Newport's Cats Hope To Run Wild, WV's Aim To Bear Down

    Records: Walton-Verona (8-2) | Newport (3-7)

Series History: Walton-Verona leads 4-2 dating back to 1998

Table Setter: Don't let the records deceive you. This game has more potential than the wins and losses suggest. Newport has faced the superior opposition - two time reigning 2A champion Beechwood, ranked Lloyd Memorial, and unbeaten Mason County - while WV traversed a less treacherous path. Schedule strength has a tendency to show up this time of year.

Impact players: Walton-Verona's offense runs through quarterback Jackson Smith. It's rare that he's not the best athlete on the field and he touches the ball every snap. If anyone is going to challenge him for the title of 'best athlete on the field', Newport's Quincy Barber is the best candidate. He's their leading receiver and defensive back, and has taken four kicks back for touchdowns.

It dates back to 2012.  Walton didn't have a team in 1998.  Their first football season was 10 years later in 2008. I think Walton wins this one, close early, but pulls away a little late.

Not going to try and change anyone's mind. What I will ask for is a thread like this the first week of basketball district tournaments and another thread like this the first round of district baseball. Ugly games abound in the other sports as well. Basketball games 100-20. Baseball games 25-0 in 3 innings. I don't get why it bothers people for football and not for the other sports.

But here is a solution. Allow any team that doesn't want to play a first round game to choose not to play. I say there will be very, very few teams that choose not to play a first round playoff game in any sport.

The problem for most people, I think, is because baseball and basketball have always accepted everyone into district play at the end of the year so it has just be accepted.  And football used to be fewer classes, with larger district play, and only two teams go into the playoffs.  A lot of people, on some really good teams, didn't make the playoffs and it bothers them that everyone gets in and there is such a large disparity in scores. Personally I think the 4 class system, with 4 teams getting into the playoffs, was the sweet spot between my youth, my high school years, and now old man critiquing everything.

  3. There is a huge shortage of officials, caused by many different things, making a perfect storm so to say.  Teams in the southern part of the NKOA's assigning have been asked to move games all year, and have had games with less than 5 officials.  Middle school games in that same area have had games with 3 officials.  Youth leagues have had to cancel, officiate their own games, or work with 1 or 2 officials.  It is something that needs to be worked on and fixed from multiple levels.  More officials are needed, patients is needed with those new officials, crowds need to start cheering for their team and not cussing the officials, and admin need to step up and make sure that anyone that in screaming a bunch of four letter words at the officials are either shut up, or removed.  This will take years to recoup from, as it has taken years to get to this point.

  4. During the pandemic of Covid-19 you could play any out of state teams that the county their school was located in touched the border of Kentucky.  Switzerland Co touches at least at Gallatin County, and has been on their schedule for 7 or 8 years.  Carroll and Trimble Counties have played them in the past, and I think Owen Co is also playing them this coming football season.

  5. I believe 1 thru 7 WV is the best team in the district. WV has showed they can win without Miles scoring big, can SK win without big numbers from Niece, I don't think so. Grant will have to show me they can beat some good teams, time will tell. Williamstown seems to be out of the equation. Hard to crown a district winner in the middle of December.

I am not even close to crowning Grant Co as champs, because I think that Walton wins that district, but how much bigger of a win do you need out of Grant Co than a win at Oldham Co. For me, that is a pretty quality win against a quality opponent.

  6. The question is if both teams have the same seed who will host. KHSAA will put out a thing at the beginning of the year that will answer that. In years past when it was a much simpler time odd districts hosted in odd years and even districts hosted in even years. But now you could have two odd districts playing each other.

Here is a link for last years layout and who hosted what in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

  7. I don't know how "lazy" they have been in their hires. When Matt Jacobson hired the girl's head coach during his tenure as AD, it was the only person that applied. Hard to make home run hires, when you're intentionally walked. Maybe this time there is a fastball up in the zone that they can hit it out of the park, and stop being "lazy" with their hires.

  8. FYI #1 - JCPS and Oldham County schools are worlds apart when it comes to pay.

FYI #2 - Wonderful test scores don't buy many groceries for a coach's family.

FYI #3 It's one of the top paying jobs in the 8th Region, if you have trouble paying for groceries there, don't coach at Trimble, Gallatin, or Owen. You'd have a hard time buying bubble gum.

  9. I have to agree with Walter on this one, I know that when Nethery was going to coach at Eminence, they were building a 4 million dollar gym. And when I was there last season there were still playing in that cracker jack box of a gym. I would be more concerned with the fact that the football/baseball field is messed up. Or the fact that they cannot host district for baseball and softball because their fields do not meet KHSAA specifications. So I hope your friend isn't holding his breathe.

  10. Makes me wonder why the former coach wanted this so bad and then leaves to make someone else try to fix it.

Makes me wonder if you know anything about the former coach, and why he would leave like this.... It's like the old Transformer slogan, there more than meets the eye. He had no intention of leaving there when he took the job, or when he went out of district. Stuff happened, things changed, and he decided to do what was best for him, and his family.

I hope they get a new coach, for the sake of the kids, but Grant County has done this to themselves....and the kids are the ones that will be hurt.

  11. They are really close to being 11-7. I am not saying there were a 18-0 team. What I am saying is that they have a really nice player in Penny, an awesome, HOF coach in Drury, and are historically hard to beat at home. I am saying that it is hard to beat Anderson Co in Anderson Co. I am saying that they only lost 2 players off of last years team that beat Gallatin by 20, in Warsaw, a Gallatin Co team that won 20 games and went to the semi's of the 8th Region Tournament. I am saying that it is a little bit of an upset that Gallatin Co won at Anderson.
