NewCath should be 3rd; Cooper# 4 (based on NCC victory over Cooper).

Botton line: Regional seeds will be much more important than these ratings.

Lets face it. NewCath could not solve CovCath the last few years period. Team built around the "biggs". Now there is only one "big" left, and he has some pretty good talent around him. Win over Cooper last week (who beat CovCath earlier this year) shows they are again one of the 3-4 best teams in No. Ky IMO. Not sure too many on here would disagree with that statement. Plus I am bias... my nephews play on this team. Reason enough to believe they win Friday night.

Interesting.... just how does Cooper get ranked ahead of NewCath? Didn't they play last week? If I remember, NewCath was pretty impressive in that victory. I guess they will have to beat CovCath Friday night to get any respect. Different makeup to this years NC team then in the recent past; will be interesting to see how they match-up with the Colonels this time. Could be surprising...

Jugg....you're not serious. Ohio has 700plus teams and only 31% of the teams make the playoffs. FYI, in Kentucky 221 teams and 192 make the playoffs.... 87% make the playoffs. Explain how Ky has 0-10, 1-9, 2-8 teams in the playoffs, and that is a better system?

Moe also has a very difficult time getting local teams to play them, not just GMC schools. X and Elder has the same issues, I'm sure they aren't lining up to play Colerain either

StX and Colerain have played regular season games for the last 5-6 years. Probably the best (non-conference) rivalry in Cincinnati.

Let's compare guys:

Ky has 6 classes, 32 teams in each class make the playoffs.. total playoff - 192

1A-33 teams, 2A - 37, 3A - 41, 4A - 40, 5A - 38, 6A - 32 total teams 221

So you have 192 of the 221 teams making KY playoffs = 87%

Ohio has 7 Divisions, like KY- 32 teams in each Division make the playoff.

D1 is 2 regions, 16 teams in each region make playoffs = 32 total D1

D2 thru D7, has 4 regions in each division, with 8 teams in ea. region making the playoffs, again 32 teams total per Division.

In Ohio you have 224 teams out of 717 teams making the playoffs 31.2%

Computers are computers but let's take Moeller, who will probably not make the playoffs. Does anyone really believe that there are 16 teams in Ohio's D1, Region 2 better than Moeller??? Absolutely Not.

Living in Northern Ky, I can see a striking difference between the way Ohio and Kentucky run their HS football playoffs. I have said for years, Ky has too many Classes in football for such a few number of teams. Probably 4 classes should be the max IMO. Hard to believe 0-10, 1-9 teams can make playoffs in Ky. Everyone in Kentucky's 6A makes the playoffs; and all but 1 team make the 1A playoffs.

In Ohio Division 1, there are 77 schools of which .........let's guess here...... there are 5 Catholic schools (St. Ignatius, St. Ed's, Elder, Moeller and StX.

A couple of years ago, they decided to go to 7 divisions by separating Division 1 (into big schools and small (big) schools forming Division 2, and moving other divisions down. This is no more than a direct assault the 'privates'. LaSalle went to Division 2, and now they have dominated D2 the last 2 years. So the next step will be to divide D2 and then have 8 divisions.

I'm 99% sure the Top 32 make the playoffs. D1 it is 16 per two regions. D2 - D6 it is 8 per four regions.

You are correct. It is 32 per Division. What I was talking about (and did not make clear) was D1 (which has 2 - 16 team regions). The other 6 Divisions do have 8 per 4 regions. 32 teams in each of the 7 Divisions or 224 total make playoffs, or approx 31% of the total number of teams. Ohio 31% make playoffs; KY 87%.

That's almost 87%.... I guess the "self-esteem" factor is working.

Follow-up....Ohio, Top 16 teams make playoffs.

Top 8 host first round games; all games after that at neutral sites, unlike KY where one could play all games at HOME, except State finals.

Good grief people..... Colonels lose first game to a pretty good football team, and probably will take their lumps Friday night against StX. They will be fine. Remember, it is KY, so only the few District games will count anyway. IMO, they play a good,solid schedule....not an overly tough schedule. They are 5A, not 2A..... so the solid schedule comes with the 5A classification. The Colonel faithful will give Eddie all the time he needs. They will be fine.

Looking at prediction poll...... just curious... the 2 votes for Covington Catholic at this point.... what their thought process was in picking CC? Interesting selection IMO.

Covington Catholic gets the opportunity to play in the first game played in the New Nippert Stadium. I would certainly hope that the entire student body and fans show up. I can assure you that StX will bring at least 8-10,000 fans (because they always do to Nippert). It would be embarrassing if only 200 'crazies' show up... no excuses people. You do not want to be embarrassed....

Moeller only scheduled Trinity after StX changed their schedule. Had nothing to do with dodging the 'Rocks. Seem to remember in Trinity's mythical National Championship year.... the only team to play them close was Cincy StX 17-7, and that was a 3 point game midway thru the 4th. Last 4 times these two teams played:

'12 Trinity 14-13

'11 Trinity 17-7

'10 StX 17-10

'09 StX 43-13

Wish series had continued .....

