An interesting situation I forgot to mention was a husband Keith Young coaching the boys team for several years at Adair County and he was replaced by his wife Juanita who coached the Adair County boys for one season. There are numerous father/son coaching families but that is the only husband/wife coaching family I’m aware of.

It's girls' basketball, but high school legend Jaime Richey coaches at Highlands. Her husband, the multi-talented Bert Richey, coached at Grant County for a few years until 2009, I believe.

  2. St. Henry played and beat Bluegrass United last year and it counted toward the team's official win total, which added to coach Faust's official win total. So that's two bits of evidence now that seems to support a win over Bluegrass United as being a bona fide KHSAA-endorsed win. The kicker: A 14-10 St. Henry squad won by just two last year, 69-67, at Bluegrass United. Which begs the question: Where do home-school teams play home games? Presumably not in the living room.

  3. 2nd Region Week 8 Review

The region is solidifying its order as there are no changes to the rankings. The toughest decisions were deciding between Lyon County and University Heights at No. 1 and deciding between Webster County and Hopkins County Central at No. 7. Lyon County continues to get a lot of scoring from sources other than the hot-shooting Travis Perry. University Heights heads to the All "A" Classic state tournament riding a six-game winning streak. Those two teams remain tied at No. 1. Gerard Thomas continued to shine for Henderson County, averaging 20 ppg last week. Another hot team is Crittenden County, which has won three games in a row. Madisonville-North Hopkins has hit a rough patch, losing four straight and six of nine after an 11-1 start.

    Regional Rankings:

    1. Lyon County (16-5) The defending regional tournament champion won both games last week, beating Webster County, 89-79 and crushing Trigg County, 80-38. The Lyons have won five of their last six. They are 8-1 versus regional competition and 5-0 against the Fifth District. Travis Perry led the way against Webster County with 33 points, padding the second-highest point total in state history. Perry shot 3-for-7 from 3-point range, 10-for-15 from inside the arc and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He is averaging 30.4 ppg and shooting 50.7 percent from the field, 45 percent on 3s and 88.4 percent from the line. The kid can absolutely shoot the basketball from anywhere like few high school juniors can. Jack Reddick added 23 points against Webster. Brady Shoulders had a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds.

    1. University Heights (11-6): The 2021 regional champion went 2-0 at home, beating Hopkins County Central, 78-51, with 16 points from Trevonne Wallace,
and taking down Madisonville-North Hopkins, 62-41, extending its winning streak. The Blazers are 7-2 against the region and 0-1 vs. the Eighth District, the loss coming against Christian County. This week, University Heights will be making its 26th All "A" Classic state tournament appearance. The Blazers play 16th Region champ Raceland in a first-round contest Jan. 26 at Eastern Kentucky University. They will be well-tested. They have also beaten Lyon County, Henderson County and Murray. Their two regional losses have come by one at Madisonville-North Hopkins and by two at Christian County. Their four other losses came against McCracken County, Bowling Green, Owensboro and Ohio County.

    3. Henderson County (14-6): The Colonels went 2-1 for the week, losing to Castle (IN) and beating Daviess County, 74-43, and Evansville Central (IN), 80-59. Gerard Thomas had the high scoring game of the week with 26 points vs. Evansville Central. Henderson County beat Madisonville-North Hopkins by 21 on the road in December and are 4-1 in regional action, with the lone loss to University Heights. They have not played in-district yet. They have some nice wins outside the region. They beat 17-4 Calloway County by 21 and beat 17-4 Ohio County by 17.

    4. Madisonville-North Hopkins (14-7): Yikes, the Maroons nearly doubled their season loss total in a matter of days with a surprising 0-3 week. They lost 65-50 at home to Hopkinsville, lost 62-41 at University Heights and fell to LaRue County, 82-69, at the Nathan McCurry Classic at John Hardin. The Maroons have previous wins over University Heights, Christian County and Hopkins County Central. Coming into the week, a home loss to Henderson County was their only regional defeat, but they are now 8-3 in the region (3-0 in the Seventh District).

