All the proposals in the world aren't going to change recruiting in Kentucky High School sports. If the Board of Control isn't going to punish the schools that do it, then it will continue forever. And I don't mean by making a team forfeit a game or two. Get tough or make it open enrollment statewide and go from there.

Basketball is of little importance to most of the people going to LexCath. The halls are not full of superstar athletes ..just kids like in any other school. Like I said earlier, it's the adults who made the mess and can't seem to put sports in the proper perspective.

You still haven't addressed my points. How is it that many highly touted athletes end up at at Catholic? While basketball and sports may be of little importance to most people going to Catholic , It is of great importance to the administration. Basketball, in many schools,is a primary revenue generator for other non-revenue sports. Why should the privates have a different set of eligibility rules? Please enlighten me.

The more I look its not the privates, its the public BOE's that are hurting themselves

Re-read the post. It is not a Fayette County boe policy that is the constraint. It is the KHSAA.

Why should it be necessary for public schools to hold athletes prisoner to play for them? Are they and their parents not making the decision that they believe is best for them? Should they be held hostage? Should parents be penalized for making decisions that they believe best prepare their kids for life as an adult?

 

Given Kentucky's population density, splitting public and private athletic playoffs makes absolutely no sense. Public schools are doing their best to shoot themselves in the feet.

 

Travel expenses, which have already skyrocketed with the cost of gasoline, will go up as teams are forced to travel further to play games. The quality of competition, particularly for public schools and small private schools, will go down. In short, the only people who will be hurt by the proposed change are the student athletes at every school in the state, both public and private.

 

In fact, I think that the large private schools, such as Trinity, St. X, and Covington Catholic would actually benefit by being forced to playi a better level of competition. The public schools in Ohio and Indiana have always shown a willingness to play the best private school teams that we have to offer. The gap between public and private school sports programs in Kentucky will widen if the split takes place.

I agree. I am against the split. But things are not equal. What if, as a parent , the best school for my child is Tates Creek? I am constrained by the current system. I have one option: 1) sell my house and move into their district .

It's a great school and a viable choice to people who want a faith based, disciplined, college prep curriculum.

If you see no problem with it, why shouldn't these players be allowed to attend the school of their chioce? Athletes who enroll at Catholic are not subjected to meet the same qualifications of eligibility if they enrolled at a public school. Have you not been paying attention?

There's not any mass exodus of kids who play sports coming from the public school into Catholic. .

Agreed ...not a mass exodus. However, when you have the cream of the crop, mass numbers are not needed.

Here is a list of players from public schools (not coming from a parochial school feeder) that have played boys basketball in recent years at Catholic. These are just the ones I can remember....feel free to add others as i am sure you can .

I am not that familiar with the Frankfort area but are there any private schools that are KHSAA members in that area?

No. There are no private high schools affilliated with the KHSAA in Franklin County,or any of the surrounding counties. Here is a list of surrounding counties: Owen, Scott, Woodford, Anderson, Shelby, Henry.

The problem is this: Because of the regulations of the KHSAA in addition to the enrollment poilcy of Lex. Cath., many local schools have seen their top athletes travel two counties away to attend LCHS. In addition, many Lexington public schools have seen thier "In-district" athletes opt for the Knights. There are a lot of people that have a bad taste in thier mouths after being drubbed by a team that has a clear and competive advantage because of the policies. The vote (although I oppose it) , was simply a message sent by the member schools to the KHSAA that they have endured enough, and want some tighter restrictions.

What Catholic High school should those 3 have attended?

Lex. Cath. is a GREAT choice for those so serious about wanting to keep their kids in a Catholic School. But i wonder if they would have still made that choice if they weren't allowed to participate in varsity sports. I do know this: the older brother of that LCHS girls' squad (who wasn't nearly the athlete) didn't make that drive to Lexington. Two others mentioned in the article on the boys squad (Brendan Woody and Will Graham) aren't Catholic. :lol:

The full article states that during the 2005 girls 11th regional playoff, ther were 8 players from frankfort on the floor at one time. Five with Franklin County jerseys and 3 wearing Lexington Catholic. Although I am against seperating the public/private schools, this is laughable. Oh.........and here's some credit to Lex. Cath !!!!!

Nope, I went to school there last year. There is no transportation provided by the school, sorry.

I must be seeing things then. Maybe I need to take my medication.

Just for the record Lexington Catholic has no bus system.

Do they have a shuttle bus?

With all due respect ALLWORKNOPLAY, there are other schools outside Northern Ky. Many have (and still do) some or all of these practices.

#5 is true....not false....the "bus" referenced is a small passenger bus with bench seats. Holds about 10.

Point by point, somebody tell me if there are any falsehoods here.

1. Both Public and Private schools in Kentucky recruit players.

2. Jobs are offered to players parents in the county or city of the school in

order to have an official change of residence.

3. Some parents actually choose to move based solely on athletic

reasons.

4. Private schools generally have an easier time recruiting.

5. Some private institutions send busses two or three counties away each

morning to pick up their star players.

6. Some public institutions knowingly submit a false address in order to make a

student eligible.

My point is this: There will always be inequities in consideration to the ease of recruiting of a player. People will continue to find ways to make kids eligible. Consider a rural community with no manufacturing jobs as opposed to an urban area. There will be more opportunities to find work for the parents in the urban setting. Therefore, the urban public schools would have a competitive advantage over the rural public schools. What do you do then? Is there a solution? In my opinion , YES. Change the rules for everyone. The way to solve the the problem is to make the rule cut and dry. Something like this: Each high school athlete is allowed 1 transfer during his varsity career. One and one only. Sure there are a few details to work out, but both sides recruit. Their means of recruiting are different only because of the limitations the current system.
