  1. Had a protective boot and crutches by doctor today...missed practice again today - but no fractures - severe sprain - plus he has turf toe issue as well...goes back to doctor Thursday - but he's a senior and tuff kid - so i doubt he would miss the game unless doctor prevents it...know more Thursday.

this is not a good thing but Collins will be decent backup - just young (SOPH) - but he is getting reps in practice and is doing fine - just not a Dominique - but who is?

If it makes you feel any better, Mayfield players X. Shelton had tweaked his hamstring and J. Jackson did something to his ankle. It isn't quite as serious sounding as what has happened to Hayden, and I doubt they would miss this game for the world.

  2. How big and good was Crittenden County's line? If they averaged 250 or so up front AND have athleticism to go with it, then they would have a chance against Beechwood. But you absolutely have to be that big and good to have a chance against Beechwood.

That was Beechwood's challenge all year. They were undersized up front and the guys played with great heart. I give all the credit in the world to the Beechwood guys up front who played undersized, out of position and hurt all year but fought through it to get this team to the state semis. Tremendous effort by the Beechwood men on the line in the face of great odds and adversity. But size takes over at some point if the guys with size have the athleticism and execution to go with that size. Mayfield's line has it all - size plus athleticism and execution.

It was NOT Mayfield's speed that won this game for them. And I am not taking one thing away from their speed because they have it in bunches. They have excellent speed all around but this game was won by Mayfield at the line of scrimmage. Trade the lines on these two teams and Beechwood wins. Look what Mayfield did on their first two drives of the second half. They lined up and just played smash mouth and Beechwood just did not have the size up front to stop it. Mayfield virtually stopped passing the ball in the second half because Beechwood just could not stop them up front.

Shelton, Murrell and Guhy are all as advertised. I put Shelton right there with the best players I have seen in recent years - Quan Weaver, Austin Collinsworth, Xavier Shelton. I don't know how big Shelton is but if he doesn't get a D1 scholarship, he should walk on to a D1 because he can play on that level. Murrell reminded me a lot of Ricky Buckler but with maybe little more speed. Guhy did a very good job running the team and making good decisions.

But just to help prove the point that it wasn't Mayfield's speed, look at Guhy's completion percent - barely 50% at 13 of 25. And that was with all the time in the world to throw because Beechwood put very little pressure on him. Beechwood's speed guys covered Mayfield's speed guys very well. There was one downfield pass completed all night that I recall and one other intended for Shelton that was defended perfectly and intercepted by Vocke. Almost all of Mayfield's completions and passing yardage were on quick outs that Beechwood's defense is designed to give you. But then Shelton picked up the the yards after catch with his elusiveness and ability to break tackles. Shelton is an amazing player.

Good analysis of the game voice, Mayfield had lots of ways to score, it was just too much for Beechwood, credit to the offensive coaching, they called the plays they needed based on the defense they saw. Good to see some others respecting Shelton, he is truly an athlete and will be missed but I think that Jevarius Richardson will replace his position next year and he is tougher in my opinion, maybe not quite as fast. William Higgison played the game of his life last night, he has really come into his own in the playoffs. I thought that from watching the videos of Beechwood-Bellvue that Mayfield would have the outside all night but Beechwood was shutting that down so they do have speed no doubt about it, thats where I credit the coaching. I know they poured over video for hours leading up to this game and it paid off. Crittenden has a big line, maybe as big as Mayfield's if not bigger, so that's why a lot of Mayfield fans think they could give Beechwood a game.

  3. I heard Beechwood just had a horrible practice. All they could talk about was eating turkey and playing call to duty. They haven't even looked at the scouting reports and just aren't ready for this game. :D

Lol, good one. Seriously though, do you think Beechwood will be able to practice tomorrow? It's a yearly tradition for Mayfield (On the years we make it to the semis) to practice on Thanksgiving morning.

  4. I agree that Trousdale was a great win for Mayfield. I also think some respect, credit or what ever buzz word you want to use should be given for the fact that they were the Defending Tennessee 2A champs last year. On the flip side, maybe not necessary you but some posters don't want to give Beechwood credit for being 2 time defending state champs. I personal do think that being defending state champions gives a team confidence and a little swagger as well as putting a little fear into the competition.