    5. Christian County (11-9): The Colonels went 1-1 for the week, losing to twice-beaten McCracken County, 58-52, and beating Hopkinsville for the second time this season, this one by 30. The Colonels have also beaten University Heights, but they have won more than two games in a row only once this season with a three-game winning streak in December. Their in-state losses have come against the likes of Lyon County, Madisonville-North Hopkins, Paducah Tilghman and Bowling Green. They are 4-3 versus the region and 3-0 in Sixth District play.

    6. Hopkinsville (7-12): The Tigers went 1-1 with a win over Madisonville-North Hopkins and a loss to Christian County for the second time this season. Beat Owensboro earlier in the season and also beat regional mate Webster County, but the Madisonville-North Hopkins win is probably the most impressive. The returning regional runner-up has losses of 11 points or fewer against Madisonville-North Hopkins, Ohio County, Henderson County and McCracken County. The Tigers have also lost to Murray, Warren Central, DeSales and Bowling Green twice, so it's not like they have shied away from top-notch competition. Twelve losses are a lot of losses, true. But man, look who've they've come against. And they haven't lost to a bad team. Beat Webster County by 10 in December.

    7. Webster County (9-9): The Trojans lost to Lyon County by 10 and defeated Union County and Caldwell County. They beat Crittenden County and Trigg County earlier in the season but not a lot of quality wins here.

    8. Hopkins County Central (9-9): The Storm had a 2-1 week with victories against Caldwell County and Trinity (Whitesville) and a loss to University Heights. They have wins against Trigg County and Union County, keeping the Storm above those squads, but they don't have a lot of big wins, although they did beat 14-6 McLean County on the road in December.

    9. Crittenden County (10-10): Lookout! The Rockets went 3-0 last week, beating Livingston Central, Christian Fellowship and Trigg County for the second time this season. Suddenly, they have a .500 winning percentage, with a previous win over Union, as well. They are 4-1 vs. the Fifth District.

    10. Trigg County (9-10): The Wildcats went 0-2 with losses to Crittenden County and Lyon County and fell below .500. Beat Union County by 16 earlier in the season.

    11. Union County (8-9): The Braves finished 1-1 for the week, with a second win of the season over Livingston Central and a loss to Webster County.

    12. Livingston Central (5-13): The Cardinals went 0-3 with losses to Carlisle County, Union County and Crittenden County, extending their losing streak to five. They have defeated Dawson Springs, Caldwell County and Fort Campbell.

    13. Dawson Springs (8-14): Went 2-1 with wins against Paducah Community Christian and Cloverport and a 51-37 home loss to Caldwell County. Beat Caldwell County by two in an earlier meeting and has beaten Fort Campbell three times.

    14. Caldwell County (4-13): The Tigers went 1-3, losing to Marshall County, Hopkins County Central and Webster County but managing a win against Dawson Springs. Beat Fort Campbell by one earlier in the season.

    15. Fort Campbell (4-12): The Falcons went 1-2 against out-of-state schools at the Superman Classic in Metropolis, Ill. They beat Century (IL), capping their stay, after losing to Charleston (MO) and Carterville (IL).

Saturday night's late final score from the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea:

Bath County 67, Estill County 59.

Player of the game: Montana Brasher. He had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

This score still has not posted at KHSAA. Info comes from the Bath County Basketball Twitter page.

    Bath County is now 10-6.

Check that. Bath County is now 11-5!

  5. Senior guard Zack Otis became Bath County's all-time leading scorer this week, breaking a 36-year-old record. Otis passed Bath County legend Chris Swartz, who ended his career in 1986. Otis had 2,184 points entering Saturday. His 27.1 scoring average would rank eighth in the state, but Bath County hasn't reported team stats since Jan. 13, so he is not on the KHSAA's updated season scoring list at this hour. Congratulations to Zack Otis!

