  1. Scott Co. beat South Charleston by 14 I believe. South Charleston didn't have two of their starter's. One of the missing was their point guard!

Actually my understanding was the score was something like 125-85(Scott Co) for five quarters-I know some people who are close to the Scott Co. program so I will try find out exactly what it was.Irregardless Elliott at worst is the third best team in the region and has a real shot at winning the 16th.When does Elliott play their district game?

  2. I dont think so, and if they did how many of them averaged over 10 points and 5 rebounds.

The Following 16th region Seniors started all or a high majority of their games as freshmen:VanHoose and Blair(Russell),Barker(Fairview),McDavid(Ashland),Blanton(Boyd).

VanHoose and Blair avg. over 10.Blair may have avg. 5rebounds.McDavid if not at 10/5 was close.

But I understand the point you are making. The stats these two have are outstanding and it is underscored even more by the fact they are freshmen.

  3. I don't believe that the Tomcats will play such lackluster offense to allow the Eagles to score 98 points in the 64th District Tourney. Great game, but doesn't sound like a whole lot opf defense was put up by either team.

I agree-I doubt if Fairview will score 98 on Ashland either. But you need to remember that this was the equivalent of a 40 minute game,in essence an extra quarter.Fairview and Elliott had 80 at the end of regulation.Exactly one week earlier Ashland gave up 83 to Elliott in regulation.Elliott is just an offensive team.A nightmare to match up with.Weaknesses, yes they have a few but who doesn't?They can score from every position and rebound from every position.

Why, especially in our region are people so much more impressed with a 49-45 game than they are a 102-98 game.

After giving up 69 to Rowan earlier this year Coach Biggs of Ashland stated that the final margin was what was important.I agree.Too many people want to criticize the style of play of Elliott but IMO they would not be nearly as effective playing "Ball possession".

As far as low scores at the region you have a point. But the length of the court and the vastness of the arena are also factors.

  4. Sounds like an awesome game. It was just a couple of years ago that they played a triple overtime game between these two teams at Fairview, the Eagles won that one, can't remember the score but both teams were in the 90's in that one. This is one of the most hard fought rivalries in the area, I am surprised that this game was this close, nice to see Cameron Hall coming on, he is a very talented freshman who is flying under the radar so to speak.

Yes that was a very good game-One of the Faulkners' -(Evan I think) hit a 75 footer at the end of the third quarter.Cameron played very well and with CONFIDENCE!

  5. Does anyone know where I can get a breakdown of Rose Hill's game by game stats? FG-FA, Pts, Rbs.

It seems that Armchair, Uncle Jed, Fastbreak, or RickyP could inform me on where to go to find this out.

Fastbreak would be your best bet. Also if you check on the khsaa scoreboard they have many teams and their stats listed.I believe you could get all the above called for stats from that source.

  6. This post only goes to prove you don't know what you are talking about. I'm not saying they are the best athletes in the region, I'm saying they are the best basketball players. They have a combination of size and skill that others just don't have. And they also play defense. I guess all I have are statistics that have allready been classified as mistakes by Armchair Coach, and the fact that people who know ability are courting the two boys.

Your assessment of the rest of Rose Hill's team proves you shouldn't be in this discussion.

What statistics did I classify as a mistake?I merely stated an opinion and pointed something out that RH supporters themselves have stated on many occasions.I respect the defensive ability of Arthur and admire the strides he has made as a basketball player but I don't think he is the best defensive player in the region.

FBall is right-some things are difficult to prove and therefore are very subjective.

  7. Game was 2 ots not three.Biggest lead for either team was 9(Fairview 18-10 and Elliott 59-50).Maynard hit big threesto tie the game at the end of regulation and at the end of the first ot.

    Some Unofficial Stats

    Elliott Co-5/27 on threes.

Ferguson-35 points including 8 in the first OT.

Ethan Faulkner-24 points good floor game.

Maynard-17 points including 3 threes and 6-6 from the line.

    Evan Faulkner-12 points/solid game.

    Fairview-53% from the field.

Hall-30 points (career high) including 5 threes.

    Barker-23 points/11 assists 7-7 from the line.

    Collins-18 points-good mid-range game.

Armstong-16 points/a factor in the middle.

