If Jimmy Pike returns this game could really be close but I haven't heard his status this week.

I said it in an earlier post. Somerset will be 0-4 in predistrict and end up the regular season at 6-4. The first one comes this week 35-14.
I see them winning the district also and in an easy fashion.

Cumberland's weak schedule makes it harder to figure this one out. If I recall correctly, Cumberland has won 4 out of the last 5 meetings. With the Skins at home and returning several starters from last year I will go with Cumberland in a close game.

A few days ago I thought this would be a war, but not so sure right now. Evarts played with Clay County last week until Jimmy Pike went down with a knee injury after a nice run for a 1st down inside the Clay 20 yd line. He
did not return to the game. This happened with about 7 min left in the 1st half with Clay leading 14-6. Evarts did gain a 1st down but was negated by a procedure call and failed to convert on 4th down. The rest of the 1st half and the game belonged to Clay County. Clay scored on a long and controversial play at the end of the 1st half to take a 35-6 lead but this play had no bearing on the outcome of the game. Starting midle linebacker Adam Helton did not play due to a shoulder injury. I don't know what their status is for Friday's Alumni Bowl, but if neither play this game could be ugly. The defensive line will have to play better, the Clay QB had all day to wait for his receivers to break open and Derek Cochran was under a lot of pressure all night.

The Bulldogs look to have the better athletes. The new offense of Harlan will need a lot of improvement for week two to stay close in this one.

Dustin Mefford a senior running back on the 2005 Evarts football team was tragically killed in an ATV accident this evening near the community of Black Mountain outside of Evarts. Dustin was the leading rusher for Evarts last year and had graduated this past May. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the Mefford family.

Speed at the skill positions shoul be be the difference in this one. I still expect a close game though.

Lynn Camp should have a huge night on offense with their ground game. The Paintsville offense will have limited possessions in this game.