  7. 16th Region Week 8 Review

There are no changes to the top five in the regional rankings. Ashland Blazer stays on top. Boyd County remains No. 2 on the heels of a 110-107 double-overtime win against Campbell County. Third-ranked Russell has won 12 consecutive games. Other hot teams: Greenup County has won five in a row, and Rowan County has won three straight. Russell remains tied at No. 3 with Fleming County. Rowan County, now sixth, and Bath County trade places after Rowan beat Bath by 13 this week. The top three is closer than you think, according to the KHSAA web site. At last check, the KHSAA RPI has the top five in the region looking this way: 1. Boyd County .62944, 2. Russell .62147, 3. Ashland Blazer .61196, 4. Morgan County .57283, 5. Fleming County .56790. Even so, there are not a lot of teams in the region that have had a lot of success against successful teams.

    Regional Rankings:

    1. Ashland Blazer (13-7): The Tomcats finished the week 1-1, losing at Huntington (WV), 58-55, snapping a five-game winning streak, and beating Danville Christian, 84-55. The four-time defending regional champs are 5-0 against regional teams, including a nine-point win at Boyd County and a 22-point win versus Fleming County. They are 2-0 versus 64th District opponents.

    2. Boyd County (13-4): The Lions went 2-0 for the week with an 83-55 victory at home versus 12-8 Lawrence County and the epic three-point win against 12-9 Campbell County at the Auto Owners/GCH Insurance Classic at Nicholas County. Cole Hicks scored 24 against Lawrence County and Jacob Spurlock added 21. The Lions also have previous wins against 11-5 Pikeville and 13-6 Eastern. They are 3-1 against the region and 1-1 vs. the 64th District.

    3. Fleming County (13-8): The Panthers went 2-1 with wins against Bath County and Raceland, giving them just four wins against Kentucky teams with winning records. Adam Hargett with 28 points and Seth Hickerson with 20 led the way against Bath County. The Panthers lost to 12-9 Bracken County by three. They are now 8-2 vs. the region and 3-1 vs. 61st District foes. They don't have a loss to a bad team. Other previous results: Two losses to Mason County, one of them by five, and losses to Owensboro Catholic, Butler, Highlands, Ashland Blazer and Bath County. They beat Russell by 21 at home earlier this season.

    3. Russell (17-3): A fifth straight unbeaten week for the Red Devils, who went 2-0 with victories against Menifee County and Raceland. Damon Charles scored 25 points against Menifee. They are 13-1 vs. the region, the loss to Fleming County. Three of those regional wins have come against West Carter. Beat Bath County by nine in December and has also beaten Raceland and East Carter but has not played as tough a schedule as Fleming County. They are 4-0 vs. 63rd District opponents.

    5. Morgan County (13-5): The Cougars stopped a three-game skid with a 100-68 win against Lee County. Gatlin Griffith led six scorers in double figures with 22 points. They lost to Magoffin County by four in overtime earlier in the week for a 1-1 showing. They beat Magoffin County by 26 in the third game of the season. They are 3-2 against the region including a 27-point win against Bath County, one of three wins against state teams with a winning record (also Magoffin County and Estill County).

    6. Rowan County (10-9): The streaky Vikings won three in a row last week. They waxed West Carter by 41. They defeated Bath County, 69-56, and beat Montgomery County by three for their second and third wins against state teams with winning records. Dashawn Watson (18 points), Jayson Ingles (18) and Colby Wilburn (17) scored 53 of the 69 points vs. Bath County. The Vikings won their first three games of the season, then lost five straight, and lost four in a row around the turn of the new year. Moved to 6-3 vs. the region. Beat Menifee County by 21 earlier in the season and beat East Carter by seven.

    7. Bath County (10-5): Finished the week 0-2 with losses to Fleming County and Rowan County. Beat Fleming County by one in overtime earlier in the season. The Wildcats also lost to Russell by nine earlier. They are 2-6 since the 8-1 start. They are now 6-5 against the region. They played Estill County Saturday night while looking for their fourth win of the season against winning Kentucky teams.