Fairview played zone most of the game while Elliott started off in a diamond and one on Barker. After Hall scored 10 in the first Elliott played straight man for the most part.

Very entertaining game and that was not the "same" Fairview team that played East on Friday.

  8. The ADI shows that Euton is at the top of the regional field goal percentage list at 79% (158-200). Next player is Pettit of Rowan at 61.5%. I have a hard time believing that Euton is shooting this well. Can anyone verify if this stat is accurate or not.

Last week Euton was 150-283.I would imagine that RH did not submit the stats correctly and he is probably 158-300.

  9. Duck, you're not going to get me to paint myself into a corner here.

The only way I could win this argument would be to rank the kids you mention based upon what I see as their strengths and weaknesses. The problem is, I know every one of the kids you list, their parents and their coaches. Heck, five out of the nine you just named played at Rose Hill at one point or another…

I honestly love every one of them and wish them the best. I don't even care if they have the best game of their careers when they play my guys... just as long as my guys have at least one more point on the board when the clock runs out. :D

There's no way I'm going to get drawn into putting one down just to try to bump another one up. It's not worth it.

I was joking around with Sportsfan of Ky, but he makes outstanding points in posts 37 and 40 of this thread. I agree with him.

I can understand how Tim Fraley can make the comments he made about Euton and Jackson. He sees them do things on a daily basis that are far above and beyond the overall level of play in the 16th Region. Euton is a rare combination of size and touch. Is he the fastest player in the region? No, but he is certainly the fastest 6’ 8” player in the Region with solid skills in every area of the game... and he’s still growing… Jackson simply does things no other player in Region can do, and makes it look effortless. Hopefully you’ll get to see this over the next three seasons. Does that make them the best? Who can say? Does it really matter anyway?

Every member of BGP could vote one kid the hands-down best in the region, and it’s not worth one point in a district or regional ballgame. It certainly isn’t going to earn them a ride to a decent college. It's up to each one of these kids to establish their place in the history books, and for now, they’re still writing the pages.

I’m having a great time watching them, and genuinely wish each one of them the very best. :thumb:

Great points. They have to among the top freshmen ever to play in the region.Having said that they both have weaknesses that I'm sure you are aware. The thing is as Euton made clear in the outstanding newspaper article on the two he is willing to put in the time to improve as I'm sure Jackson is.The scary thing about Jackson is that he is doing so much with limited half court skills-He has limited range and does not go to the basket with authority and yet he has shot a great deal of free throws. This is an attribute to his athleticism.Euton works his tail off-His foot speed while not great has improved a great deal over the past few years.

Bottom line they are fun to watch unless of course you are the opposition.

  10. Even if we were to ASSUME that he meant the best duo playing for the same team within the 16th:

    1. Vanhoose-Blair

    2. Vanhoose-Gill

    3. Ferguson-#1 Faulkner

    4. McDavid-Thomas

    5. Vanhoose-Robinson

    6. Ferguson-#2 Faulkner

    7. Etc, Etc:sleep: :D

Even coming fom a partisan like you this is overkill. Are you sure you don't want to include Vanhoose-Turner,Vanhoose-Harvey,Vanhoose-Frasure, etc. Those two(Euton/Jackson) are probably the best duo and are definitely the most VALUABLE duo-Where would RH be without them? The other duos mentioned still have at least one-two very good players on their teams.

  11. Vanhoose yes, Ferguson, Ethan Faulkner, McDavid, Thomas maybe, they rest you mention, no. Size is the difference, it does matter. Do you really think that there are 8 better players in the region than Euton and Jackson? I think sportfan makes a good point. All coaches are biased.

I agree I don't think they are the two best players in the region but I believe an argument could be made by RH partisans to support that premise. All the players that have been mentioned previously-Vanhoose,Ferguson,the Faulkners,Barker,McDavid,Thomas,Daniel etc. are very important to their respective teams and it would be interesting to really dissect each team and see which 16th region player is the most valuable player to their team. What team could least afford to lose that individual.Perhaps some of the disagreement with annointing Euton/Jackson as the two best players in the region is related to the fact that they play at RH which turns some people off. This combined with a great deal of hyping by RH supporters(remember the preseason talk of the defensive prowess of Arthur-I believe there were references to him as being one of the best if not the best defender in the region) may affect the view/respect some have of the duo.

