  1. Boyle went through 3 coaches and won 11 total games my four years in high school. Chuck got hired in the spring of my senior year. I vividly remember him walking the halls trying to recruit underclassmen to come out for the football team. At that time Boyle had about 600 kids and this is not hyperbole, the band had 180 members... all the cool kids played in the band.

The 1st game of his 1st season the Rebels shocked the central KY football world and beat mighty Harrodsburg with Julius Yeast (Ohio St), Craig Yeast (UK/Bengals), & Dennis (UK/Cardinals) & Derrick Johnson(UK.) They went on to have a winning season, make the playoffs and the foundation was laid.

They played in the same class and district as crosstown rival Danville, and it took about ½ a decade to clear that Admiral hurdle (19 straight losses to the hated Ads.)

By 1999 all the pieces were in place, the nightmare years and stigma of losing football was gone. The band no longer had 180 members and it was not only cool to play football, but kids came through elementary school and middle school dreaming of playing football for the Rebels. They went 15-0 in '99 and brought home the 1st ever state title and the machine that is Boyle football was in place ... you know the rest of the story.

  2. If my memory is correct Steve was in the booth as the Danville radio play by play man for 5 state titles, and he's been in the booth for 7 for Boyle. I think "His" record in state title games is 12-1.

He also called every one of Danville's 42 straight wins during their streak, and was there for Boyle during their 48 game streak & 25 game streak. He's an absolute pro and the Danville/Boyle community has been fortunate to have had someone of his caliber to listen to on Friday nights for he better part of 40 years. While he's obviously partisan at times, as he should be, he doesn't go over the line to the level of "homer", and he keeps it real during his broadcasts. Glad the rest of the state could hear what we get to hear on a weekly basis.

  3. I

Can't get my foot out of my mouth long enough to eat it. That is/ will be the best team Collins will see all year. 21-0 before Collins takes a snap and stat of game is Collins only running 25 plays.

Let this post be a shining example of how to respond when your pre game banter didn't turn out how you had hoped.

Excellent post, and kudos for having the class (and marbles) to step up and post it.

  4. KY high school to NFL head coach? C'mom man! How about No One. One step at a time, only a few can be a head coach in a college level, let alone a head job at an NFL team.

    Mike Holmgren

    Bill Walsh

    Vince Lombardi

    Paul Brown

The latter 3 of those 4 are absolute icons in the history of coaching. How many NFL championships are represented by those 4 men?

All 4 were High School head football coaches at one point in their career.

Good thing they didn't listen to those that said "come on man! You could never make it in the NFL"

  5. What if you're name wasn't The Guru and you started this thread?

You'd be laughed at and berated slightly before your banishment. Smh

Chuck couldn't make it at UK and probably wouldn't have been there if not for one or two special players at Boyle, along with Joker's jokeresque decision making.

1.) He certainly was not hired by Joker Phillips, he was hired by Rich Brooks & spent a lot more years with Brooks than with Phillips.

2.) As many or more of his big time HS players went to UofL (3) and other schools (Wake Forrest & TCU of the top of my head) than to UK. The only players he had from his high school days while he was at UK were Jacob Tamme and Taylor Begley (Neal Brown was already gone when Smith arrived at UK). Tamme was good but he was no Tim Couch or Dennis Johnson coming out of high school, not the athlete that was coveted so badly that his coach got a job just to help get him on campus. Chuck got his job at UK because he was 86-4 with 5 state titles and a state runner up as a head coach in the 6 years leading up to his hire at UK.

3.) He was the most impactful position coach and recruiter on a staff that in his time there saw the most successful 5 year stretch of any UK staff since Bear Bryant left in the 1950's (you can look that up, it's 100% accurate). His tenure was bookended by 2 bad seasons, and his departure was due to his 2nd head coach being replaced (because that coach was a bad hire from the beginning) and the new guy wanting to bring his own people.

4.) Last year's super Bowl featured 3 players directly coached by him in either in college or High School. Fully 1/3 of the former UK players who actually played (not practice squad etc) in the NFL last season can be directly tied to him as thier primary coach from UK or Boyle County.

I'm not claiming the guy should be an NFL head coach right now, but i know that literally none of your assertions ring true.

The crazy thing is they were there at the same time as the Johnson Brothers. For one of the 10 smallest football playing schools in the state to have 4 Div 1 defensive linemen starting for them at the same time is crazy. The fact that Beechwood beat them in the finals that year says tons about how good Beechwood was.

  7.

What is in bold is, quite frankly, unnecessary.

I have all the respect in the world for Coach Smith and Boyle Co. I simply asked a question about playing tougher teams.

I don't know if you have ever coached football but when you cruise to every victory easily in the regular season, it does nothing to help prepare your team for the playoffs. Most coaches would rather have competitive games to help their teams. That's all I'm saying.

Good luck to Boyle the rest of the way.

