  1. Congrats to the boat of Dade Vincent and Brock Vincent on winning the KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship over the weekend at Kentucky Lake.

They won with a two day weight of 34lbs, 11oz.

The Vincent/Vincent boat continued the legacy of excellence for Muhlenberg County.  MCHS has won 5 of the 10 state championships.

Second place was the McCracken County boat of Camden Baker and Harley Valerius with 26lbs, 14oz.

Third place was the Montgomery County boat of Joe Rothwell and Luke Maiden with 24lbs, 11oz.

Fourth place was the Madison Southern boat of Clifton Scully and Riley Causey with 23lbs, 12oz.

An inaugural all-female champion was also crowned.  Congrats to the Montgomery County boat of Maggie Miracle and Kenleigh French with a 2-day today of 27lbs, 11oz.

Fun fact about NHS baseball. The Wildcats won the 1st two KHSAA sanctioned state tournaments. 1940 n 1941.

My grandfather was a starting picture on those teams.  He celebrated 100 years in December and can still tell you about the state championship game.

  3. Duece, if you get the opportunity to coach, I would suggest that you find the most struggling team you can to bring your coaching talents to. It's not until you're on the receiving end of blowouts with a team that just doesn't have the Jim's and Joe's that you truly find out how you would treat other teams if you were on the giving end. You find out how classy some coaches are when they find ways to keep the score down. And then, you run into coaches just as you described you would be.

I've been fortunate enough in my life to play for a very established program and to be part of a coaching staff at a school in their 2nd year of football. We didn't win a game and scored our first point in game 8. I learned more about coaching from my 3 years at the program than I did everywhere else. It was painful, no doubt, but well worth it.

Oh, and the programs that are struggling are always looking for good coaches.

I'm confident that your stance might soften after being on the receiving end.

  4. After a few delays, the wait didn't disappoint.

North Oldham came away with a 76-63 win over South Oldham.

It was a tale of 1 quarter and then 3 quarters.

South came out on fire from 3. Of their first 20 points, 6 were 3's. It was a clinic. They built up a 25-12 lead at one point in the second quarter, but with a combination of North playing better defense, South missing some open shots, and North hitting the glass, South went into the half up 32-29.

I don't have stats, but would like to see the breakdown of shooting percentages after the first quarter. The third quarter felt like a struggle for South from the field. And with the make-up of their team, if they aren't hitting from the field, they are going to struggle. (but when they're on, they are fun to watch)

The third ended with North up, 51-42. (a 39-17 run from North's biggest deficit)

The district ended in a 3-way tie. So it will come down to LIT ratings to determine district seeding.

  5. I saw that the news of the Highlands vs Notre Dame game reached all the way to Washington State it doesn't surprise me that others are now trying it. The college game had to change rules to protect the games integrity so it may be time for high school to do the same.

And please don't get me wrong, coaches doing this are well within the rules of the game and are trying to win at all cost so I am not knocking anyone who does this to win. It just hurts the overall game, in my opinion.

The reason why the college game made the change wasn't because of the rare times that the underdog would stall, I really believe it was because of North Carolina's 4-corner offense. The offense they would run when they were winning. They would start playing for the last shot of the half a the 4-minute mark. I can only remember a few games when an "entire game" stall was employed. Most underdogs can't stall if the better team plays an active man-to-man defense. I will go on record and say that 99% of the girls high school teams in the state couldn't execute a stall technique if the better team played man-to-man defense. It's very rare for a team to have 5 ball handlers and players that can pass effective enough against an active m-to-m defense.

Regardless of if I'm an HHS grad or not, I don't think we need to make any changes to girls high school basketball. The rules are fine the way they are.

  6. So now you agree you were wrong in your account, so why didn't HHS come out and pressure NDA? I mean a loss by 1 or a loss by 70 is still a loss no matter what!