Oh yes, I am pretty nervous about Beechwood coming down to Mayfield no doubt. If Mayfield can pull out the win we can say that we beat last years defending state champs, which is a great thing to say. I fully respect the program that Beechwood has, you got to with as many wins that they have and the program they have built up. I only say its possible for Mayfield to win by 2 or 3 TD's because of the quick-scoring ability of Mayfield but I know that Beechwood can score very quickly as well but I think that Mayfield can score in a couple more ways than Beechwood is all. I think that ultimately this game is going to come down to who plays mistake-free ball.

On another note, I spoke with somebody today who is watching Mayfield practice and he said they looked ready and determined, so we will see how this story plays out on Friday night, hope everybody has a safe trip down and happy Thanksgiving!!

  5. Last time I checked Beechwood is still the defending 1A state champs for Kentucky. A class 1A team hasn't beat them for a long time. So if we are going to give a Tennessee team credit for winning last year. The same respect has to be given to Beechwood.

I agree, but the Trousdale win was the biggest win for Mayfield this year by far, it was a very high scoring affair between the two teams. I think there was a total of over 900 yards for both teams by the end of the game!! It was basically Trousdale's rushing attack vs. Mayfield's passing attack, it was one of the best high school football games I have ever seen. Mayfield was down 21 points in the first half and rallied in the second quarter and then on into the second half to finally take the lead and pull it out in the end.

I don't really know who to compare Trousdale to on Beechwood's schedule, they aren't as good as Highlands I wouldn't imagine but are probably better than Newport Central Cath. I know they have only lost one game this season and that was to Mayfield, they are getting ready to play McKenzie, TN for the TN state semis in 2A. So Mayfield has 2 teams still playing in tournaments, Trousdale and Paducah Tilghman and Beechwood has Highlands still playing in the tournament.

  6. Crunch-time take everything he says with a grain of salt! He likes to give his opinion. But don't give yours or he will go off on you. He'll come back at me now with something crazy. This will be a heck of a game. Both of these teams are very well coached. And will have the teams ready to play. If Beecwood stays home and comes down a few hours before the game friday. Some will say you should have came down thursday. And if you stay all night the day before the same people will find something wrong with that to. To be in the game at the end of the 3rd qtr with Highlands says great things for BW. And to have someone say that that was about as bad as HHS could play could be because of the team they were playing. Good teams can make good teams look bad sometimes. Even Mayfield has had some big ups and downs the last three or four weeks. Losing one game at the end of the year. Some will come back and say it was because of the rain. But both teams had to play in it. Now I will say Mayfield is I'm sure a better team. But not that night. Maybe they just didn't match up well. Who knows. Turnovers is a big part of the game. And Mayfield has turned it over to much lately. They let CC stay in the game because of it. Mayfield is a great team I hear if they don't turn it over. But so are alot of other teams. So to say because of a few games vs the likes of HHS you get beat. You are a 21 point underdog. Highlands very well could be the best team in the state. Nomatter what class. The same can be said about Mayfield. Getting beat by Christ. Co and letting CC scare them. Mayfield has some really good guys on here. And they will tell you constructive things. And they won't argue with you. Ony discuss, which is good.

Good post, anything can happen in High School football, Fort Campbell came into Murray last Friday night thinking they would go away winning and it came down to the wire, tied with 25 secs to go. They were the better team and they found a way to win, but not before they were playing the game of their lives!!

  7. I remember when Mayfield played Danville in 00 and they stayed overnight, the players in 02 told the coaches that they would rather take the bus up on game day early and get some hotel rooms and relax for a few hours before the game instead of being gone from home and all the distractions that come with it.

Yep, I don't think coach Morris does it anymore, we've been burned too many times.

As for the 2 or 3 point TD win for Mayfield, it's possible. Mayfield put up over 40 points against Tennessee powerhouse Trousdale county. The question will be if Mayfield can hold onto the ball or not.

  8. This years Mayfield team has honestly spread the ball around to everybody. One of the most balanced Mayfield teams I have ever seen. We have been our own worst enemy with turnovers last Friday night. But Shelton is the real deal, Critt put their best athlete Gray on him and he looked like he was standing still. If Mayfield can play mistake free ball, they can win this game. I have said all season that Mayfield can score anywhere on the field in less than 10 seconds, it's happened in about every game we have played in.

  9. ... and the Thanksgiving tradition continues this year. Cards 35, Rockets 0

Honestly though, with CC likely to pull out all the stops... onside kick... halfback pass... flea flicker, an unexpected touchdown or 2 could go CC's way. JV, William, Ty, X don't give up on those pass plays. They'll be looking to score first and try to build any momentum they can, don't be shocked to see some of this unorthodox play calling early in the game.