  12. I watched the game as a neutral fan and felt the officials called a good game.I realize that there will always be complaints about officials but can anyone honestly state that officials have been the major reason for a loss this season.

As far as the game is concerned I felt the supporting cast for RH played very well-they know their roles and don't attempt to do things they aren't capable of doing.

  13. Werent Rose Hill and Ashland supposed to play at Ashland in 03 but the game was moved to Boyd so more fans could come ?

RH defeated Ashland in Dec. of 2001 at Ashland. The next game between the two was scheduled for Jan 5 2002 at Rose Hill. The game was moved to BCHS to handle the crowd. These were both regular season games and were won by RH(the Jan 5th game being the one made famous by the OJ shot).Ashland defeated RH in the finals of the district and region that year. The next year the two teams met in the post season only, with Ashland winning the district and RH winning the region.

  14. No need to start a new thread with this (although it might have been an interesting one), but I thought some RH fans might be curious. Below are a few notes from the Official 2006 NCAA® Basketball Statisticians Manual that may or may not be entirely understood by all…especially regarding rewarding steals and rebounds to the one tipping the ball with control to a teammate… or that there is no limit to the number of dribbles taken by a scorer that resulted in awarding an assist…or that the assist may not have been the result of the last pass on the play.

FIELD GOALS – Philosophy. A player should not be charged for a shot from the field

influenced by the illegal actions of himself or herself, or any teammates or

opponents unless the shot results in an FGM.

SHOOTING ACCURACY—A player should not be charged for a shot

from the field or from the free-throw line influenced by the illegal actions

of himself or herself, teammates, or opponents, unless the shot results

in a field goal or free throw made. Shooting percentages should reflect

as closely as possible the accuracy of the player and his or her team.

Shooting percentages should not reflect shots that failed under the

    influence of illegal actions.

REBOUNDS - Philosophy. A player should be credited with a rebound only if the player

earned that rebound before the ball was dead. What happened after the

ball became dead and what would have happened if the ball had not

become dead might be different. The statistician should not attempt to

decide what would have happened but should decide only what did happen.

However, if there is doubt about player control, the statistician may

    assume that there was control.

Article 1. A rebound is credited to a player or a team each time an FGA

or FTA is not made. There are three kinds of rebounds:

    (a) An individual rebound (player rebound) is credited to a player who

recovers a live ball that has missed scoring a goal (field goal or free

throw). The recovery may be accomplished:

    (1) By gaining control of the ball.

    (2) By tipping or batting the ball in an attempt to score a goal.

    (3) By tipping or batting the ball to a teammate so that the teammate

or another teammate is the first to gain control.

    (4) By retrieving a rebound simultaneously with an opposing player

and having his or her own team be the first to be entitled to the

    ball.

ASSISTS - Philosophy. An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens

to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find

the open player or to help a player work free. There should not be a limit on

the number of dribbles by the receiver. It is not even necessary that the

assist be given on the last pass. There is no restraint on the distance or type

of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether

    an assist should be credited.

A player is credited with an assist when the player makes, in the judgment

of the statistician, the principal pass contributing directly to a field goal

(or an awarded score of two or three points). Only one assist is to be credited

on any field goal and only when the pass was a major part of the play.

STEALS - Philosophy. To earn a steal, the defensive player should be the initiator

of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. The steal should

be a take-away, not just a recovery and not just a forced error.

A steal is credited to a player when the player’s positive, aggressive

action(s), which includes contact with the ball, causes a turnover by an

opponent. This may be accomplished by:

    (a) Taking the ball away from an opponent in control of the ball.

    (b) Getting a hand on the ball in control of an opponent and causing a

held ball to be called, and having his or her team be awarded the ball

    for a throw-in.

© Batting a ball in control of an opponent to a teammate.

    (d) Batting a ball in control of an opponent away from and off the opponent

    and out of bounds.

    (e) Intercepting an opponent’s pass.

    (f) Deflecting an opponent’s pass to a teammate.

    (g) Deflecting an opponent’s pass away from and off an opponent and

    out of bounds.

Great job-I'm sure that this has enlightened many in the area. However I have never witnessed an assist given to anyone other than the last to pass the ball to the scorer.
