  1. We are talking about legit 8th graders also, not ones that have been held back for mulitple years, just for sports. Wow what a life!

Acutally, we are talking about all freshman. It is hard to find a stand out freshman that has not been held back at least one year. My eighth grade year was the first year it was big in Harlan. Unfortunately for me, my mother would not let me hold back. I don't like the rule all that well, mainly because it sends the wrong message to kids. Most kids believe his dream of going to the NFL will definitely come true, but as we all know, the odds are against him. I think parents should instill the value of education into their children's heads instead of the "All-American" football player fable.

  2. Maybe I'm misreading what a couple of you are talking about, but moutainmojo68 is talking about kids in eighth grade right now, making an impact on their team when they are a freshman. That is not unusual in high school football. I was no All-American, but I started on both sides of the ball when I was a freshman. I know of many people who have done the same. Out of the four teams in my county, two of the starting quarterbacks were freshman. I'm sure freshman make an impact on a numerous amount of teams each year.

As far as Cawood goes, there are a few players who could make an impact as a freshman.

    T.J. Green

    Chase Niday

    Larry Williamson

These three players could make an impact for Cawood next year. Green could have started in Cawood's backfield as an eighth grader in my opinion.

  3. First of all, I agree with him that a lof of kids that deserve to be on the team get left off. However, most of the small town people that this man is talking about probably comes from the mountains, which occupies most of the small towns. So, yes, there are kids left off of the all state team each year that deserve it, but sometimes the majority of those kids are from the mountains due to the lack of their exposure.

  4. Speed, strength, throwing, receiving, running, tackling.........

In all seriousness, I would enjoy watching the Cawood offense open up a little more. I'd like to see a few formations thrown in; keep it simple. I would love for them to improve on all of the things mentioned above, though. The biggest thing the team needs (this goes for every team) is discipline. A discipline player with little skill can beat a skillfully gifted player with no discipline. Just my opinion.

  5. The finalists for the COY award are in this mornings CJ.

    Mike Settles-Bullitt East

    Mark Brown-John Hardin

    Paul Rains-Lexington Christian

    Bob Schneider-NCC

    Joey Downs-Bardstown

Out of this group, Rains would probably get my vote. I don't know much about LCA, but I know they haven't been a school for too long. Good job this season.

  6. I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't expecting Bell Co. (especially after the horrific start) to be in the position they are right now. Bell is peaking at the right moment, and could become dangerous if they pass the test against Rockcastle this Friday. My nod goes to Dudley Hilton.

Rock beat Bell; I take my vote back. If Phillip Haywood wins his third straight, he should be a lock. If you have not noticed, I am a little biased toward Mountain Coaches. Hey, the Mountain Players don't get the recognition they deserve, might as well try to get the coaches a little.

  7. I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't expecting Bell Co. (especially after the horrific start) to be in the position they are right now. Bell is peaking at the right moment, and could become dangerous if they pass the test against Rockcastle this Friday. My nod goes to Dudley Hilton.

  8. Makes sense to me. There would be no one there at 11:20 if Sheldon Clark wins. I'd say WYMT already had this S.O. penciled in for Belfry/Leslie.

Not to boast, but I posted earlier in the month that I thought it would end up being Belfry vs. Sheldon Clark if possible. Lucky guess I suppose.

  9. I want to clear something up. If a young man had an outstanding career in high school, and did not live up to the hype surrounding him at the next level it does not mean the young man did not succeed. Success is most frequently inaccuartely measured. For instance, if Arliss Beach graduates with a degree and has a great career outside of football, he has been successful. To be successful does not mean to be an All-American on the football field. Being successful is getting the best life has to offer, and being happy. If one is happy with his/her situation then he/she has succeeded in life. I have the upmost respect for those young adults who have went to the next level of football. Whether those young men were stand out players, or they contributed on special teams does not matter. His achievments in the class room, and in the real world makes him a successful young man.

  10. People keep posting about players that ran a 4.6 forty in high school. That is wonderful, and they probably did well, however, look at the players who make an impact at the D-1A level. Those players are running sub 4.6 in the forty, and have the size to compliment the speed. A good example of a running back with 4.6 speed is Jerome Bettis. People like that only come around once in a while.

  11. With the way Shaun Alexander is playing for the Seahawks, he has to be the most successful running back to ever come from Kentucky. Bush may be decent in the NFL, but there is no way he will be the player that Alexander is.

As far as EKY goes, there have been many great running backs. Two of the best I have seen are the Belfry backs - David Jones and Doug Howard. Both of these players play defense in college. Howard went to Pikeville College, so he wouldn't be counted anyway.

Size is not the big factor to the lack of success that former EKY running backs have had. The most important factor is speed. Barry Sanders was a mere 5'8-5'9, but he was so very fast. LaDainian Tomlinson is 5'10, his speed compares to Sanders. The bottom line is, slow, white hillbillies just aren't made for great success at the next level, unless they are lineman, of course. Occasionally, a QB from EKY will find success, too.

  12. The best player in KY has to be Micah Johson. He is ranked number one at inside linebacker by ESPN, and is ranked among the nation's best players in many recruiting agencies. However, this does not secure the Mr. Football victory for Johnson. Mr. Football usually goes to the biggest standout senior in KY, with a lot of regard to statistics. This may not be how it is voted on officially, but this is how it seems to me. Right now I'd say Justin Burke has a shot at Mr. Football. He has the stats, and has signed with a big named school.

My vote would go to Johnson, with Burke as runner-up.