I was at the Bills/Titans game this past weekend and I will tell ya, Shelton should have been in there in place of T.O., that dude lined up offsides, AN NFL PLAYER!!

  10. Game was over very early as Mayfield lead 43-0 at the end of the 1st, and they were up 64-0 at the half.

Caverna had no business being in the playoffs...no disrespect intended.

I agree, 6 classes is just not working, ridiculous drive to get flattened by 70 points. Anybody with a red jersey on tonight scored. Our second string QB was putting on the points in the 2nd quarter.

  11. Yep, I agree with everybody else, congrats to caldwell, seems like they are a curse to Mayfield. They never dropped the ball, amazing on a night like this where the field was underwater. They were able to capitalize on our fumbles and put the score in. Hats off to the Mayfield defense, you guys played great tonight, we just couldn't get our quick-strike offense going in these conditions.

  12. That Dixie game was a nightmare. The worst Beechwood has played in a game in a long, long time. With all the new starters, they were just lost on the field that day. And sometimes things just snowball in a game and the score gets out of hand. Beechwood is a much better team today than they were that day.

I don't think anyone will disagree that Beechwood is a much different team than the past few years with the lack of size in the line. More speed, less size. That has created some real problems when facing the big lines the 5A schools have. I am hearing that Bellevue has a big line (6'2", 250 avg. was posted elsewhere) so we will see on Friday if today's Beechwood defense can handle a team with some big boys up front.

I kinda figured it had something to do with it being the first game of the year, the same can be said about this years Mayfield team. We played a very seasoned Trousdale team that had 16 consecutive wins coming into that game with us and had had at least 4 or 5 scrimmages coming into our game (they are way more flexible in TN in football) and our fairly young team was able to play way beyond our expectations against a very senior-laden championship team. I think the week 9 Mayfield team is even better than that team, we have had a few kids step up and have added a couple so it sounds like it could be a great matchup.

  13. Mayfields played noone near as good as Highlands, but, you're right, Trousdale is likely better or as good as Dixie or CCath and Graves Co is likely right there with them, as well. Calloway is likely pretty even with Holy Cross, too. I'm not too sure the district teams that each have played aren't equally as weak also. Hard for me to say better when it comes to the Fulton teams, but, geez, BBrossart, WVerona, Ludlow and Dayton sure aren't world beaters. By the way Mayfield averaged 51 pts while giving up 4 on average vs there district teams, so, not alot of difference in what the Beechies have done...

I agree that Mayfield hasn't played anybody as good as Highlands.. I am not surprised at Beechwoods schedule but the points they got beat by, for example in the Dixie Heights game, they were only able to put up 7 points at home?

  14. If you look at the strength of schedules Beechwood vs Mayfield. It don't compare. Mayfield is a very very good team. I'm not knocking them. Please get that straight. But Look at the teams records you have played vs Beechwood. The Fulton schools. Neither could beat any Northern team. Thats two. #3. Ballard Memorial has won two games and lost six games by an avg of 28 ppg. #4. Calloway Co 3 wins They lose by an avg of 27.2 ppg. #5 Paducah T. 3 wins 6 loses. So to compare is crazy. That being said. I think Mayfield it an awesome team. And they will prove it friday night. As will Beechwood.

Don't forget Mayfield beat Trousdale county, last years TN 2A state champion and has only one loss this season to guess who?

  15. I don't think that Mayfield has to dig deep to get up for this game. Pretty much the whole team remembers both losses last year and I am sure don't want to repeat that again this year. I look for Mayfield to get on top early with big plays to try to get Crittenden out of the grind-it-out offense and go to something like a passing game or something else they are not accustomed to. Mayfield has improved their run defense some but I don't know how much, Crittenden has a very good blocking line and I think Mayfield will try to use speed to break some of that up. JD is an athlete for sure and we have to be able to stop him, should be a great one to watch.

  16. I would say that Holy Cross has a shot at beating Tilghman and no it wouldn't be an upset this year. It really all depends on which Tilghman team shows up. I know when I watched them play Mayfield they had speed in every position it seemed, offense and defense but they can't seem to put it together week in and week out. They beat Calloway pretty convincingly and then turn around and lose to Union County and McLean County so I would say that Holy Cross is there with MClean county so the turnout could be similar, but that's a big drive for Holy Cross and that could play a factor in this game, but I don't think too much.
