  1. Geez, lighten up. I'm a huge Highlands supporter, and even I find the Covcath cheering section quite funny. I didn't know that separation between church and state had to apply to cheers at a football game. Sounds like sour grapes!

This isn't about the stupid cheer. Its about an attack on Coach Matney. Jeez...follow the thread.

  2. I agree with Tatertot on this one. Even if Matney said that CovCath has an advantage over JC, why does it matter? Most of the coaches in the state agree with that point of view. I don't mind debating the merits of the arguments in general, but to single Matney out seems a bit much.

Thank you! I have friends at CC I hadn't seen in years, and I'll be in the 'ville supporting you. I just can't tolerate people with an agenda blasting a man I (and we) care so much about. Like I said, a coach addressing his team, especially in that emotional situation with so much on the line, should be able to console his players without this kind of nonsense. Thanks again, and beat BG worse so we can at least brag about that!!

  3. I don't think CovCath "invented" the "God's on our side" cheer!! I've heard it many, many times, by multiple schools' cheering sections, dating back a long time. I believe it's a tongue in cheek reference, to the many times the Catholic schools have been chided over the years for their religious based schools. No offense intended!!

None taken, as you can tell. Never was an issue here, although I can see why it would be offensive to other Christians. You've probably also heard many people (at least according to the papers) express an opinion on the public/private issue. Why is an opinion on that issue, by a coach or anyone, such a topic of conversation? I was in the circle of players and fans, and what Coach said is being distorted and assigned meaning which I know was not intended. Its juvenile, and disgusting, and has no business being a thread topic. Just defending my coach, as would anyone who supports and appreciates their coach.

  4. The truth is that CovCath played completely within the rules. They played on JC's field. They had the usual advantages that go with being a private just as JC had the usual advantages that go with being a public (Do all of JC's players live in rural Johnson County or do some live in Paintsville, etc.?). CovCath won convincingly. The game was not close after CovCath got adjusted. The reason CovCath won is because they were and are the better team. Nonetheless, JC can be proud of what they accomplished.

I don't think any live in Paintsville, and if one or two do, its only because annexation expanded to them. Regardless, there are no athletes I know of who have transferred from Paintsville to Johnson Central. Too many restrictions.

  5. In case I missed something there is a little difference between a grown man that's a coach making a comment versus 15 and 16 year old kids. Besides if you lost your sense of humor in the last week or so that cheer was OBVIOUSLY very tongue in cheek, a joke in other words. Don't take things so personal from a group of high school kids and certainly don't compare the two.

I'm not really comparing the two, just saying those arrogant cheers were in public, and whatever Matney said was very private. There's no comparison. Whatever coach Matney said was a mere opinion, and was directed to a bunch of heart-broken players and a few parents. It has no business being debated, because it wasn't a public statement. But between the one "actual" cheer, and the totally unverified and supposed "comments" (opinions), I know which is much easier to defend. One more thing, coach Matney nor any church I know of would support, or even tacitly support, such a cheer.

  6. Note, God is on our side, as he is on everyones side, nothing wrong with cheering that out loud. I would think that any Pastor would love to hear his church members shouting that out everyday....

All I did was react to a statement that was posted on this web site that your coach is alleged to have said that upset me very, very much. It had to be posted by someone close enough to your school to be allowed in this meeting. This person did post it, blame him not me, but if he didn't post it then no one knows about it. If the coach didn't say it, then no foul, but the water has been muddied, and the coach should come clean one way or the other, to put this to an rest.

They didn't say "God's on everyone's side". They said "God's on 'our' [Covington Catholic's] side". They could have said "everyone's", but they didn't, because that's obviously not what they were saying. No one took it personally, or expected the Catholic church to face the media, but its pretty darn offensive and arrogant, and obviously supported by you and everyone else associated with the school in Covington. It was blatantly public too, as part of a celebratory rehearsed (complete with choreography) ritual. Just a little something to chew on before you, or anyone, support a thread like this. I'm trying to defuse it, and think it should be closed. At the risk of having an opinion, its no one's business, and shouldn't have been resurrected in the first place.

