What does "pull their own weight" mean?

That's the statement which prompted the last paragraph in my reply above...

To CoachJ and others I am going to ask what I feel like is a stupid question but here goes, does the State of KY own/operate the EKY coal mining operations or are they private businesses? If they are private businesses then coal from EKY and local energy costs have should have nothing to do with the amount of tax money that is paid any school system. One is a for profit business and the other is a state imposed tax.

 

And I know I am in the minority here but I think cities/counties should have the type of services (police, fire, public service, schools, etc.) that they (and they only) are willing to pay for.

"severance tax" - A tax imposed by a state on the extraction of natural resources, such as oil, coal, or gas, that will be used in other states.

In the coal region, these funds are vital to make up the difference in funding from lack of manufacturing jobs (as found in the golden triangle area). Mining does not provide a sufficient income-based tax base because mining today is largely automated. So it's nothing more than a mechanism which provides the state with money directly and makes up the difference in funds to provide services.

Also, the coal producing region of the state is far less densely populated, but over a larger, more geographically isolated area. This dictates schools of smaller size and increased transportation costs. It is simply more expensive to educate x number of students here than in the more urban areas, ie... it's much less expensive to run ONE school of 1000 students than FOUR schools of 250 pupils.

The ironic part of the "why does EKY get more funding than MY county" is...if the coal-producing counties got ALL the Coal Severence funds while the Triangle counties kept all their income-based funds, the discrepencies in per pupil spending would be even MORE tilted toward the coal-producing counties. Lexington/Louisville/Cincy isn't nearly a big enough hub of manufacturing to approach the money provided by coal (and also natural gas in the near future).

The past two seasons it has been in Week 0 and, suffice to say, Haywood was very happy to have a crack at Pburg with a couple games under his belt.

 

Belfry is putting up monster rushing yards so far, they went for over 475 tonight, 352 against Harrison County, and 429 against Henry Clay. Pirates Soph HB Justin Johnson left the game early with an ankle injury as he was on his way to a monster night.

 

Belfry is showing that in 3A they were not just a flash in the pan who "lucked" into a State Runner-Up. The Pirates are going to be a very, very tough team come November and appear to be the clear cut front runner in the East.

No doubt about it, Belfry has a killer ground game. Prestonsburg demonstrated Belfry's loosely-played 2 deep zone won't cut it against a proficient passing game, however.

Hopefully, Prestonsburg's young defensive front learned it can NOT play tentatively against a power option game like the Pirates bring. The interior linemen can't simply stand and wait to lock up with a blocker - the tackles MUST attack the blocking to free the LB's to make plays.

Actually, the previous two years the teams met in week 0.

You're probably remembering when they were both in the same 2A district a few years ago (and played later - usually twice)...

The defenses of neither team showed tonight.

Only one defensive stop apiece in the 1st half...Belfry 21 P-burg 18 (Blackcats without a kicker due to injury). The Blackcats scored on intial drive to start 2nd half to go up 3, but after that couldn't keep up.

The injury bug bit P-burg hard this game. The Blackcats lost Anderson and Garner - perhaps their 2 best players not named Jamerson (who's already out due to injury). Garner's injury looked like a shoulder dislocation...Anderson's is some unknown groin, pelvis, or hip injury, though I've heard it may be serious.

Both offenses demonstrated (in gory detail) where the other defense needs work. Exposure of weaknesses at this point of the season will help both teams down the road.

This is a good time of year for these two to play - enough games that everyone knows what he's doing, but soon enough that deficiencies each brings out in the other will help them both be better later.

These are two teams that have come to know the other very well. Watusi is right - it's always a game both teams want to win.

As has become the usual, Prestonsburg will try to win with aggressive speed while the Pirates counter with precise power. I'll add more later...

- Every team mentioned for #10 has issues of some kind, Bardstown included. No matter which team was put there, a good argument could be made against. If 15 teams fit in a "Top 10", it would be easy.

- NewCath at the top did indeed have serious graduation losses, but the '10 Tourney earned them a benefit of the doubt at the top this season.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how this ended up. There's been almost NO criticism of any spots other than #1 and #10.

Corbin seemed to have more defensive players on the field than Prestonsburg had offensive players. I never did understand how Corbin's outside backers were able to get into the backfield without being blocked time after time. :confused:

The answer is simple. When in the jet series, one wing is taken out of position by the motion. When that OLB blitzes, he has a free path into to the backfield.

In the spread, Crisp doesn't have the footspeed nor quickness that Burchett (last yr's QB) had. He simply doesn't have the ability to beat a tackler 1-on-1. Without keeping 2 backs in to block or not having a quick target, he was a lame duck.

The Corbin defensive coordinator's gameplan was excellent.

Corbin's defense dictated the game. Great job by the Hound's defensive coordinator in dissecting P-burg's offensive tendencies and weaknesses. I was afraid what would happen when a good defensive team blitzed the OLB's vs. P-burg's jet set and Corbin illustrated just that in gory detail.

