  1. Halstead came out of nowhere to have a breakout season in 2017. His versatility makes him very difficult to defend. Good speed, change of direction, vision, and toughness. He could have a huge year.

Obviously Sammons will get plenty of ink. His poise in the pocket and quick decision making/progressions will continue to get better. He's already got plenty of arm talent.

Greenup will have to replace Isaiah Greene and some key linemen on both sides of the ball (Urbina, Tolliver, Short), but overall, they should continue to move forward as a program in year three under Grizzle.

I don't know that they'll make up much ground on what should be a loaded Johnson Central squad. A better question is, can Greenup catch Ashland this year?

Johnson Central always tough especially with Joe Jackson returning to the mix but I think Greenup can be competitive with Ashland this year.

Talented group of seniors who’ve played together since 1st grade. Should be an exciting year for the Musketeers.

  2. Once a team is up 35 points the running clock starts. Once a running clock starts, it cannot be reversed even if the opposing team closes the gap. I have no idea what was wrong with Greenup in the first half (I have my opinions but will keep them to myself) but they decided they needed to play basketball in the second half instead of tiddlywinks and started closing the gap on the score but it was too late for them to make it respectable with a running clock.

Ashland has definitely improved their game from last year. I don’t think they missed a shot in the first half. Those kids were pulling up from half court it seemed like. Anyway, hopefully Greenup gets it together to have a decent season.

  3. Any team can beat any team on any given day. There were 4 teams last night who won but lost to that same opponent in regular season.

With that being said, I do believe the system is broken and needs to be fixed. I like taking the top 3 with the #1 seeds getting a bye. I think that gives everyone something to work toward. Having 4 teams from each district in playoffs is too much. You had teams going to playoffs and didn’t win a single regular season game. You had teams in other districts that maybe had a 4-6 or even a 5-5 season and didn’t get in.

They need to reclassify the schools and each district should have the same number of schools in that district instead of this district having 6 schools and that district has 4 schools.

  4. I believe we (GC) have that same ref in common. I truly believe he looks over the schedule from our JFL to Varsity and laughs an evil laugh with a “i’ll get you my pretty” when he sees GC. When he is announced you can hear the GC fan base collectively sigh because we know we are in for a long night. He has followed us and reffed games out of region. He even uses his nickname when announced especially when GC/Raceland play each other because he doesn’t know which fan base dislikes him more. There should be a system in place to evenly rotate these refs. It seems like we have the same crew every Friday Home or away. I look forward to playoffs with different officials, don’t know if it’s any better but at least there’s not a bias I hope. This one ref in particular has reffed our boys since 2nd grade and he’s not a fan.

  5. Greenup will continue to get better and better. The young qb is very talented but can get rattled. In time he will learn to handle the pressure. I do believe Ashland was not expecting Greenup to give them a challenge. We could go back and analyze the plays, the calls, and so on and so on that could have swung it Greenup’s way but what I take away from that game is Greenup is no longer a guaranteed win for some of the teams in this area.

  6. Greenup does want this one for the W. But I hear the main goal for the year is to give Ashland a loss. Alot of friendships and close ties between all the players on both teams...Always loved this match up because its good clean football. The way they have prepared for this game is like any other but the head coaches in this county are related and or worked with each other for years. Should be a heck of a game. Still see momentum being the wick to the dynamite. Who ever gets fired up first >> "Wins The Day" - "Wins The County".......

  7. Totally agree. Greenup was not mentally prepared for Fleming. That and the short rest was a factor as well. Their DB's looked sloppy and the Qb was out of sorts but I believe it was a good learning experience for a young team and they should look different this coming Friday against Raceland. The long ball threat wont be as big of a factor in this game and greenup looks solid on Run Defense. The Halstead kid has produced 90-100+ yd games in every outing and The receiver group for GC is well balanced and the Qb completion percentage is well above the average for this area. The transfer kid from Boyd County to Raceland has proven himself to be a major asset on both sides of the ball (Dalton?). It'll be a close game .... wouldnt bet the bank on either side. Should be a great atmosphere with a great turnout.

  8. And taking nothing away from Greenup for leading most of the game and taking advantage of Fleming County's multiple turnovers (2 in the red zone and 1 they returned for a Td), but Fleming was out of sorts on offense as well. You see, they lost their best player (pre-season district player of the year in Cats Pause and a kid with D1 offers) in the first game. The star of their first game, was limited in practice all week due to an injury and their starting left tackle was in an accident yesterday morning and didn't play. They were coming off an emotional win over long time rival Mason County and could have been looking ahead to rival Rowan County. They, as well, only found out Wednesday morning they would be playing on Thursday.

However, they still beat a very good Greenup County team. I say all that because sometimes you just lose ball games. I know Greenup had a lot going on this past week and I am sure they will next week as well. As will Fleming and every other team that plays. They will regroup and be fine!

Absolutely. That game could have easily gone either way. Terrible news for the Alexander kid. Tremendous ball player and really hate to see him have to sit out his senior year. That kid made the most incredible catch against Greenup last year in the endzone. Just amazing. Good luck to Fleming on the rest of their season.

  9. I don't want to take anything away from Fleming Co. they played great and capitalized on Greenup's mistakes however Greenup was all out of sorts last night. They played a tough game on Saturday full of emotions and then had an unexpected turnaround of playing on Thursday having to travel 1.5 hours. They'll regroup and be ready for the next one. They are relatively young with a young QB at the helm. It was an unexpected loss but you'll have that. I look for them to have a good season.

    Congrats to Fleming Co.