  7. I attended the Henry Clay-Trinity game last Friday at Henry Clay. What a beautiful facility HC has! Football field, softball/baseball field, etc. And it's all for free. Trinity would die and go to heaven for those types of facilites at no cost..........to say nothing of the school building (at least as it appeared from the outside). Is HC representative of most public schools outside Jefferson County? If so, then the playing field (literally) is pretty darn level right now.

I don't quite understand. Why don't the Trinity parents just send their kids to nicer schools and facilities like Henry Clay and save their money? If that was sarcasm in your post, I apologize, but it sounded sincere.

  8. "We went toe to toe with one of the states premier football powerhouses tonight and held our own. The parochial school get to go out and recruit the states top athletes. Now, if anyone tells you thats fair they're either crazy or a liar. We went up against the best the state has to offer and we held our own. There's no reason.....no reason for anyone on this team to hang their head and think that they're somehow less of a football player or we didn't deserve to be here"

    Guru,

It isn't worth it to fight on-line about what was said or wasn't said, but sometimes you have to say something, just to let those who say such things know, that they are not true.

I have received quite a few E-mails from many of the Eagles fans thanking me for my words about being in Paintsville and having a great time. I can only hope if and when (and it will happen one day) we host JC, they can say how nice we treated them, when they come north....

However if the Coach said what I have in bold, then I have a problem with it. CovCath like HHS, Beechwood and other great schools don't have to "R". Yes many former Alums, or former Parents, might tell their friends about CovCath and all the advantages to going there both academically and athletically, but the school administration nor staff does nothing wrong at all, in fact they are most probably more careful than most, because of who they are.

The "R" allegations and level playing field, and separation stuff is getting mighty old. Just seems funny that no one and I mean no one complained when a certain public school recently got hit with a fine for using an ineligible player. Have that happen to HHS, Beechwood or a Catholic HS, and it is all over BGP's in a heart beat.....

I had a great time in Paintsville, was treated like a king, saw a great football game, but if the coach did say what is alleged in bold at the top, he should apologize even if it were said in private. He should talk to a reporter, and either deny or admit to the allegations to end this for once and for all.....

The rediculous thing is you don't even know what our coach said or didn't say, yet you insist on making pure speculation almost factual, as evidenced by you highlighting a lie. Its none of your business what our coach says to his players, just like its none of our business what your coach, or you for that matter, say to your's. No matter what a coach says (and he certainly didn't say what you highlighted) to players and parents, he certainly has no obligation to talk to the media and apologize to anyone, and certainly not you, for expressing an opinion. What he said was personal, and intended to stay that way. He wasn't conducting a press conference. He was talking to his players and leading the team prayer as he has done for three years at JC. Speaking of prayer, don't you think your student body should apologize for chanting "God's on our side", in public (not private) during the game?

  9. Money isn't an advantage for some private schools. The private school in the 1A finals has no home field and I think you would be hard-pressed to find a team in the state with a worse practice field. And the coaching staff is probably the lowest paid.

They do have a lot of support from parents, boosters, students, and fans.

Wow, didn't know all of that. Good luck NewCath, you've come a long way since Belfry. Didn't mean to suggest anything negative about money, but just the opposite.

  10. I wonder if they really did have a passing game! If so then what was the coaching staff thinking. The running game was outstanding all year but against a strong balanced team like CCH a balanced offensive game would have been more beneficial.