    8. East Carter (11-7): A 2-0 week for the Raiders, who downed Elliott County and Fairview, which marked just their third win against a Kentucky team with a winning record. Blake Hall had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds vs. Elliott County. They have won five of their last six and are 8-4 vs. the region, 3-0 against the 62nd District.

    9. Raceland (10-9): The Rams went 0-3. Ouch. They fell to Lewis County, Russell and Fleming County, dropping their record to 6-6 against the region. They have just three wins against state teams with winning records: Fairview twice and Johnson Central. They've played three games against district teams and lost all three. They did beat Menifee County.

    10. Menifee County (7-12): The Wildcats finished 0-2 with losses to Russell and Greenup County. Their only victory against a Kentucky team with a winning record is against Raceland. They are 4-6 against the region.

    11. Fairview (10-9): The Eagles went 2-1, beating Elliott County and Grace Christian (WV) but losing to East Carter. No wins against a KY team with a winning record but they are 8-4 since a 2-5 start. They have beaten West Carter.

    12. Greenup County (7-12): The suddenly streaky Musketeers have won four straight games after losing six straight thanks to a rare 3-0 week. They beat West Carter, Lewis County and Menifee County.

    13. West Carter (4-13): The Comets went 1-2, losing to Greenup County and Rowan County, and defeating Elliott County.

    14. Lewis County (4-14): The Lions stopped a five-game losing streak with a win over Raceland but lost to Greenup County in the next game. The only win against a state team with a winning record is against Raceland.

    15. Elliott County (2-17): The Lions finished 0-3 for the week, losing to Fairview, East Carter and West Carter. They have lost 11 games in a row. They lost six straight to begin the season. They have an 0-11 record against the region.

    16. Rose Hill Christian (4-13): The Royals went 0-2, losing to Covenant (WV home) and Jenkins. They are 0-7 vs. the region.

  8. Another hundy hundy game tonight, this one between Boyd and Campbell! Epic. That's at least three hundy hundy games this season in the state, two involving Walton-Verona, but I'm sure there have been more.

Consider this the beginning of a list of games in which both teams scored at least 100 points:

    Walton-Verona 102, Evangel Christian 100 (OT) Nov. 30

    Walton-Verona 107, Scott 104 (OT) Dec. 12

    Boyd County 110, Campbell County 107 (2OT) Jan. 21

Can any BGP sleuths add to this?

  10. This might be a near miss but I'm sure somebody here can clear it up:

"Gentleman" Jim Connor (Newport Central Catholic, Boone County: 431 wins). Also Thomas More College: 133 wins.

His son: Terry Connor (Thomas More College: 58 wins).

Did Terry Connor ever coach high school ball? I'm thinking he was not a head high school basketball coach, but what about as an assistant? Can't imagine him getting a college head-coaching job without first being a coach of any kind at the prep level, but it's possible. It goes without saying that Terry Connor has been a pretty good athletic director at TMC.

This only shows the strength currently in the 8th region....

True that. At least seven teams have at least one huge win, considering either opponent or circumstances or both.

Grant County beat Conner by 27

Collins beat Grant County by 25

North Oldham beat Mason County by 14 and Lyon County by 34!

Simon Kenton beat Ashland Blazer by 1 on the road at Ashland's own tournament

Owen beat Grant County by 16

Walton-Verona beat Evangel Christian by 2 in that epic 102-100 game early in the season.

Anderson beat Collins by 5 by shooting lights-out from everywhere and holding Collins to low percentages everywhere

Good bounce back win for they Braves!  Not shocked, Grant has potential to beat anyone on a given night.

Ho-hum, just another 27-point win for the Braves over an elite Ninth Region squad. I think the margin of victory is quite shocking, no matter how good Grant County is (which is pretty good!).

No, no. I stand corrected! I got your vibe right. I don't know why I got that backward. Totally missed it on the re-read. Thanks for the truly kind words.