A contrary point to what you're saying is this. The fact that in the past, and seemingly will be the case this year, Boyle's younger players are continually getting significant playing time throughout regular seasons against pretty decent competition. By the time these freshman and sophomores become seniors they will have seen the field much more than similar players at other schools. The type of results Boyle had seen so far can end up paying significant dividends in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. That, coupled with 4-5 weeks of extra practice every year the team makes a run at December and by the time these kids graduate they realistically could have an entire "extra season" that has led to their development. IMO that's what keeps the snowball rolling once it gets started at places like Boyle, Highlands, Mayfield etc.

  8. To be honest with I'm not so sure Boyle County realized they were going to be that much better than everyone they played with the exception of Central Hardin. I predicted some close games but they put a running clock on three straight ranked opponents. Scary thing is Boyle County continues to get better.

I do get your point but Chuck Smith knows what he's doing. He made a schedule he thought was most appropriate. It just happens that this team really clicks.

    This!

When this schedule was made, the first 5 games included a defending state champion from 4A, a semifinalist from 5A, a quarterfinalist from 6A, and two games against perennial top 10 teams from their respective class. Every game so far has been against a ranked team that was undefeated at the time of the game. This is a very appropriate schedule for a 3A team trying to win a 3A state championship.

This is not a case of soft scheduling, it appears Boyle just may be ahead of schedule in what will hopefully be a return to the type of consistency we saw during Smiths last tenure.

Remember, in the 6 years prior to his departure, Smith led Boyle teams went 86-4 with winning steaks of 47 & 25 games included in there. They won 5 consecutive state titles and finished as runner up in the other season. As far as player development goes, those teams produced multiple Div 1 and NFL players.

This staff had proven it once had the right formula for meeting the above criteria of making itself and its players better every week.

  9. The difference between 11-13 year olds to 17-18 year olds is WAY different than the difference between 17-18 year olds to 21-22 year olds. I do agree with you that it would be a mismatch. No need to call me a child.

Never called you a child, never insinuated you were a child. However you comments throughout this thread seem to indicate you are indeed younger than a lot of the other respondents. My assumption was you were a high school student, That doesn't mean I called you a child.

No offense was ever intended, My apologies

  10. Like a lot of folks, I assumed this was just a joke question, but throughout the pages of responses I've concluded that the OP is obviously a young guy who was seriously asking.

CCHDynasty, here is an analogy that may truly bring it home for you. Ask yourself this question, let's say a middle school team was really good one year, better than they've ever been. What do you think the outcome would be if that middle school team played a game against CCH varsity? That's the same age game we are talking about with a high school team vs a college team.

Now, to make it more apples to apples, think about the other argument. Bishop Gorman has had 20 D1 players total over the past 4 years ... Very impressive, but a lot of those D1 players went low D1, to D1 schools that even UK at its low points routinely beats by 30 pts. UK has 85 power 5 level D1 players every year. So a better analogy to your question would be could a really good middle school team beat the varsity squad from Trinity, Moeller, Cincy St. X.

If you answer that question honestly you'll have your own answer to your original question.

  11. Boyle seems a little lethargic. It feels a heckuva lot like Thursdays game against Led Catch to me. The rebs can't find a groove, down by 6-10 the entire first half. Also similar to Thursday, Bell has had a big half to keep it from being worse than it is.

Now... Hopefully similar to Thursday, the Rebs will find a spark in the final 16 minutes, I just hope they don't wait as long tonight.

  12. 47 free throw attempts?

Ballard started fouling on nearly every possession when they were down 21 early in the 4th. I don't know the exact number, but I wouldn't be surprised if It was 20-25 4th qtr FTs as Ballard was trying to extend the game as long as possible

*edit - I just looked at the update thread, I don't know if pp92 reported every single play of the 4th, but he reported 24 FT attempts in the 4th qtr alone by Boyle. Like I said, Ballard was down big and went into fouling mode much earlier than we usually see in a game. If the pressure didn't force a turnover A foul came pretty quickly thereafter.

  13. Elkins early foul trouble handcuffed him the whole game, Tyler just never seemed to find his groove and Boyle still advanced. Mr. Jeremiah Bell came to play today.

I was in a section close to a small group of Boyle fans who very obviously did not care for Bell at all, one guy in particular was just ripping on him every single time he touched the ball. But Bell was a beast today. In the first half he kept Boyle within shouting distance and kept the game from getting out of hand. He ran the point for all 32 minutes for a team that only committed 2 turnovers the entire game. His penetration was the ONLY offense Boyle could seem to muster for the first 27 minutes of the game.

With about 2 minutes left, the fans next to us were still blasting the kid every time he touched the ball, my uncle who had driven in from Indiana, and who hadn't seen a Boyle game in years turned to me and said, "all that kid has done is put them in a position to win this game, for my money if it comes down to 1 possession for the win, I'm giving him the ball, telling him to take it to the rack, and I'll take my chances"

2 minutes later, as we watched my uncle become a prophet, the guys next to us finally ran out of negativity to shout at the kid.
