  1. It was definitely a sloppy game but I found it rather enjoyable. Definitely a lot of emotion involved in the game. SK didn't play particularly good or hard in the first half which showed up on the scoreboard. Niece tried to do a little too much in the first half but played in a much better flow the second half. Scott didn't maintain their first half emotion in the second half and SK out-scrapped them; especially Buckner coming up with loose balls and looking to score.

Both teams are loaded with young talent and will be fun to watch for the next several years. How much fun would it be to see them match up in a post season tourney state game.

As far as officiating goes; if you haven't seen an 8th Region game, you would probably find it hard to understand why SK fans complain so frequently. The officials are not nearly as good as what the 9th offers. The 8th used to have a few good ones but they have either moved on to other regions or are doing KIAC games etc. It simply is not good but that's the way it is.

Wow if the 9th is the gold standard of officiating that bar is not set very high!!!!!

  2. My opinion is that no region has a style that all officials stick to.

The 9th has officials who do not call the game in the same manner. Some "let 'em play" while others are call it "tight."

    So IMO it's a myth.

Newbie to following the 9th, do the officials work in teams? My overall impressions is that they call a different game than the officials in the 10th. They don't seem to be as consistent from game to game. They also seem to favor the traditional power schools in the region when calling games, this is based on games I've seen in person this year.

  3. For those that never got to see Grigsby play. Here is a link from a special done in 1975 on Grigsby and the McDowell Daredevils. Old video, but still decent quality with much commentary. She would have likely scored 6-7K if she had played 6 years in my opinion.

    Video link:

Grigsby also played before the 3 point line was adopted. Her numbers are incredible for the amount of time she played at the varsity level.

  4. I am sure that both girls are very good, but I should say upfront, I have been a big fan of Maddie for sometime now and I saw her play this year vs Holmes. Maddie's quickness and speed is very impressive. Against probably one of the fastest teams in the state, she continually kept herself in front of the girls defensively and handled the ball excellently. Her dribbling is pretty unbelievable actually. According to Maxpreps, Maddie has 3 blocks this year. She had a great block against Holmes (called a foul, but was not in my opinion). She can really get high. Her athleticism stands out, even against Holmes. To think there's another 8th grader with her speed seems unlikely.

So, I looked up Kennedy Igo on Maxpreps and Hudl. It's all I have to go on, but it had some video highlights. Maddie is undoubtably faster and quicker. Maddie is listed as 5'8", I couldn't find a height listed for Igo, but from the video she seems about the same.

So is Igo faster/quicker? - no way. Bigger? - maybe, but barely. Stronger? - probably (Maddie is pretty skinny).

"Looks" from D1 schools can mean lots of things. So I'm unsure what/how D1 schools have contacted Igo. But I do know that WKU coaches called Maddie this summer and had her come visit the school and meet the coaches. To just show up at a UK camp and have a coach talk to you...is that really a "look"? It's certainly possible that OSU and UK coaches themselves have actually called Igo, I do not know. Just wondering what exactly that means?

Comparing stats would never work as Budman mentioned. Maddie starts on a team with 6-7 talented seniors and is a legitimate top 20 state ranked (Maxpreps) team. Her job is not to score but run the point well. Igo plays for a team that's 2-4 with losses to Woodford County (1-3) and Madison Southern (3-3) and has 2 other 8th graders, 3 freshman and 3 sophomores on the varsity roster. And from what I've read, the offense runs thru Igo.

To be clear, Kennedy Igo is surely a great player and as already mentioned one of the best 2020 girls in KY. Though, to dismiss Maddie as behind Igo, or not yet to her level, I believe is a mistake and incorrect. Maybe they are close to equal, I don't know. But I would agree with the Paul Biancardi's (ESPN national recruiting director) analysis of Maddie in his tweet, "Attention women's basketball programs: Maddie Scherr has skill and IQ that is off the charts for her grade".

I have seen both girls work out and having watched both in person. IMO Igo is bigger, stronger, if they played 1 on 1 I believe Igo wins head to head. Now they both do different things for their current teams and we are talking about 8th graders who are both awesome players with lots of potential. If the question is today who is better head to head 1 on 1 it's Igo.

  5. I haven't seen Ryle this year yet. Saw Ryles 8th grader last year. How does she compare to Kennedy Igo, the 8th grader from Montgomery County? Do they play together in AAU? Have seen Igo play, she's a good player (especially in her district/on her team), entire offense seems to run through her already.

Igo is bigger stronger faster (2015/2016). Ryles 8th grader is a really good player but not the same physically. Igo is already getting D1 looks I think Ryles is a couple years away from her's ( but she will get them ).

  6. Does Conner not make very many threes per game? 7 doesn't seem like a lot. I thought coach Stamm liked to shoot the the three. I think it's a big part of their game.

And I'm surprised cc only hit two. Was it Conner's swarming defense that kept the threes down.

No - CC is not shooting it well from behind the arch. The confidence does not seem to be there like last year as their shooters are passing up looks that they would have taken last year.

  7. I like the way Ryle is playing so far this year, this team has never really lived up to it's potential in the past. This year they seem to be playing to their talent. I hope this is a great game looking forward to seeing it.

    Ryle advantage Senior Leadership,Size

    Holmes advantage Athleticism

    Ryle weakness.................................................

    Holmes weakness ............................................

Just keeping with the theme on this thread, wouldn't want to upset any players before tonight's game..

  8. Won't speak to the character. I'm referring to his strategy, planning and adjustments. Sure sounds like he made the right "in game" adjustments in this game. I wasn't there, so I'm going off the game results and other game results.

NDA was playing a really solid game executing what appeared to be a sound game plan. The "T" was unfortunate at such a critical time in the game. NDA fought through it though tied the game on a nice out of bounds play hitting a big 3 then Klye K. for CC made a huge shot from the short corner for the win with 2 seconds left.

  9. CC offensive relies on the 3 to open up the passing lanes and back door cuts. NDA did a fantastic job of playing pack line defense inside out and dared CC to shoot the 3. Because of CC success last year defenses are going to game plan around TC,TJ so the open looks they saw last year are not so wide open this year. They don't look the same in the eyes either, shooting less than 20% will shake your confidence and for a shooter confidence is a big deal. Hard fought game Jenna Martin can flat out play no lack of confidence with her give her some space and she is knocking down that 3.

  10. So are you saying that it would be okay for, let's say Beechwood, to invite 8th graders from Turkeyfoot, Twenhofel, Ockerman and Camp Ernst to practice at Beechwood with their freshman?

Beechwood doesn't have a freshman team. If anyone has a line on some girls I'm sure Coach Houston would take their call... ;) maybe some of the girls that are being displaced at HC would be interested..

  11. I saw the rare double foul called tonight at this game. Why is it rare?? Charge and block called on the same play by the officials. Then the officials gave the ball back to the offensive team who did not have the possession arrow. Pretty much sums up the ugly team basketball played tonight, interrupted by some great individual performances..

    Clephane - Scott
