

Tregg took a visit to Notre Dame this past weekend. He was very impressed with the campus and the facilities. He felt that it was a very good visit and is looking forward to a possible offer from the school.

A very impressive list of schools are showing a lot of interest in Tregg. Good luck to Tregg in the recruiting process!!

  11. The season has come to an end for the Shining Star Sports-McFarland team. The team lost to the Florida Rams by a score of 62 to 58 in Orlando at the AAU Division I Nationals.

The loss puts an end to one of the best seasons in Shining Star Sports history.

    • 46 wins and only 9 losses for the season.
    • Undefeated in pool play for the entire season.
    • Kentucky AAU State Champions.

The roster included some of the top players in the state of Kentucky and Indiana:

    1. Clay Coleman of Ryle
    2. Andy Earls of Boone County
    3. Will Evans of Lexington Christian
    4. Austin Flannery of Scott County
    5. Mike Gabbard of Boone County
    6. Donovan Gibbs of Iroqouis
    7. Chad Jackson of Scott County
    8. Stephen Kowolonek of Highlands
    9. Dylan McDaniel of New Albany
    10. Josh Sewell of Trinity

Congrats to Coach McFarland, Coach Stowers and Coach Flannery on a fantastic season!!
