I think any top 25 list starts with these schools. Am I missing anyone?

Male. traditionally keeps talent, strong alumni base, and players stay eligible

  2. Well UK has lost to UCLA, UL, Kansas and beat UNC. One bad loss to TN. I think UL has more bad losses. But I think UL has played a tougher sched. But UK didnt lose to either of the teams bad in top 10.

This was UL's only bad loss of the season. That's why before this they were still in the running for a #1 seed. Everyone else was ranked. Losses to: Virginia (2), Baylor, UNC, FSU, Notre Dame, and now Wake. I think UK should move ahead for now. UofL still has plenty of time to improve their resume'/ranking with Notre Dame next, and the ACC tourney.

  3. I believe Lebron hit a 3 from about 40 feet out so I don't know what kind of defense that can be played there' date=' and that's what an All Star game is, a showcase of offensive talent.[/quote']

I guess it's just not impressive to me to see wide open jumpers and dunks. Dunk on someone or coming through traffic. Yes. Wide open lanes and people laying on the court. Nope. Not impressive to a high level, or ex high level hooper. That's why retired nba guys even spoke on it.

  4. Worst played all star game ever. It wasn't even a good pickup game. Maybe because I played ball. They used to at least try to play defense halfway. Kevin Hart could've gotten 20 tonight. It's been going that way the past few years. Next year a team will have 200 points (all uncontested). Should be some level of competition. It's a glorified layup line out there.

  5. I was wondering if others were noticing. Though he doesn't turn it over, Q dribbles so much that the offense gets stagnant. Right now the offense looks better. They're moving the ball quicker, and with mitchell pushing the pace they're up the court faster as well. Defensively they're better as well, as q struggles to contain any oppossing pg.

However to answer your question, yes they need Q. I just hope that they're showing him the difference on film. If he comes back and Rick makes him get the ball moving quickly like they're doing now, we'll be great going forward. They need him, but him going out (and seeing the difference without him) and returning may have been a blessing in disguise. Reveals a weakness (holding the ball) that I hope Rick notices. This should help exponentially going forward into tourney time. Hicks developing more while q was out helped as well.

  6. Sloan left before Gatewood decided to leave. Sloan's departure probably encouraged Gatewood to pursue other options. He was loading up on other transfers and young talent (a couple of higher rated 8th graders not from TC originally) to come to Taylor County. Moore would've been his home school (where his brother went and played a few years ago, and Sloan actually played for them as an 8th grader while Gatewood was there while he was at Moore's middle school). He wanted to come home for his last year, but wanted to go to a good bball school, so he chose Ballard. Sloan had never transferred previously in High School as it seems people are alluding to. He simply left with Gatewood immediately after middle school. TC is the only hs that he's been at. So he probably figured he'd have his pick moving back home when he's never been in high school there before. I would've assumed that he'd have been eligible. He could've picked his school coming out of middle school, and could've if he'd have come from out of state, so why not now? I'm with PP on this. It's unfortunate for the kid. Especially when you have a well known player in the same city play for one of the top teams in the state after Christmas, and then decide to transfer to another school in the same region (and city) and actually be ruled eligible to play by the KHSAA by the district tourney in the very same season? It's crazy.

  7. He's good, but not the player he's hyped to be. They don't have enough. It's still Trinity by a mile, and Ballard 2nd.

I agree. May actually be a toss up for 2nd. I'm hearing rumblings that Sloan may be ruled ineligible by KHSAA. Heard a couple of weeks ago, so may not be true since I haven't seen anything in the paper about it.

  8. Next up recruits has him 32nd in his class.

Most of the recruiting services will rank on college potential and not as high school players. Example. Quentin Snider was higher rated high school player, and was the best player in the state, but Raymond Spalding has more NBA potential. McNeil Definitely isn't the 32nd best high school player (much higher), but may not be as high when ranking for the next level than some other bigger or more athletic players.

  9. I would say during AAU you are on a team with individuals that are picked for certain roles and certain positions. I feel in HS kids may play out of their normal position because their team may lack that certain role. I know you said college, but using you for an example. You were forced to play the 4/5 due to being the 3rd tallest on the team when that was your not your normal position. Had you had a 6'7+ kid playing he 5 it would have pushed you more into a shooting role which you were better at.

I think in AAU (or any league mentioned below) kids play more of the role they will want to play in college. Just my thoughts.

    Agreed.

  10. I disagree with your last statement. To play on a shoe circuit, you can't have just a decent handle. If you're playing on something like that TYBA nonsense then you can get away with it.

No PG on EYBL, UAA or Adidas Gauntlet has just a "decent" handle.

Didn't know you meant a shoe circuit specifically. You said AAU, so that's a broad statement. Most kids in AAU aren't good enough to play on shoe circuits. Understand your point now.

  11. I have been the tournamnet director for the KING OF THE BLUEGRASS for 35 years and I have tried for 35 years to get Indiana schools. It's simple...Indiana schools CAN"T play in tournaments against out-of-state teams. I know 90% of every states rules and regulations. For example: most of the southern states (the Bible Belt) will not allow games on SUNDAY…Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Flordia, the Cariolinas and several others. Some states don't allow coaches and/or players to receive gifts. Several states have milage restrictions. Each high school with out-of-state teams that do not border your state must be sanctioned by the NFHS>

Does this apply to Out of State teams playing in IN school tourneys? I know that Central went up and won the Gary Holiday Tourney in Gary, IN, last season, and they played Gary Westside and Gary Lew Wallace.