The one chance P-burg had to get back into the game after the half was embarrassingly squandered. I hope it was the QB's mistake lining up in the gun with NO RBs on 1st and goal at the Corbin 1 (the snap over the QB's head after NO look-back by the center argues it was) - ended up with the QB not being able to fall on the loose ball. Crisp is NOT even an -average- "running" QB.

Completely off topic, but Prestonburg's football site is great. Whoever set that up did a wonderful job.

If Prestonsburg does sell out to the run and plays 1 on 1 on the corners, I like Corbins chances. Willard Farris has a lot of options in that situation, and he is a slick play caller. Can't imagine Prestonsburgs D coordinators playing that way for 4 quarters, but we will see.

Yeah, whether P-burg can cover Corbin's wideouts 1-on-1 is a game determiner. And the other is whether Corbin can control P-burg's running game with 6-7 man fronts.

I agree Pburgs DB's are tough to contend with 1-on-1 with Slone, Williams, & Jamerson. Not to mention the up & coming play of Anderson. I do think if they would use Collins more up the gut it would open up for the outside runs on the dreaded Jet Sweep i hate so much.

We saw some of that this past Friday. When Collins gets inside yards on the trap and counter, the LBs aren't so quick to take the first step wide.

Prestonsburg needs to force Corbin to respect it's running game, while Corbin must force P-burg to respect its passing game. The Blackcats must move the ball on the ground vs. "cover-2 + man-to-man" schemes. Otoh, the Hounds need to show the ability to throw downfield vs. P-burg's "loading the box + straight man-to-man" type defenses. If one team does a better job, they win.

IMO, it's that simple.

I'll say Prestonsburg... 35-28 (mostly because I LIKE P-burg's DBs 1-on-1 vs. most any receiving corp, NOT because I'm comfortable with P-burg's running game).

Prestonsburg with a nice balanced offensive attack tonight. And, something which made me smile...the dominant defensive line reappeared.

Roark for Middlesboro has a cannon for an arm (but sometimes throws it too hard).

I think Murrays line play and defense will be the difference. They don't score alot of points sometimes because they have a grind it out running game behind that big line and eat alot of clock in the process, which on one hand is good, but, it also tends to keep other teams around longer than they should, in some cases and then a big play or turnover and anything could happen...

Absolutely... it's the biggest flaw with that type of offense. Big plays and turnovers become HUGE.

With how "wide open" 2A is this year, this may be fun...

- Assign a % chance for each team in the list of ending up the 2A Champion. Your total added percentage should be 100 (if you give a shot to an unlisted team please add them to the list)

I suppose an argument could be made PCC had more to play for in this one, but I don't think I'll buy that.

Two things stood out in this one:

1. PCC's QB was a hoss of a runner. No one on P-burg's defense could handle him 1-on-1 (consistantly poor tackling technique by Blackcat defenders, to boot).

2. Prestonsburg's defensive front wore down late in the 4th quarter. The Hawks killed the final 3 mins. of the game.

P-burg was the better passing team, but PCC was much better on the ground. Additionally, Prestonsburg turned the ball over more.

I hope not submitting isn't an intentional thing on their part - getting players' names out does nothing but help showcase them to colleges. I suspect J.J. Jude would be among the state's rushing leaders.

Both team's defenses took the night off. :lol:

P-burg had over 250 yds. passing at the half, but didn't catch the final stats.

No doubt... Someone was obviously a tad overrated.

Answer honestly...Do you expect a good closely-played game between OCath and Ft. Campbell ??

- if you DO...you must either agree with Ft. Campbell's ranking -or- think OCath belongs toward the bottom or out of the rankings.

I also agree with some of the posters. FCampbell is a good football team but not sure they break the Top 10 yet. If they beat OCath this Friday then they are deserving. I just feel that teams like Green County, Washington County, Monroe County, and Caldwell County are being snubbed. Also, to have Glasgow no better than a #9 ranking to me is way off. That team is very athletic and when healthy, could be a contender. If they do not get healthy though, playoff run could be limited.

You've taken one team out of the "top 10" while claiming FIVE others are being shorted in some manner. I'm not intending to be a smart-aleck when I say this, but this is plainly unfair to your pollsters. Naming 14 teams to a top 10 is a luxury the BGP's poll doesn't have !!

The results are simply a batch of opinions on who will be who in the tourney based on increasing data points throughout the year.

Believe me, those opinions are often very different. The listed ranking is merely the sum result of opinions - it is NOT the list of one member.

Well... so much for a Prestonsburg/Russell district rivalry. We get Leslie Co. (again), instead.

District 8 - Betsy Layne, Leslie County, Prestonsburg, Shelby Valley... Why bother with a district at ALL ?!? Talk about a competitive imbalance !! I remember the "running the score up" accusations aimed at the Blackcats when the district consisted of these same teams not long ago...