I was wrong, they were down by six going into the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie with 2 minutes remaining. No one is debating that the better team won and a HHS lost. The debate here is what was the best strategy for HHS to use to have a chance to win the game. If they try and run with ND it's a blowout so why is it so hard to understand that what HHS did and the strategy they used gave them the best opportunity to win the game. I still contend that ND's coach played right into it.

  7. Nor did HHS at the start of the 2nd half.... that is applied zero pressure!

What I understand from the game is that HHS scored their first 2 points of the game within a minute of the start of the second half and played a 2-3 zone back on D and ND had no answer for the zone and after a minute and a half of running their offense ND called timeout and came out and held the ball to force HHS out of the zone. Down 4 to a team you lost by 28 points why would you want to come out of a defense that had ND uncomfortable? If I had said HHS had a shot to take the lead with 3 minutes remaining or a semi contested 4 footer to tie the game with two minutesn remaining I would have been told to take the blue tinted glasses off. Every prediction had ND winning BIG. The coach who I talked to who was watching the game told me that he felt if ND would have just continued to play pressure D on HHS in the first quarter ND would have forced HHS to change their gameplan.

  8. The bottom line on stall ball is this. Sports is about competition and trying your best at all times to prove you and your team are better and more skilled than your opponent. In stall ball, one team is choosing not to compete. Call it strategy if you want but if you have your team standing still with the ball doing nothing, there is no competitive action taking place. That is why it bothers people. Stall ball is not competing.

And if the other team "walks" within a 6 feet of the player "standing still with the ball doing nothing", it's a 5 second call and a turnover.

Tell me again who wasn't competing?

I wasn't at the game, but based on what I'm reading, this wasn't the 4 corner offense that Dean Smith ran where all 5 players were handling the ball and moving. Notre Dame applied ZERO pressure. (again..only an opinion based on other posters comments)

  9. Would like to hear your reply if Bellevue had done this. And don't tell me that would have been fine with you and you would have forced the action, etc, That would have denied your team of a chance to score 100 points which they were certainly trying to do.

If the HC at Bellevue felt slowing the game down would have given their team the best chance to win, I sure would have hoped they would have employed it. Obviously, they didn't. If they had, Coach Richey would have had to make the decision as to how to attack that.

If I know Coach Richey, I don't think she sits back if she feels she has the talent to beat you. She attacks and tries to force the action.

  10. 3 possession, maybe 4, and the game is a "normal" game and all the NDA fans are happy. That's all it would have probably taken for NDA to put the heat on and jump out to a 6-12 point lead. With HHS being young, I don't think they would have been able to consistently handle the pressure. Think about it...3 minutes is all it would have taken. But the NDA coach didn't want to do it.

I can see a couple of reasons why the NDA coach doesn't do it. First, she was caught off guard and never thought about what do to in this situation. Second, if she's confident she will win the game, her team advances to round 2 with 1) no injuries and 2) no fatigue.

As a player, I'm counting on my coach to put me in the best situation to win the game. I'm counting on my coach to leave their emotions out of her coaching decisions. Thinking strategically in order to put me in the best position to win the game. If you ask any player if they think they can "take" a player from the other team, 9 out of 10 say yes (I like the confidence) when the coach might know that in reality, that's not the case.

Someone mentioned earlier that upsets happen, and that's why you play the game. Though I agree, I would challenge that poster, as I think in girls bb, it happens way less than in other sports. The talent level is usually much greater. Maybe not so much in players 1 thru 3, but in players 4 - 8.

Good season Birds and congrats to the Pandas on the W. Good luck the rest of the tourney.

  11. Therein lies the problem HHS is having scheduling. In "up" years, you can take care of yourself and be competitive (and even win). But in "down" years, history says you can't count on HHS to show any "mercy" on you. (I still remember watching HHS come out of halftime against L-Ville Fern Creek in 2000, up by multiple touchdowns, and kicking an onside kick. I was embarassed)

Is it the responsibility of HHS to show "mercy"? Absolutely not. I like to refer to it as a form of sportsmanship.
