  1. NDA replaced 7 starting seniors from last year's roster. That's a big turnover for any team. They also had Jr. that started last year who hasn't seen much playing time this year because of injuries. So 8 new starters should take them a while to gel and having a few injuries have hurt them too.

KHSAA website had Dixie at 5 shots and scored 3 times. NDA had 14 shots but only scored once.

  2. Now let me preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the Notre Dame girls and their basketball abilities but I want to add my perspective. As a team they went 8-18 last year with 2 seniors and 7 juniors on their roster. They averaged 46 pts per game and gave up almost 55. The 2 seniors were 2 of the 3 leading scorers and Abbey Tierney (junior 2017) was the leading scorer at around 10 pts/game. The seniors are gone and Abbey was able to play only 2 games due to an injury that basically ended her season so I'm told. That left 6 juniors to take over the team that between them averaged about 15.5 pts/game.

Did you really expect those juniors to carry this team to a better record? I'm just asking. Sometimes a program gets to the point where a coach has a tough decision to make on whether to cut older girls that may really not add a lot to the overall team record but have been with the program for 6 years, and whether to suck it up and try to develop the younger girls at the jv level. How did the jv team do this year? Do they have some really good talent in the pipeline? Now I'm not saying the coach had no fault in the overall record but looking at the stats on KHSAA in 12 games against the better northern Ky teams and some other good Ohio and Ky. teams they averaged about 30 pts/game and gave up nearly 60 pts/game. Those were 12 of their 21 losses. Sometimes too when girls get to be seniors they just lose interest in sports. I don't know and we may never know but sometimes we are too quick to throw all the blame on the coach.

How are the High School basketball schedule created? Is it a contract for 2 years or can you change it each year?

  3. The NDA Saturday league is generally horrible. I am not sure what the answer is. When my daughter played a few years back they literally only had a good game against St. Pius for TWO YEARS. If you come from a school that is not lucky enough to play in the public school league your only hope for decent basketball is for your team to get in Ohio tournaments or do AAU. This cannot help. There are a variety of reasons schools aren't in the public school league most of which are not really fixable. After two years of bad experiences some girls lose interest. This is where the schools that allow kids to "play up" have a bit of an advantage, but that is not particularly fair if you have enough freshman for a freshman team.

I don't think anyone from NDA runs or shows up to that league anymore. Not that would change anything about the league but you think it would give allow the program to get to know some of the incoming freshman and their parents.

  4.

From feeder schools? Right now only IHM and St. Pius play in the Public Middle School. All the other feeder schools only play in the NDA Saturday league.

Yes, but alot of them play AAU together on a team. They have for a few years, and very good. It's a bunch of 5'8" athletic kids that run and defend. The Thelen kid could end up very tall, and she can do it all. The point guard from St. Pius is a dominant player. My guess would be this group + at least 3 tall athletic freshmen + Thapar will put NDA back on the map in two years. (Assuming they all play)

Don't most of them play other club sports (volleyball and soccer) too? Let's see how many of them decide to continue playing multiple sports after their Freshman year. If we go by past NDA history most of them won't continue to play Basketball.

The last Coach to have a team with multiple sports athletes was Coach Levandusky.

  5. "Really? I don't buy that. Good sales pitch by club coaches. So you don't need to play select basketball? Why not?"

Not sure what you are saying you buy or not, but just to clarify the club thing is the issue at NDA. Club volleyball and club soccer for junior high girls is significantly more dominant and popular than any one AAU basketball club. The programs are massive. They start them young and programs develop them up through high school. AAU basketball for girls, from what I've seen, is more of a few good parent coaches that got a few things organized, and girls who were dedicated to their training. It is a very big difference, and club soccer and club volleyball dominate feeding kids to Notre Dame.

I've heard, but don't know for a fact, that NDA basketball and track coaches, currently are not overly flexible sharing time. It has been the problem with some of NDA's best talent not playing basketball.

That said, the current freshmen year and in coming 8th grade group is very talented specific to basketball. Will see if they get it worked out.

From feeder schools? Right now only IHM and St. Pius play in the Public Middle School. All the other feeder schools only play in the NDA Saturday league.

  6. For the girls on the floor for NDA at the end of the game, this was their last organized basketball game ever. Surely you can appreciate that and regarding getting some “valuable” experience, it would have been equal to their freshman and JV games.

The underclassmen at NDA will be just fine with or without the “valuable” experience of playing the last few minutes of this game.

Hats off to Dixie and good luck as you begin tournament play.

I was glad to see all 6 seniors playing last night. This was a rough season for NDA Basketball (7-21).

  7. 96/97 to 08/09 Cheryl Darpel

    09/10 to 12/13 Nichole Levandusky

    13/14 to 15/16 Wyatt Foust

    16/17 to present Mia Cooper

Well I guess that just says it all.

I feel like the past four years it's been a coaching carousel. Not only with the head coaches changing but for the assistants too. I'm not sure why the assistants changed every year but they did.

  8. I doubt NDA prioritizes any sport above another. It's about what sports the parents and students choose to put above basketball. NDA's tradition in Soccer, Tennis, Golf, Swimming, and Volleyball is unmatched. And softball has been turned around too. NDA has the athletes, they just choose other sports.

I agree. A few years ago Coach Levandusky team, had her starting 5 all played multiple sports. Clemons, Kellam, & Voskuhl (all played soccer), Ogle (volleyball) and Smith (Softball). Now only few try it but most focus on just 1 sport when they hit the varsity level at NDA.

  9. It is no more complicated than NDA simply doesn't have the talent on their roster this season to compete at the highest levels. Talent levels in high school basketball are and should be cyclical, even at private schools. Good coaching cannot overcome talent deficiencies, so please give NDA's coaches a break. They have a lot of young kids on their roster who are learning and this season may just be a stepping stone to build for future success. They are also in a tough district and region this year. The 9th is a bear with Conner, Ryle, Holy Cross, Holmes, Highlands, Cooper and so on. Losing to Grant is not a sign the sky is falling. Grant's a very good team that has a good shot at winning their district and competing for the 8th as they are one of the 4 or 5 best teams in that region.

Are you saying they should abandon the starting 5 and let the younger ones play? Do you think the deficit that NDA is losing by would be less with the younger team?

  10. The margins maybe a little high but those teams are no push overs and Brossart although quite young have a ton of talent. The jv team is pretty good especially the St Agnes girls. I think the future is not as bad as some may think.

    I completely disagree with you.

  11. Beal transferred from Holy Cross right? Is she eligible? There was all the discussion about Martin moving from Notre Dame to Highlands but I didn't see any discussion on Beal going from Holy Cross to Boone County. I don't follow girls basketball that closely so there probably is an obvious explanation that I am unaware of.

Let's not start all questions about Martin moving or not moving all over again?:lol2:
