  1. Pikeville loses their starting QB, 2 linemen, an excellent LB and a couple young men who started on both sides of the ball. One of whom was a record setting WR, speed demon and team leader. Clearly, there will be some huge voids which must be filled if Pikeville is to repeat their regular season success.

On the positive side, the team is loaded with young talent and the leading rusher returns after an extraordinary season. In addition the panthers have an underclassman at RB who showed flashes of speed, as well as a transfer from Prestonsburg who will likely make an impact at WR, along with several other talented WR's already in place.

It seems keeping the starting RB healthy will be paramount, while I look for the new QB to have much success if adequately protected. Pikeville plays a tough schedule outside of district and marginal within, so they could lose as many as 3 games during the regular season and still be a viable contender to play in Bowling Green.

Playing Letcher Central, Belfry, Hazard and Paintsville will truly test the panthers and going 2-2 in those games would be indicative of a deep playoff run.

  2. The bruins lost an excellent QB, wingback/db, at least two starters on the offensive line and a defensive lineman who was nearly unblockable without the double. Further, the primary speed back graduates, along with a top notch receiver. The good news is that the upcoming senior class is loaded with talent and the head coach is building a winning tradition. Central Hardin must improve on the regular season schedules of the past and as much has definitely been done. Boyle Co., Paducah Tilghman, South Warren and Bowling Green have been added to the schedule this year. This should better prepare the team for the postseason and allow the coaching staff more opportunities to truly evaluate players and schemes.

Returning starters include an all-state candidate at fullback and a linebacker who will likely be considered as well. The linebackers will be an overall strength and the backfield will be stacked with size and speed. The big questions yet to be answered will be at QB and on the offensive line. After seeing spring practice I'm rather optimistic with both considerations, though I claim no definitive genius in evaluating players.

The kicker has a strong leg, though the overall kicking and punting last season was not a strength. This includes kick/punt coverage and is not intended to disparage any individual. Pass defense must improve in order to advance deeper into the playoffs, while the run defense should again be rather strong.

Bullitt East, Collins, John Hardin, Meade Co., North Hardin and Woodford Co. complete the regular season schedule. Meade lost a great deal to graduation but they are always tough and well coached. John Hardin is on the rise and has a ridiculous amount of young talent. I'm going out on a limb and saying Bullitt East will be big and strong, while North Hardin will have no shortage of talent. It seems Woodford Co. may be in a rebuilding phase, though I'll leave that to those with more knowledge on the team.

This schedule will test Central Hardin more than I can remember any in the recent past and it should be an exciting season. Coach Mattingly is going into his second season and has assembled an excellent coaching staff. Clearly, the second year running the wing based offense should increase efficiency, especially with such a talented fullback carrying the mail at roughly six feet tall, 215-220lbs. with good speed.

I hope this added something worthwhile to the discussion and facilitates interest in the Central Hardin football program going forward.

  3. Will Josh take it back if asked? Seems like a coach in Eastern Kentucky had this happen last year. I can't remember where it was. Board members forced the Admin to ask the guy back. Anyone know the school that I'm talking about? Also, you would think the super. would realize the ramifications that letting go (forcing out) a coach as popular as Josh Jaggers. If the talent is down how is a coaching change going to really make a difference. It's just ridiculous how school leadership preaches all this virtue and character message to kids and communities but typically have no loyalty to anyone but themselves and their job. I have encountered both good and Bad administrators over the years. It's obvious and almost shocking when you work for one that is both honest, fair and supportive during good and bad times. The vast majority of these admins. are not on their coaches side due to their own lack of self confidence and inability to not listen to a minority of naysayers or complainers who every HC deals with at some point in there career. If truth be told JJ probably ticked off someone or some little Johny's mom or dad not ever intending to. Probably a position or playing time issue. So those folks most likely had enough influence to use the win loss record against Josh. He will be better off in the long haul from this situation. Maybe not immediately but eventually. Keep your head up and be proud Josh. You are a football coach; the most important person in many young men's lives. In the coaching community we need to support these young coaches and let them know we appreciate them! Thanks Josh for all that you do for kids!

It was Sheldon Clark's coach Shawn Hager, who had the support of parents and players, which got him reinstated rather quickly. It seems that he never should have been let go in the first place, though I must admit some bias, as I grew up with Shawn and we were football and basketball teammates. I haven't seen the guy in over 20 years, but I'd bet my last dollar that he's a good coach.

  4. If it is based off post season success and over an entire career Austin Hatfield may very well have the best resume of anyone for Mr. Football.

    3 Straight Finals Appearances

    Back to Back Titles

Back to Back Finals MVP Awards (Would have 3 in a row had Belfry won a nailbiter in 2012)

3 Straight Finals with 100+ Rushing

Closes his career by going for 235 yards today.

Ran for over 1500 yards and scored 26 TD's as a FULLBACK his Senior season

Who can lay claim to a better "Lifetime Achievement" award of this year's nominees when it matters the most?

Add to that the fact that he's a very good linebacker who also had an impact on defense in the title game. Some may not consider the difficulty of being the hammer for Belfry's offense and then playing defense. Our fullback at Central Hardin(who is very good) never saw the field on defense. I hope Hatfield gets some consideration, especially since all those yards and TDs are bolstered by his defensive contribution.

  5. Both teams seem to have improved considerably since the first game and definitely got some key players healthy. Frankly, this one boils down to which one of the QB's get the last chance to make a play. Both of those kids are amazing players and worthy of being region champs. I'm gonna say CH 20 Meade 14,and any way it goes I'll be pulling for the winner of this game the rest of the way.
