  1. The team IMO is already picked before they tryout....I think they do the tryout to see if there are any kids they may have missed......usually caters to ballhogs and showboats....

Exactly! And that's why sometimes good players don't look as well in these situations. Most are used to playing as a team, with chemistry. These games are overblown. They cost money to the players and for those who have already committed to a team, they are unnessacary and not much fun because of just what you said........ ballhogs and showboats.

Sometimes it's better to work on your own game at home, lift weights and get ready for college ball.

  2. Anybody want to explain a preferred walk on in basketball?

Don't sugar coat it. A walk on is a walk on in basketball.

It simply means that he does not have to try out. A preferred walk on is recruited by the school. A regular walk on is (in some schools) goes through a tryout process like the Knight School but less time.

Most larger schools don't even use the term "preferred" any longer because its assumed that the coach will choose whom he wants anyway.

  3. Just some observations about criterion for the Mr. Basketball award......

You took that term Mr. Basketball, and emphasized the MR. to say that it was ONLY an individual award.

However you ignored the BASKETBALL part which would lead one to believe that although the award goes to an individual, it should not be ignored how well his team performed and how well he performed on that team!

My emphasis was only that MR. is singular which means that it's based on an individual's talent.

The best basketball player in the state may very well be a player who plays on a terrible team, gets no press or hype, and therefore doesnt even get mentioned for the award.

It is a given therefore that Mr. Basketball will go to a player who plays on a top team and plays well on that top team.

Agreed. but since that is true, shouldn't the title only come from those who make it to the sweet sixteen?

Also, it seems obvious to me that since the award is only given to seniors that it isnt based on who had the best single season (this includes best senior season), but who had the best career over 4 years.

If it was the case that the award went to the player who had the best single season that year, then the award should technically go to any year player, and not just seniors.

    Very good point.

Another observation is that although stats are important, they arent the primary criterion for Mr. Basketball.

If stats were the single criterion then Stuart Miller deserves mentioning, and should probably win the award.

That's my point, we don't know what exactly the voters look at.

Also, although college potential is important, it isnt the primary criterion for Mr. Basketball. If it was then the #1 college recruit out of the state would win the award every year.

I agree, but once again you are giving your opinion. We don't know.

Athletic ability also isnt the primary criterion..... or the player who could jump the highest or run the fastest would win the award each year.

    good guess, but just that.

For me the key is that the award is a HIGH SCHOOL award....... and therefore should be given to the player who has had the best high school career.

Now what determines "the best high school career" can vary...... but its obviously a combination of all the above mentioned things.

Also..... I think its important to note that Mr. Basketball doesnt neccessarily have to go to the best basketball player. Just the player who played the best in high school

Do you see my point............. It would be nice if we saw, in print, the criteria used to choose Mr. Basketball.

  4. We have had this debate before.

Mr. Basketball has nothing to do with college potential or athleticism. It has nothing to do with stats. It has to do with being the best High Schoolbasketball player in the state. All 3 of those things may or may not be a reflection of whether you are the best HS player in the state.

I think all 3 of those things (athletic ability, college potential, stats) are important to being a great basketball player; but you can have all 3 of those and not be the best High School basketball player. On the other hand, you can have little of all 3 of those, and still be a great High School basketball player.

Slaughter is great, and a deserving candidate. He is obviously the superior athlete when compared to Allen, has more college potential then Allen, and may have better stats (not sure).

Allen however IMO is the better HS basketball player.

#1 reason why.......... he has played extremely well on the biggest stage against the best competition, as well as won the biggest game on the biggest stage in KY HS basketball. He was "the" key contributor in that run. #2 reason why........ he has had an unbelievable career and his leadership and basketball ability are a huge reason why South Laurel has made its climb into the upper echelon of KY HS basketball.

#3 reason why.......... he is the MVP of one of the states best teams. No one has meant more to their team then Allen has meant to SL. Sure some ppl will argue that Allen doesnt mean that much to SL. However, if you take Allen off of SL's team last season they dont win a championship. You take Allen off of SL's team this season they probably dont even make it to the big dance.

The problem is, that there are no stedfast and consistent criteria for Mr. Basketball. Nobody knows how they are picked. Stats? Won/Loss record?

How far team advanced? How far the team went the year before? College potential? Who knows?

By the term itself, MR. Basketball, seems to leave TEAM out of the equation. I would like to know how many Mr. Basketballs of the past averaged scoring less than 20 points per game.

It seems that Mr. Basketball, by name, is an individual honor, not based on team performance but individual performance. I wouldn't think that it would be based on college potential because it deals with one particular and previous year. But again, since there are no standards, we can only leave it up to a group of individuals with individual and different ideas as to what it takes to be Mr. Basketball.

  5. I see a lot of kids/teams that can’t seem to get enough of the long ball, and they have no business launching them. It's like baseball players that swing for the fence while nursing a .175 batting average.

On the other hand, the three is a very effective weapon in the hands of a player/team that knows how to use it.

A player/team that can consistently hit 33% from 3 range is the same as a player/team that averages 50% in the paint. Not too bad.

A player/team that can consistently hit 40% from 3 range is the same as a player/team that averages 60% in the paint. Pretty good.

A player/team that can consistently hit better than 40% from 3 range needs to let it fly.

A player/team that cannot consistently hit better than 30% from 3 range needs to save it for the buzzer.

I'm so glad that somebody finally put in print these facts about the 3. I've also known this but never posted it for some reason. I get so tired of hearing the easy cliches' like " live by the 3, die by the 3". The fact is if a player shot 50-60 percent from inside the arc, we wouldn't be saying "live by the 2, die by the 2." Most people tend only to repeat what they have heard from someone else without thinking these things all the way through. This quote by fastbreak ought to be pinned permanently to the top of the basketball forum EVERY YEAR.