  12. Agree, HS is such a different animal than AAU. For some reason kids tend to play at another level during AAU season. Maybe some of the HS coaches should take note.

I think that some of how kids are used depends on personnel. For instance, I played at a Division 2 school in college. I'm a 6'5" knock down shooter with a solid handle, but my change of direction and quickness isn't anything to be desired. So I couldn't check a 1, and some 2's (on that level some 2's were 6'1" and cat quick as opposed to 6'4"-6'6". Though I am only 6'5", I was the 3rd tallest player on my team. so though I played much better away from/facing the basket, I played more 4 and 5 than anything (played 2 and 3 when they went zone). I was much better in other situations, and routinely dominated my teammates in individual and open gym format where we didn't have to play within the confines of our system. Even if I wouldn't coached I may have still played the 4 (which I hated at the time). I just probably would've switched to a 4 out offense to take better advantage of my strengths instead of a 3 out 2 in for the most part.

In saying that. A kid may be 6'4" with a decent handle, and may can play the 1 or 2 on the AAU circuit because he has others around him bigger or not as skilled. He may have to play the 3-5 on HS because he may be the tallest on the team, and the 5th best ball handler.

  13. This is the HUGE difference. If your aren't in the elite national players group, even if you are ranked 1 or 2 in the state of Kentucky by the end of Sophomore year, potential or not, chances of you being in the NBA are VERY slim. Doesn't mean you can't play in the Pros, just not in the NBA. Yes, there are some exception, Anthony Davis, but they can be counted on 2 hands. I have seen Romeo play about 4-5 times, he is special, I have also seen the other kids play, they are very good. Special gets you to the NBA, very good lets you play at the higher next level.

Regardless, all the players talked about have a bright future.

This is all true. Romeo is special. Not only in ability, but work ethic and character. When looking at potential, I went by the literal definition - having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something into something in the future. I say Jay has that potential. He has size and athleticism, and the feel for the game. Whether he realizes that is on him. Some kids are great high school players, but don't have realistic pro potential. Whether Jay or any other kid that may have potential actual reaches that is no doubt up to work ethic, character, and the Man upstairs. When I said he had pro potential I didn't say he was NBA bound. I said he has potential. It's on Jay to get on the court first to play, and then to work on his game and become a better player to reach that potential if he really wants it. Hundreds of kids with the potential around the world. Only a few with the work ethic and character to make it. But he has to develop that. That's the key word. But he has the potential to develop into that if he wants.

  14. Just got off the phone with someone and we were talking about how hard it is to be "D1 potential" and now we've got people saying "pro potential" for a 16 yr old.

I say pro potential for Jay Scruggs because I've seen him play. Also, his coach his freshman year (Bibby) who's coached two first rounders in Rondo and Russell in high school also felt that the kid has that potential if he keeps his head on straight. Same way Romeo Langford of New Albany is 16 and has pro potential, though he's more seasoned than Jay right now. This isn't used lightly when referring to him.

  15. Where do Dallas Thornton, George Tinsley and Wesley Cox fit in? Cox is one my of all-time favorite players.

OOOOOOHHHHHH THANK YOU! I definitely forgot about them. Wesley Cox is definitely top 5! Okay when you bring those in Mike isn't top 10. Let me revisit this list. Here's the top 10:

    Darrell Griffith

    Bobby Turner

    Wesley Cox

    Ralph Beard

    Dallas Thornton

    Winston Bennett

    George Tinsley

    Jason Osborne

    GG Gordon

    Henry Husky

  16. If there is a 2018 list of top players then Jay Scrugg (Trinity) and Curt Lewis (Valley) def need to be on it.

I've watched both of these guys play this summer and they are both def top 10 players in this class.

Jay 6'5 lefty that does absolutely everything he wants on the court. Shoots it at a high level. Scores at a high level and runs the floor and jumps out the gym.

Curt 6'4 PG super freak athlete. Jumps out the gym and passes his butt off and gets to the hole whenever. He also can rebound like a 6'10 guy and finishes well.

Jay transferred from Central his freshman year and had to sit out his sophomore year. Look for him to add impact to an already loaded trinity team.

Curt started freshman and sophomore year at Valley and was the main reason for the surprising success they had. He was 2nd team all 6th region and according to pure prospects his interests include Xavier, Georgia state, EKU WKU, NKU, Evansville & Ohio

These are both top D1 talents and word around Louisville is Jay is pro potential.

You are absolutely right. Great talent. If he would've played his freshman year that team for Central that already knocked off Manual, Trinity, and PRP would've been much better. He was the best player in the program that year, and they were a top 10 team in the state. If this kid gets on the court and handles his business, he could be the next pro out of the city. Like Curt, just needs to mature a little. Once he does skies the limit.

Curt is a beast as well and is a high major d1 type player if he improves his jumpshot.

  17. You don't want Winston Bennett on anything that brands your school if this also takes into consideration his post-Louisville Male deeds. Griffith and Turner are no doubters. Osborne, meh.

You're absolutely right. Despite his shortcomings as a person, I was speaking strictly on basketball terms. You're right about the branding part though. Osborne was Mr. Basketball and a McDonald's All-American in High School.

  18. This is a good list but it's hard for me not to at least mention Michael Bush. I know football was obviously his better sport but man that dude was a freak on the basketball court.

Mike was very good. I wouldn't put him ahead of Larry O'Bannon on this list though. Or Henry Husky or GG Gordon. He's top 10 though for sure. That's saying a bunch at a powerhouse like Male though.
