  1. Is it the talent level at Trinity that makes them dominant year in and year out? Or is it the coaching staff that has the ability to take kids to the next level? In other words if Trinity's coaching staff switched places with a coaching staff from a 2A or 3A school, not at all saying the coaching staffs at this level aren't good, do you think that team will perform in a similar fashion as Trinity is now? The players may not be as big or as fast at the smaller level as they are at Trinity, but as far as the execution is concerned, do you think it will be similar?

It just seems to me that the Trinity coaching staff is the best in Kentucky. They are able to make every aspect, from passing patterns to how tight the spiral is on a long snap, look easy. Every athlete at Trinity is very gifted, but without a good coaching staff no one will be to understand just how gifted they are. IMO

  2. Unless I am mistaken - is that not what it is all about? How to adapt - who makes the fewest mistakes, who rises to the occasion, who is able to overcome their miscues?

Welcome to the bright lights of the 'Pizza box". Seems to be always a "reason" or explanation. "What if's" does not really mean or prove anything. Have to admire Ryle for their effort and for making the Final. But you know the result - no if's ands or buts.

Will Sat. night be simply a repeat of the 'hated' Rocks handily winning over the NKY Powerhouse of the DAy ???

Thats my point. Everyone is saying Trinity vs Ryle part II but if SK comes out and does what Ryle didn't do, then they will keep it close to the end. Ryle would have kept it much closer if they didn't do those things. Simon Kenton will give themselves a chance in the end if they do play mistake free football, rise to the occasion, and overcome the miscues.

  3. Now I know it was thrown to the guy "that could change directions in mid-air"......BUT he was rather slow....he MAY have scored but the jury's out on that....

We had 421 yards in 59 plays, to Ryle's 198 in 54...they had less than 3 yards per carry...and 4 out of 13 passes.....It was never going to be a nailbiter..

He would have been close to scoring. There was a T player there along with another Ryle receiver. It would have been close. But either way it would have been a great momentum booster...for the time being lol

If the player catches the first pass it opens up the run game just a bit more than when he dropped the pass. not saying we would have gained 200 more yards, but it sure would have helped a little bit. i would say probably 100 of those came from petrino scrambling when all the recievers were covered. t never got a great run game established, but their passes were great. they were timing routs that ryle wasn't used to defending. the game would have been much closer than the score appears if several things go the other way. if murray doesn't fumble 2 times then t gets the ball inside their own 20 instead of midfield/ryle 40

  4. For anyone who really remembers the Ryle vs T game a couple of years ago, Ryle shot themselves in the foot in the first half more than anything. Dropping a pass that couldn't have been thrown better the first play that would have gone for 6, 2 uncharacteristic fumbles, shutting down the T receivers only to have Petrino scramble for 20 yards after not having an open receiver...and several others. Ryle also had a goal line stand from the 1 against the T offense. My point is as long as SK doesnt hurt themselves and become their own worst enemy they will stay in the game. They may not win but they will have the chance to in the end to pull it out

  5. No one has asked the question so I will:

How bad and where was the foul that resulted in the PK?

Let's just say if I didn't know any better I would have thought it was George Clooney out there playing soccer. :D

But from my perspective it looked like a good hard shoulder to shoulder battle for the ball. The Highlands player fell over, whethet it was a flop or not, and got the call. IMO if the Highlands stayed on his feet, which he could have done, then there wouldn't be a call. But that's just part of the game.

  6. He probably did stop his watch. The official time is usually kept on the field by the officials and the scoreboard is just a guide in this case. The NFHS rules do allow for the official to stop time during the match. Time is stopped in high school matches after a goal, a caution, a disqualification, an injury, or at the referees discretion. "Stoppage time" usually refers to time "added" on at the end. That does not occur in high school soccer per NFHS rules. Unlike NFHS rules, in FIFA rules, the clock runs throughout the match so "stoppage time" is added to account for injuries, goals, etc that occur while the clock runs.

Thanks for the explanation! I think if Ryle plays the first half like they played the second half, with a sense of urgency to score, its a different game. In the first half Ryle only kept two guys up on offense and left it up to them to get the scoring done. In the secnod half they finally put 4 and 5 guys up on offense when the ball was in the Highlands zone. Of course they were down by 1 and 2 goals, but the ball stayed in the Highlands end for most of the second half. Good job by the Highlands defense/midfield to keep Ryle from scoring 2 in the second half. If only Ryle wanted to score in the first half instead of keep Highlands from scoring the game might be different. But congrats to Highlands and I hope you guys represent northern kentucky well!

  7. Neither the NFHS Rules Book, nor the Case Book, specifically says whether it is legal or illegal. Officials argue about it all the time. Here's the interpretation that I'm going with:

From Rogers Redding's NFHS Football Rules:

"Example 3-19. After the ready, all Team A players are set. As A53 snaps the ball, B72 reaches in and knocks the ball away. RULING: The umpire must decide whether the snap was illegal or B72 encroached.