Cincinnati's Big 5 (GCLS and Colerain) will be interesting to watch. Let's see what happens in Week 2... StX at Colerain. Should be an early indicator.

People seem to forget but Trinity played Cincinnati StX 6 or 7 years in a row. The 'Rocks had some problems beating the Bombers in that stretch.

Bottom line: I feel the scrimmages probably are taken more serious on the Ohio side of the river. Regular season games "count" in Week 1, where in Kentucky - probably nothing counts until the District games. I think there is a sense of urgency in Ohio to identify what you have sooner than Kentucky because in Ohio.... week 1 counts. Just an opinion.

On the contrary.... While the StX defense has been their mainstay over the last several year (offense lacking), that will not be the case this year. StX is loaded offensively....with maturation of now Jr. QB (Sean Clifford), excellent offensive line, size at WR, and excellent RB's. As for Highland's scrimmage, not sure Coach Specht is going to show much, and is the same for Brian W. Cannot blame them.

But considering X opens with Cov. Cath., I am sure some on here will start and use the results of both the Highlands scrimmage, and the Cov Cath game....to get some read on comparing Highlands and Cov Cath. Good early season indicator? probably not, but some will use it.

Who is doing the seeding?

You, and four of your closest friends. (kidding of course). Media, former coaches, or even some of the well-versed people here. I think most people on here, if voting, would have St Henry and Newport (or visa-versa) as 7 and 8 seed. There is no way both of those should be in the top bracket together. Make the season count for something, by seeding whichever 8 teams make it to the Regional.

Since the district tourney will always be played, and both the district winner and runner-up will go, then why not seed the eight team Regional tournament, and avoid the top-heavy bottom bracket that we have this year. Seeds 1-2 would be either CovCath or New Cath, seeds 3-4 would be either Dixie or Holmes, seeds 5-6 would be either Cooper or Boone Co, and seeds 7-8 would be eith St. Henry or Newport. Run the bracket from there. That eliminates 4 of the top 5 being placed in the same bracket, as apparently has happened. Only a thought.

Yeah! I can't tell you how exciting that CovCath / Heritage game would be. Man, that would be awesome. Plus, NewCath / Covington Latin would be riveting. That would be so much better.

Yep... and I am sure CovCath's 69-32 win in the district was a very entertaining game. It really does not matter if it is district or regional, there are always going to be total first round (and maybe second round) mis-matches. Look at the football playoffs first round games..... same story.

There is the cream of the crop...and the rest. Whether you play (and lose) in the districts, or the regional tourney, it really does not matter. You still loss.

Well aware of the fact that district runner-up's have won the regional, and in some cases, done very well down-state. That is great for the 9th region to celebrate. Not argueing the point, but feel a single regional draw, with all teams seeded, produces the same result - a regional champion. Like I said before, it has been going on for over 50 years, and will not change. Do not care for it at the High School level, while it does happen at the college level where the NCAA tournament field does include many teams that lost in their conference tourneys.

Only mentioned Ohio because it is right across the river. Regarding the District tournament in KY, why even have it (when both the winner and runner-up go to the regional?) Once the tournament starts, if you lose (you go home). I'm a '65 Newport Catholic grad, and I know it has always been that way. Today, very few states (if any) allow a losing team to advance. It's all about the additional dollars.

I know the tournament is not set up that way. My point, tickets were already sold. Someone determined that it was 'less hectic" having to move just 1 round (Weds), then moving both opening rounds (Weds and Fri).

Frankly, they should eliminate the district tournaments period, and seed everyone in the regional draw (like Ohio).

Seems highly unusual that they flipped a bracket without moving the entire tournament back a day.

 

This impacts the draw and changes the logistics of the tournament.

 

Dixie, Boone, NCC and Holmes were scheduled to play three games in four days, are now playing three games in five days, whereas CovCath, Newport, Cooper and St. Henry who were scheduled to play three games in six days are now playing three games in in four days.

 

I'm surprised that the latter schools aren't screaming bloody murder, that the advantage gained by luck of the draw has now been nullified and the bottom bracket teams have now gained a perceived (improved) advantage because of the rescheduling.

 

Moving the entire tournament back and having the top bracket play on Friday night and the bottom bracket play on Saturday, would have still given them a slight edge and a few more hours rest. This way the bottom bracket teams have been awarded a free 24hours that they didn't have when the pills rolled out of the bottle, and the upper bracket teams have been disadvantaged by the move.

Real simple...Friday night is the 'prime time draw". Look at the brackets and remember tickets were already being sold. What 4 teams will draw the largest crowd? Cov. Cath., Newport, St. Henry and Cooper OR Dixie, Boone Co., Holmes or NewCath? Common sense - the bottom bracket. So instead of the top bracket playing 3 games in 6 days (as orginally schedule), they now play 3 games in 4 days. Remember, both brackets play Monday and Tuesday (that's all that matters IMO).
