  1. From what I have heard it is not a good situation. Kids are wanting something (someone) different. There are players in the system. They just don't play anymore. 2 years ago the 8th grade team had 2 dozen kids alone. Now only 3-4 are still playing as sophomores.

Why do they want someone different? What has changed?

  2. Not allowed to use the name of this site.(That's for the guru, if he cares to play)

I like it! If I was on your game selection committee, LOL, I would say Beechwood vs Mayfield, and Belfry vs Highlands.

  3. Oopps, you are absolutely correct, I misread that just a little bit. Hummm...not a football coach by any stretch, but given that choice (though a tougher one for sure) I still think a second scrimmage leading up to the season opener is probably more valuable than spring practice/scrimmage, ESPECIALLY if they still allow 7 on 7 in the summer.

They do allow 7 on 7, a lot of it actually. I think if you are a big school, and will have a lot of your players, then you do spring ball. The smaller schools that have some kids playing baseball or soccer (Spring Sport in Georgia) probably don't have spring practice and do the 2 scrimmages.

  4. Ok, the way I read it, it's still a 10 day spring practice session with one potential "game" against another team..."game" probably being much more like a scrimmage. Don't the kids do a team scrimmage game against each other at the end of spring practice anyway? So, instead of hitting each other, you hit someone else on that 10th day. So really no drastic change after all doesn't appear. I see no issue with it.

And, if you read further in the article, if you DON'T do a spring game, then you can pick up an extra scrimmage game in the fall. If I were a coach this would be MUCH more valuable to me, so I wouldn't do a spring game and would pick up an extra scrimmage in the fall.

It is actually if you do not have spring practice you can have 2 scrimmages, not if you don't play a spring game.

  5. I'm hearing his defensive coordinate may be coming I'm also hearing a few names being thrown around for a lineman coach.

@ThatGirl, if your son plays it looks to me like he's getting a nice coaching staff put in place. You need to get all your sons friends to come out and play. Like @plantmanky said, 30 kids on a 5a football team don't/won't cut it.

Your son needs teammates, even if they only practice hard against him to make him better. Football is the ultimate team sport.

High five to Rocky Franz and Kevin Letcher for this hire and the retooling of the staff.

He held a workout to get to know the players today. His defensive coordinator was there. It also looks like he had Sizemore, Maples, and Wolf. So I believe he is keeping them as well. I am hearing a name coming in to coach his defensive line, other than that I don't believe he has anyone else in mind, but is looking to add to the staff.

  6. Actually ... just so everyone is on the same page ... the football field stays as the football field.

The current baseball field and all grassy areas up top will be turfed ... so the soccer teams will have their own field during the fall (with bleachers, lights, etc) ... which then becomes the baseball field and softball field in the spring.

The city and the school are also in the process of upgrading General Ormsbey to a multi-use facility that will feature an 8 lane track (along with additional ammenities that will be available to the the general public).

That is good the football field will be stay football only, and that soccer will have their own place.

  7. I honestly can't believe there were many big names for this gig.

The facilities are first class, but at 5A and the interest for football within the school at a 2a to 3a level, this job is a real challenge.

The new coach should have support from the school administration and the local community. There doesn't seem to be much pressure to win or grow the program so that's a plus for a relocating coach.

When they re-posted the job this month, only 5 people applied. Can't say I blame anyone not wanting this job, it has been handled almost as bad as the Bell County job.
