When East and West Carter consolidate in a couple years with an enrollment of over 1300 they will be the biggest school in the region. They are most definitely going to be a new power player in the 16th in all sports.

I agree. It all depends on if they can bring Olive Hill and Grayson together!  May be awesome and may be like “Oil and Water.”

I agree with Reno. This game will be closer than many think. Ashland has been there and done that…..like five straight times and this year makes six. Zander Carter is a D-1 commit and is surrounded by a good supporting cast. And as mentioned they have played a tough schedule. I think Lyon County will win but if it is in a romp I’ll be surprised. However, I understand that Lyon County has also played a difficult schedule and their 20 point win at Lexington Catholic keeps reminding me that when their whole squad is healthy they can be an awesome machine with Mr Basketball and Kentucky commit Travis Perry leading the way.

I agree with The Professor on everything except I’m taking the Tomcats by 3.  They are way underrated.

I do agree that Ashland is the one, at least for now, as we awkwardly debated (my fault) last week. In the end I think Boyd wins the region but at this point in time they are just a tick behind the Tomcats...but... as sure as the wind switches direction that tick can shift the other way. And as Reno said, Morgan County is definitely capable of beating Ashland or Boyd on any given night. The recent loss to Danville Christian keeps them, in my mind, out of the top two spots.

I won’t put Boyd in the same category as Ashland until Coach Anderson (or whoever is calling the shots on the bench now 😂)  plays a decent schedule.  These holiday classics they play in were to pad stats.  It does nothing for them to prepare for the post season. It came back to bite them vs. Pikeville and Pike Central.  The Tomcats have proven they prepare for the games that matter.  It is a proven fact.   Morgan is definitely playing pretty good but they can’t win unless Hoskins is able to hit shots.  We saw Ashland take that away last year in the regional tournament.  Morgan can beat Boyd because of lack of coaching.  Coach A has to regain control of his bench and team.  Remove the problem.  We don’t have to say what that is.  The entire state already knows.  Chemistry is at an all time low now.  JMO

Tomcats and Zander Carter complete a banner week for Ashland basketball…. Boyd regains its mojo…. Who's the region's premier sharpshooter?....

The last two weeks have been eventful on multiple fronts and ran the spectrum from Boyd County's lows at the Pikeville Invitational to Ashland's highs at its own tournament. Throw in Fleming County limping through an 0-3 week, and we have the Tomcats on top of the region for the first time this season.

The 68th annual AIT crowned the hosts for the third time in four years, with Ashland jumping on Danville Christian early in the final and never letting the Warriors make a game of it.

The greatest individual accomplishment of the week also occurred at the AIT, as Zander Carter became Ashland Blazer's all-time leading scorer, breaking a three decade old record held by Tomcat legend Marty Thomas. Just a junior, Carter could put the new number out of sight for future Tomcats.

Boyd County bounced back from a rough week in Pikeville with a pair of blowout wins in the Cumberland Falls Invitational. The Lions torched the nets for 36 made threes across two games at a clip of 54%.

Fleming County has been closing in on a promotion in the rankings, but found themselves stalled out after an 0-3 week where the Panthers were reportedly not at 100%. Fleming at full strength will have a say in how this region shakes out, but last week was a temporary setback.

The 16th Region may be home to more great shooters than any other in the state right now. The numbers support it.

Jacob Spurlock is the name most synonymous with perimeter shooting around these parts, but a few others are giving him a run for his money.

This quartet can hold their own against anyone. State rank in parentheses.

    Jacob Spurlock (Boyd County) - 51 made 3s (3rd) | 49.5% (7th)

    Preston Hoskins (Morgan County) - 55 made 3s (2nd) | 47% (10th)

    Tyson Lalonde (Ashland) - 41 made 3s  (8th) | 17 made 3s in the AIT alone

    Seth Hickerson (Fleming County) - 35 made 3s | 47.3% (8th)

Spurlock has done nothing to lose ground as the region's top shooter, but Hoskins has matched him shot for shot. Lalonde's stroke was a vital component of Ashland's AIT title run. If he can keep it up, the race for the region's premier perimeter shooter should be a fun subplot to follow through Morehead, where all four of the names above will feature prominently.

The Tomcats have bumped Boyd County from the top, at least for a week or two. We don't have to wait much longer to see how they match up, with the Lions visiting Ashland on January 9th.

Get To The Point (High Scorers For The Week)

Jacob Spurlock (Boyd County) - 35 against Lou. Western

Tyson Lalonde (Ashland) - 29 against Ohio County

Preston Hoskins (Morgan County) - 27 against Martin County

Taylan Sorrell (Bath County) - 27 against Mohican Young Star Academy (OH)

Montana Brashear (Bath County) - 26 against Bracken County

Colby Wilburn (Rowan County) - 26 against Presbyterian Christian (MS)

Zander Carter (Ashland) - 25 against Jeffersontown

Lake Adkins (Elliott County) - 24 against Bracken County

I like Morgan at the #2 spot.  They had 2 nice wins against Louisville Butler and Martin Co.  Boyd has literally played 5 straight teams with less than .500 records. (lost to 2 of them) Morgan is becoming more battle tested as the season goes on.  The strength of schedule will come into play for the lions later in the season.  Hey, it’s good on the stat sheet though!  😂