It is highly unlikely the preceding example could occur without a foul. In practicality, for a defensive player to knock the ball away, either the snapper would have to hesitate after lifting the ball making the snap illegal and thus allowing the opponent enough time to touch the ball, or the Team B player would have to put his hand into the neutral zone before the snap."

In the context of the situation described in this thread, a highschool team taking a knee in the last seconds of a game, swatting at the snap should result in an encroachment foul against the defense. To quote HeyRef, "nothing good can come of it".

I'll leave open the remote possibility that it could be a legal play if it happened some time earlier in the game. But that's a different can of worms we can discuss separately.

Great explanation! Thanks for the clarification

  8. Sounds to me that Boone Co. has the best team in the state. With all that talent no one can match up with them. From a reality standpoint, Boone is not the most talented team in NKY. They have a great coach who knows how to prepare a team week in and week out no matter what the skill level of his players are. Coach Thompson has Boone County playing sound, fundamental football right now. However, as noted in a previous post, it has been the big pass play that has beaten Ryle the past couple of weeks. I'm not saying Boone's passing game isn't good enough to make a big play, but with the backup qb in, it just makes it that much harder. Whoever can play the full 4 quarters of football tonight will come out with the W. I don't believe it will come down to "the big play".

    Boone: 14

    Ryle :14

  9. Well in my opinion there is still a problem and nobody will ever be able to compete with Trinity and X not in my life time. Some schools have a bigger budget and also have more kids to choose from or should we say pull from. Not knocking what is right but in 6A everyone is playing to be a semi finalist and 5A I think Highlands will be in the state finals for the umpteen years. I still disagree with the different rules the private schools have over the public schools. Does anyone know how many of the teams in the finals are Public VS private schools. I know I am opening up a big can but it is true, if my son wanted he could right now decide he wanted to go to Owensboro Catholic next year and we could say the reason we are doing it is because we changed religions and he would be eligible instantly as has happened in this town before recently. Not gripping because we got beat I just think there needs to be a level playing field for everyone and right now I just don't see it. It is almost like the BCS in a way but the BCS has killed college football because the best teams will not be playing again this year because they play in the SEC. The only thing we can hope for is Trinity or X one loses a little bit of enrollment and one of them falls to 5A so they can both win a state title every year instead of having to play each other every year to win one. HaHaHa! I think maybe they need to change the classes based on team size not school enrollment. BG had our team out numbered tonight I bet 2 to 1 and when you have a varsity number of 96 to a team with say 45 to 60 what are the odds that the smaller team will win the game. Evansville Reitz won the Indiana 5A title this year and when they walked on the field they had to start coming out with about 5 minutes left on the clock so the last guy out of the locker room could be on the side lines before the start of the game. How about teams are classified by performance then you would have better games and closer games. I really do not know how you fix it really would be hard in my opinion.
I completely agree. And the different set of rules has taken away the best part of high school football, which used to be the excitement of seeing which team is "up" this year, happens to have a great group of kids, talent, who just happened to be at the same school and came together as a dedicated team to win state. The thrill of winning and watching those type of teams win is what high school sports is all about. Those teams still exist, but their season ends somewhere short of a championship as they run into schools with a different set of rules. So at their banquets they have to talk about their great season, but are denied talking about their championship. The 6A system did nothing to change that, just giving two more teams who have different rules a championship.
  10. How is Beinke experienced lining up in the shotgun? How experienced is Beinke when it comes to him winning the game on his shoulders? Sure he has alot of experience handing the ball off and making a few throws a game, but he was in a new situation the other night.

Benke's sophomore year...it was his first start in a varsity game and it came in the playoffs against Fern Creek. It was 4th and about 10 with the ball on Fern Creek's 40, out of field goal range, with 20 seconds left and Ryle down by 2. He completes a 15 yard pass, as if he had been doing it for 4 years. The rest is history, but he has been in that situation before and knew how to handle it. He did a great job with it.

  11. Uncalled for? Or unpopular?

Who said a coach wants the penalties? I said that his attitude , which can be beneficial at times, also can be a detriment as players are not smart enough to know what they can do and what they cannot in the name of being aggressive.

I repeat uncalled for. If you are going to speak negatively of someone publicly, you should have first hand facts, not heresay and opinion as though it is fact. I am not defending Ryle coaches, does not make a diff to me, I am saying your comments are uncalled for and unfounded

by any facts. so back to the game.....

Congrats SK, you earned the victory!

  12. The feeling among many that I've talked to is that Ryle takes on the personality of the head coach. So, unsportsmanlike penalties are not a big surprise. I think his aggressiveness spills over to the players. Tonight, it may have hurt them.
This is simply untrue and uncalled for comment. This was a spirited game, personal fouls on both sides. Saw an SK player kick a Ryle player after the play, got called for 15. Not saying SK was dirty, just pointing out it was emotional both ways, just football. But do you really think a head coach wants 15 yards against him? Do you really think those players will not hear about it and pay a price in practice? Lets talk about the hard game that was played and how SK wanted it more.