Thanks Fastbreak, I can finally die in peace!

  6. Could play for a Georgetown type team. You might see one or two LeMaster type outings against Ole Miss from him, but thats about as far as it goes. UK will not offer hims a scholly, it will be a walk on opportunity.

There you go again......... a bias Bell diss If he can walk on at Ky, he can play for plenty of other D1 schools as bad as you may have to admit it.

Why can't you give him an honest break? thousands of players would love to have the opportunity to walk on at UK. Why don't they? 1. they are not ask. 2. They are not good enough.

  7. It doesn't hurt to have a high school coach to help push the hype either. The Middlesboro coach has done just about everything he can to help this kid get a better offer than LMU.

    That's probably below the belt

How many former players on this site wished that their coach would have been more aggressive about getting them a scholarship?

I think Miller ability is worth a coach giving it his all.

  8. He would do well in NAIA. He could play and be a solid contributor in DII and DIII. But in no way, shape or form do I think he could cut the mustard at the DI level without a major retooling of his game.

He may play NAIA or D2, but he will have the opportunity to play D1. Heck, If Pitino is giving him a look at L'ville, it would be absurd to think that a mid level D1 would not be offering. His game would have to improve just as ANY PLAYER that comes out of high school at any level.

Here's the question, if he shoots as good as he does now, wouldn't it be logical to assume he will get better?

  9. I have said over and over that Miller is an incredibily gifted shooter, as good as there is. I have also said that he is a great athlete who can handle the ball very well. However, I agree with Les in that he doesnt play much defense. I dont think that its a lack of desire or ability, just a lack of coaching IMO. I think it also has to do with the fact that Miller feels like a lone ranger on that team, and doesnt feel like he is surrounded with good talent. That is what happens when you play for a basketball program like M'boro.

Les watches a lot of basketball, and sports in general. What he says is very credible. Doubt he has any personal vendetta against Miller.

Could be true but find me an example where he has given him any props. I'll feel better.

  10. If Miller gives Louisville 10 to 15 points a game, it will all be for naught because his horrid defensive play will allow whoever he gards to score 15 to 20 game. Just doesn't even out. Sorry.

At least the Bell guys give Miller some props. I don't ever remember you saying anything good about Miller. It looks like you just don't like him period. This doesn't help me give what you say much credence.

  11. 1. Log Mountain, you evidently haven't played with Miller for a couple of years. 5'10"?

    2. Unofficial visits are limited by NCAA. They must be used sparingly and can only be used certain times of the year. Players who live close by sometimes are ask to come. A place like L'ville can get kids to do that.

    3. Ukbell, Miller may not get to sign, but he gets a visit. At l'ville that's special.

    4. Miller on defense...... he's athletic enough to learn. Defensive players have to learn to shoot. What's the difference? You need both.

    5. Why don't some reporter simply call his parents and ask about schools and visits and get the real scoop instead of guessing about who is calling and who is not?

  12. bell14, Once again, good honest post. I would say the only difference would be that he does have d1AA interest. I honestly don't understand the difference in official and unofficial except for NCAA rules. The difference would be that he would have to pay his own expenses to come. But once you arrive on campus, they still provide a pass to the game and will talk sometime in the process. He would still have to receive a verbal invitation that was instigated by the school in either case. I would also agree that we all need to just let this play out, understanding that no matter what happens, he got an opportunity that most kids only dream about.

  13. What's that supposed to mean???

Nothing really. It's a legitmate question. It just seems that we're all putting too much thought into it all. They just called and ask him to come and visit. I'm sure that they would not bring him up just to say "your no good, go home". They may ask him to walk on which, to me, is unbelievable that they would even do that. But even if they don't ask him to walk on, just to be called to take a visit from Rick is special.

  14. I will address each of your 4 concerns seperatley, but first, let me say....... chill out and dont get so darn offensive.

On a side note: Maybe someone should inform CardinalSports.com, the leading media outlet for recruiting news at UofL, of Pitinos interest in Miller. Miller is nowhere to be found on there recruiting boards or databases. Not saying that Rivals is the be all and end all of recruiting, but if he isnt on that site then I doubt he is on Pitinos radar. Rivals very rarely misses a kid if he is legit.

Good stuff, but, by the above comment, are you saying that you think this information about them contacting him is false? I'm just having a hard time understanding what you mean.

  15. Very well stated bell. I would say this however. This is not much ado about nothing. If it is what the other thread stated, then he was contacted by phone, by an official basketball person to come and make a visit. This is not a generic contact. And it does happen a lot at the end of someone's senior season. (ala Loften). True, nothing may come of it, but I can't think of another kid in the 13th region in the last several years who has even gotten this far with Louisville..... I think it's just the fact that shooters with his range and ability are rare and the Loften fiasco has caused coaches to take a step back and realize that some players may be unable to play defense but can shoot while some can play defense but can't shoot. Given this scenario, coaches always choose the defender, but if you do that in every case, you never have a bonifide shooter.

One last thing. I think that Miller would serve himself better to go to an OVC school were he would have more of an opportunity to excel unless he wants to go into coaching. If that's the case, BEG for any opportunity to be on Ricky's bench.

  16. Has LMU made an offer to Miller, how about Union College or Cumberland. If the locals are not offering how will the big boys offer. 5'10 maybe 5'11 at best, is Miller better the Vance or the Mills kid that played a couple of years ago.

He has plenty of NAIA people on him and D2 offers. I also read where he is being looked at by OVC teams and SOCON teams. The L'ville visit will probably make others take a hard look.
