  1. No defense...very frustrating. Half-court offense isn't very good. They can be fun to watch in the open floor, but are often out of control.

As an IU fan...I think it's time to move on. Just one game, but it's the same story, and there's plenty of talent this year to be a top 10 team.

  2. Also visited the New Castle Fieldhouse in New Castle, Indiana on the same trip. Great place for a high school game. Massive high school gym dug into the ground so the concourse is around the top and there's seating on all sides.

Went to a sectional semifinal game at New Castle, about 5 or 6 years ago. Walked in the door, and the first game was in it's last seconds, going into overtime. Probably 6,000 in the gym, and while obviously nowhere near capacity, it was quite the atmosphere. Definitely felt like a step back in time. Also got to experience the Wigwam at Anderson High before it closed. Pretty amazing.

My list would be Assembly Hall & Cameron Indoor.

  3. Clemson relies on having better athletes and Deshaun Watson getting the ball out to his playmakers. Notre Dame is a more physical team than Clemson, which would help them out more in the sloppy conditions.

The "Notre Dame has inferior athletes" argument has been valid for the last decade, but not this year. Also...the poor weather obviously did have a bigger impact on ND, as they had 4 turnovers to 1 for Clemson...and still outgained them by 140 yards.

As an Irish fan, Clemson is the one top five team that I would LOVE for them to get a shot at in the playoffs.

  4. Fournette getting manhandled. I know it's hard for people to come to grips with, but when you watch this game, it's pretty obvious these 2 teams are not elite.

Neither QB is very good, and if Fournette doesn't get going, LSU has very little offense. People love the defenses, because they make big hits, and the crowd gets really excited, but really...is either defense that great? I've seen a man get behind the Bama secondary at least 4 times already.

After the game, if you haven't already, take a look at the schedules these 2 teams have played. You won't be very impressed.

  5. If you get the chance, read Friday Night Lights. The movie (which I consider one of the greatest films about football ever) isn't able to fully describe the environment which was created in Midland nor the history which created it. Truly an eye opening book about high school athletics in Texas- not just Midland. The author made a lot of enemies, but he gave a fair and balanced account. By his own admission, he both loved and hated his time in Midland. Loved the passion, the energy the atmosphere- but hated what it sacrificed in getting there.

Yes...totally agree. The book really gets into some of the finer details about how crazy things were.

  6. 16oz of coffee, not every day, but probably 5 out of 7 days a week. Sweet tea is the go-to drink for me.

I used to absolutely destroy Mtn. Dew, and other soft drinks, but haven't had one in 9 years. It was actually a lot easier then I thought it would be, and only rarely do I even think about it...mainly craving a grape soda when eating peanut butter crackers.

  7. My wife is in her 9th year of teaching. I would agree with the original premise that schools would benefit from having more male teachers...however, I also agree that it's just not that appealing to young men in their 20's to pursue a career in this field, dealing with children. Ironically, the children are actually the easiest part of the job.

The reality is that all schools deal with a massive amount of students who have not been taught to respect adults. My wife's school is not urban by any means, but some of the stories she tells are really hard to believe. A lot of students are initially, simply victims of ridiculously selfish decisions made by their parent or guardian. They become a product of this, and soon the cycle is repeated.

The red tape is pretty silly too, but now I'm just ranting...so I'll stop.

  8. I've got 3...

    1) ND vs. Boston College in 1993. Irish coming off the win against #1 FSU. BC took a 20 or so point lead in the 4th quarter, and the Irish came back to take the lead late, only to have Glenn Foley lead BC down for the game-winning field goal as time expired. ND still should have won the championship over FSU, but that's probably for another thread.

    2) Game 6 2003 NLCS..."The Bartman Game"

I really don't blame Bartman, cause the signs were already there for an epic collapse. I'm convinced that #1, Alou wouldn't have caught the ball, and #2, the Cubs would have blown it anyways. They still had Game 7 at home the next night, but never have I been so sure that a home team was going to lose a Game 7.

#3 ND vs. Kentucky...2015 Elite Eight

The fact that they led for much of the game...still with a chance at the buzzer. If Grant's shot from the corner would have gone in, I really don't know what I would have done.

  9. The punt thing was maybe the single dumbest play I've ever seen in my life in professional sports.

Still wondering on how the onside kick in the first half was given to the Pats. If you review it, and obviously see that the Pats player never had control of the ball, and then see Moncrief emerge with the ball for the Colts, how do you rule Patriots' ball? I don't know. It was a big, big play...although I still think New England would have somehow found a way to win, even if the Colts were given possession, scored, and went up 21-10.

By the way, Julian Edelman is easily on my top 5 list of guys that I would like to see get blasted (of course without any concussion issues) while going across the middle. He's a solid player, but I'm not a fan.

  10. ND's tackling was atrocoius in the first half...Both defenses really struggled for a majority of the game. ND had a real chance to blow this open early 2nd quarter, but USC took advantage of a couple of mistakes, and got right back into the game.

Irish were better in the 2nd half. Overall, any win against USC is a good one. Honestly, was impressed with the Trojan's offense, considering the drama of the week.

  11. As great as Fournette is, LSU and their QB play is terrible. No way they are a top team, IMO. What have they done anyway?

I agree.. LSU's reputation is based on a home blowout against an obviously mediocre Auburn team. They haven't done much, and they really struggle in the passing game. Fournette can't win it on his own when they start playing quality opponents.

    Most impressive so far:

    Utah

    Clemson

    Baylor

    Michigan

    Alabama

  12. 1 Notre Dame (mainly because they've had several mythical national championships awarded to them back in the day due to a very biased media)

    2 Ohio State

    3 Southern Cal

    4 Texas

    5 Tennessee

Every storied program has mythical, or questionable, championships in their past. Such as Alabama in '73, when the UPI used to make their final vote before the bowl games. Notre Dame beat them in the Sugar Bowl, but Alabama was still UPI National Champs...and yeah, you better believe Bama still claims that one.

  13. LeBatard is okay...don't hear him much. Sometimes has a decent take, especially on NBA stuff. Cincy sports talk struggles, in my opinion, due to having one-man shows.

I know it may just be for financial reasons, but if not, they really need to give these guys a co-host. MoeHawk Mondays used to be very solid. It's tough to just listen to guys argue with themselves, or bring up obscure arguments like the Columbus thing, just to fill a show.

Best sports talk I've heard is in Chicago. Some great shows up there, and obviously, with the huge market, they can afford a lot of talent.