They certainly have one, but we didn't see it much through the season. I'm speculating, but I suppose all the blowouts were the main reason. Speculating further, since JC was moving the ball on the ground most of the night, and didn't take the lead until the second half, I suppose the coaches felt JC could continue sustaining drives on the ground and keep it close. In about a 10 minute span, everything fell apart. Blake Johnson was injured early in the 3rd, and he was carrying tacklers all night. Down 17-14 in CC territory, a fumble. Burned on a long pass play for a TD. One of the few passes batted down at the line. And number 20 for CC was also a difference-maker, after not playing much (or not being a factor) until the second half--he beat the JC defenders on the slant almost at will. Everything happened so quickly. But I agree, we probably shouldn't have continued to keep it on the ground, eating up clock, in the 4th quarter.

  11. The rules regarding athletic competition are the same for everyone. What you are seeing are enrollment differences between districts which can affect athletics although they are not controlled by the KHSAA. For instance in Louisville there is open enrollment, any kid can go to any school in the district they choose. The whole concept of who can go where is NOT the purview of the KHSAA, it is up to the individual school districts to determine what they will and will not do in regards to boundaries and so forth.

This is the problem we keep having. Everyone abides by KHSAA rules but not every district's attendance rules are the same. It is not so much the "esoteric gobblygoop" as it is understanding what the rules for athletic competition are who is responsible for those rules. They are two seprate entities essentially. Attendance boundaries and limits are determined by individual school districts, not some overrarching authority in the state of Kentucky.

    Does that help any?

Sorry for the delay. It does help, and after talking more with old friends of the family from CCHS I think it really boils down to smart people planning years ahead. These programs get heavy involvement from boosters, from hands-on comforts (meals, etc.) to large donations that most schools don't enjoy. You hear so many things, but I think I'm understanding much better. I guess the real advantage is money, which makes everything else much easier. Nothing at all wrong with that.

  12. I am learning that the rules are a bunch of essoteric gobblygoop, and I would like the know what the big advantage private schools enjoy that public schools do not. Personally, I believe there is a huge advantage, but everytime I think I know why, I get informed that there really is no advantage at all. I'm really not sure. I just can't understand why, if we're going to crown a state champion in anything, that the rules should not be EXACTLY the same for everyone. If they are, what's the debate? If they're not, then how can that be? These are high school kids who have to play by rules established by supposed responsible, moral adults. Its a no-brainer. It should be uniform, completely. Where else do you see this kind of disparity? The NCAA has uniform rules, public or private. What's the difference? One big difference is that we are talking children trying to reach a pinnacle that, unbeknownst to them, they have no real possibility of ever reaching. If there are in fact clear advantages for one over the other, we should all be ashamed of ourselves. If there are not, the contratulations to the handful of private schools who predictably dominate the carpet and glory. Personally, I would rather lose as we did tonight. As sad as it may be, its a valuable early lesson in lefe.

  13. InTheloop, you have given me the biggest reason, to pick CovCath over JC other than just being a fan of CovCath. CovCath understands how good they have to be to win, and even you admit that JC doesn't know how good they are. The difference is that CovCath has been pushed most weeks when they have played high quality, top flight football teams, while JC has mostly played teams that the quality is some what questionable. No CovCath hasn't won all those games, but even when they lost, it taught then what they needed to do to win the next game.

Not trying to be smart or even trying to be funny, just would like a fair and honest answer! Do you, really think JC has played as tough of a schedule this season, as compared to CovCath?

Boone County Won 44-2: Boone made 4A playoffs. Beat semi-final 4A Ryle in regular season 34-22

Cin Elder Lost 13-3: Down year, but even in a down year, they are are better than most Kentucky teams. Beat HHS at HHS...

Dixie Won 28-7: 4A team, made 4A playoffs. Lost to semi-final Ryle by 2 and 12.

NCC Won 35-14: 1A Defending State Champion. NCC is still playing.

Beechwood Won 34-0: Not the best season for the Tigers, but if NCC wasn't in their region, the Tigers would still be playing. Maybe one of the top five 1A teams in the Commonwealth.

Cin St. X Lost 23-3: Lost to at the time to the #9 rated team in the USA Today's Super 25 teams in the Country. Was only down by a score of 10-3 when the game was stopped by weather near the end of the third quarter. Reschedule for play less than 12 hours later (I still don't know why they didn't play later in the day) but with the drive home and drive back to St. X, I don't think our guys got five or six hours sleep. CovCath learned that while they lost, they could play with the big boys.

Col Bishop Watterson Lost 38-13: Two years in a row after playing Cin St. X CovCath came our flat against a better opponent. It wasn't pretty, but CovCath learned a lesson.....Be mentally and physically prepared for every game....

South Oldham/Grant County Won both: Inferior opponents and the only reason CovCath plays then is due to district requirements. Both games were over before the 1st quarter was over.

The Team from Ft. Thomas Won 29-27: Nothing that JC has done all year could come close to this game. On live TV, at Ft. Thomas, in the cold, rain, windy, raw mist of a night, with 51 seconds left in the game and down 4 CovCath drives the length of the football field to score with 3 seconds on the clock... Great game, big confidence builder for CovCath.

Grant County Won 49-0: Second verse, same as the first....and I am glad for Grant County, that they won't have to play CovCath again....

The Team from Ft. Thomas Won 25-15: The score of the game did not indicate how badly CovCath beat HHS in this game. What did was seeing the HHS fans leaving about half way through the third quarter....

LexCath Won 56-49: CovCath beat most probably the most athletic team from Kentucky, that I have seen all season. LexCath "O" was a thing of beauty, and if JC can match the fire power of LexCath then hats off to JC, but LexCath....man oh man, what a team on "O".....

Now please match your schedule up. Will it mean anything on Friday, not really, but it will help CovCath be prepared for a top flight football team like JC, but can JC say the same thing about their schedule? Good luck and see you later today.....:thumb:

Man, that is impressive. We watched that first CovCath/Team from Fort Thomas in the hotel after mud-wrestling Mason County the night before. It looked like 2 college teams out there.

  14. Really? CovCath has played LexCath, Highlands, Cincy St. X, Cincy Elder, and Columbus Watterson. If JC is quicker than LexCath or Highlands or more physical than Cincy Elder, Cincy X, or Watterson, then I will be most impressed.

    :thumb:

We're the Ohio teams quicker than CC? I was also surprised to see that Beechwood and Newport Cath's defenses were so much more effective than Lexington Cath's.

  15. Has to be Ashland , they beat Red Army , Devils and Portsmouth West ... ( couldn't pass this up )

Seriously ... Highlands ... without a doubt , head and shoulders above 3A type play I have seen so far this year including Ironton Ohio ...

Ashland is improving and I will be rooting for them come playoff time ...

You do realize that Russel and Belfry are both 2A teams right? You've got to be kidding me if you think they are the best. Not taking anything from those two teams, but Ashland is a 3A team, and when you can barely beat a 2A team, I dont consider you one of the elite in 3A then. Not to mention that Raceland beat them, and they are 1A if I am thinking straight... How many non-district games does Ashland have that are against teams in 2A or under? Thats three right there, and they play P-burg Friday, so that makes 4.

  16. What about Bell County!?! Seriously Bell could be very good by the end of the year! I really like the team's potential.

I would say right now Highlands is probably the best team. I think LexCath is overrated and doesnt have a good enough defense to get out of their 3A region.

If you even start to mention Bell, then you must mention Johnson Central also. The Varsity has had two defensive shutouts that were later spoiled by the JV. Not to mention they are one of the few teams still standing undefeated. They don't have the toughest schedule in the state, but definately dont have the weakest, playing South Point OH and Bryan Station

  17. Any night is a good night for football IMO. JC has a few key players missing in Ousley, Ratliff, and Richardson, but definately has the depth to make up for it. Mason Meek was really impressive last week, as was the entire defense in such a difficult time. We should see that same intensity, and maybe some more this Friday night.
