  1. There was no McDonalds for girls when Walz played. Walz played in the equivalent girls National all star game at the time. 2002 was first girls game for McDonald’s so Maddie is the first NKY. She is the fifth ever from Kentucky.

Hard to compare Jaime and Maddie, different type of players from different eras of basketball. Have seen both play. I’m a big Maddie fan, I would think this solidified Maddie as one of the top two players ever from NKY?

Only three other Miss Basketballs correct? Walz, Moss and Donna Murphy. Am I missing anyone?

  2. I don't think that's much of an issue. Nobody seems to be diminishing their ability this year.

I don't think that's much of an issue. Nobody seems to be diminishing their ability this year.

I don’t think it’s that anyone is against SK on here, but it’s unfortunate that two big wins that showed how good SK is this year (Ryle and Dixie) were when the teams had good players out or playing half the game. It’s given everyone the “but so and so was out” caveat. They will win the Traditional Bank tourney in Lexington and that should firmly set them in the top 5 teams in Kentucky.

  3. Both teams had at least 10 players returning for both squads.

Not sure what your saying here? And why did you quote me?

SK returns and played basically all their main contributors from last year. The three seniors and Webb. Chelsea Little and Alexis Baker also returned and are contributing now. But after those 6 there is not much that returned to contribute. So “10 returners” means very little in girls basketball. Considering the loss of Schwartz, McGregor and Scherr for this game I’d say Ryle returned even less of their actual contributors. Maybe a Ryle fan can be specific?

  4. This whole statement is laughable.

Not sure what you mean. I definitely do not think Scherr is laughable when it comes to impacting a game. I do think she’s the best player in ky. Would she have made a 30pt difference? No player makes that big a difference in my opinion. That was my point. Would the game be closer, of course. But that goes to show how good SK is this year.

  5. Thanks for the feedback. But I think I've found someone who I definitely disagree with here.

First off, Keifer is a great player in a particular system. She's my top "pure post player" in NKY. But without shooters around her, she's not a major offensive force. Sure, she's a defensive nightmare. But to be a top five player, you can't be dependent on the talent level of the shooters and ball handlers around you.

Lawson could very well end up top 3-4 in NKY. I'll give you that. But recovering from an ACL is by no means a full guarantee. If she fully recovers and becomes the player we all project and expect her to be, I'll be as happy as the next person. But for the time being, she has a serious recovery ahead of her that the others on this list don't.

Abby West, again, can play. She's no scrub AT ALL. But until she performs high on a Regional level, I think it's fair to pump the breaks a bit.

Vickers... perhaps you've seen her more in person than I have. Would you rate her over Morgan Stamper from SK? I would suggest than most people would not.

Feldman very well might be the player I've seen the least this Summer. She might surprise me, and if she does, I'll concede. But for the time being, I'd definitely take Lockard or Macke over her.

Serenti Webb averaged 6ppg and 5rpg per game last year. I know she's high on several college's lists and I FULLY expect she'll round out into on of the best players in NKY. But forgive me if I don't have a 6 & 5 player in my top 10 just yet.

But again, I say with no sarcasm, I do appreciate the feedback. I'd just suggest that your 6-10 seem more on potential and upside, than proven accomplishments.

    Lots of info here.

Keifer. You can’t argue Keifer to a low ranking using an argument that works just as well on players like Holbrook or Lockard. Great guards that can shoot that mostly rely on bigger players to make them good. Keifer will unquestionably end up at a D1 school which the other girls will not. Macke and Holbrook probably won’t even play college ball. Keifers outside shooting is improving too.

In my opinion Abby West is just a better all-around player than Holbrook and Macke. They are all very similar and what they can do. But having watched all of them in the summer as well I would take Abby West first. You have to concede that they are at least close, if you’ve watched all three of them play much.

As far as Vickers, she is going to a top college D3 program. (Moving to NAIA I think?). And to use the same argument you used against Keifer I would argue that Vickers is a much better all-around player than Stamper. Stamper can bully you inside but after that there’s not much else.

In my opinion Feldman is better than Macke, Lockard and Holbrook. I think once you see her play you will agree pretty quickly. She had an outstanding summer playing for a very high level team.

Lastly I think Lawson is top 5/6 player in NKY. I did not take her ACL into account. I just ranked according to my opinion of best players.

The 10th spot is harder, I do agree that Allen is right there in the running for top 10. I’d have to say Allen, Webb or maybe Macke for my 10th spot.

  6. If SK has the best post player in NKY then we see something different. She is young and it shows. I would say Drummond’s at Conner is way more polished then her. Remember watching Conner play Male at TMU last year and Drummond put on a clinic in the post against whoever guarded her including Browning.

Also SK has the luxury of being in NKY but playing in the 8th. SK is 4th or 5th in the 9th but because they play in the 8th they have a shot at making it to state.

Your last point about coaching. I have seen multiple games where the staff literally just gives up. I have never seen this from a varsity coach. Literally things didn’t go well in the first quarter and not one word said or timeouts called the rest of game. I have seen multiple and had parents confirm it has happened also.

Coach Stowers is well known as GREAT coach. Anyone who follows girls basketball knows this. You and others may not like or appreciate his style or tactics, but he has established himself among the elite coaches in KY. Girls move to his school to play for him. Nell Fookes has her detractors because of her aggressive style. Stowers has his detractors cause of his reactive style. But you can’t argue with the legacy of either coach.

As to SK in NKY, it’s not like they don’t play the NKY teams? They’ve been ranked in the top 3 teams in NKY for what the past 10 years straight? That’s because they beat them all head to head with a few exceptions. This year’s team will beat every major team in the ninth again except maybe Ryle. Outside chance Dixie could beat them. At worst they are 3rd if they were in the ninth.

    NKY Centers

    Drummonds, NAIA school?

    Thomas, no offers yet?

Webb, will play mid major or better D1

    Missing anyone?

Maddie D is a fine player, but one good game doesn’t make her the best. If you count Keifer from Brossart as a center then she’s probably the best in NKY. But it’s likely she won’t be strong enough to be a 5 in college.

  7. I’m surprised no one has brought up Simon Kenton or Anderson County. SK returns three future college playing seniors. Plus the best center in NKY. Hard to imagine them not being the best team to come out of NKY this season. Anderson County finished with 27 wins last season and return key players. No offense to Ryle, but they lose too much. If any team from NKY has a chance to win state this season coming up it’s SK.

  8. Deserved win for the Pioneers. They are better than their record because they have played hard teams. This team is well coached and will make some noise at tournament time. This win shows that they belong in the conversation.

It also shows that the 8th region is better than advertised. Walton took SK into overtime and is in my opinion a sleeper team. Watch out for the Lady Bearcats.
