  1. That is the problem it shouldn't come with the territory. However in the social media world we live in today and internet. People feel like it gives them the power to say whatever they want. Hence why more and more people don't coach anymore. People seem to forget these coaches people like to say are idiots, don't know what they are doing, etc. Also have family, they also have family who have to read that about their dads. They have family in the stands who have to hear people who think they have the right to tell high school coaches they are horrible, acting like they are getting paid millions like professional coaches. People behind the key board think they have the right to criticize and say whatever they want without any fear of anything happening to them. That they can attack coaches who also work 8 to 10 hour days at their normal jobs, before spending another 3 hours on the practice field, then film at home, while trying to find anytime to spend if any at all with their own family. But yeah your right people think that should come with the territory and that line of thinking is the problem with things today and why many do stop coaching.

The worst part of it is people behind the keyboard in some sick way think they are helping by saying things like that. Usually those criticisms hurt a program and divide a program more than helps because the players also read it. So if it makes them also doubt their coaches when daddy is saying how bad a coach is. How can you expect a kid to truly sell out and buy end. You can't, but yet people think it is their right to say things like it will help and coaches should just deal with it because as you say it comes with the territory.

    Amen! Perfectly said

  2. From an outsider's perspective, Highlands' best teams under Mueller always seemed to have at least one guy that could make things happen offensively against anyone, a player that commanded the attention of opposing defenses every week - Frisk, Lorenzen, Smith, Hamblen, Guidugli, Collinsworth, Towles, and Hoge immediately come to mind. Let's say those players were "tens". I don't think Weinrich has had any players of that caliber taking snaps, hand-offs, or catching balls since he's been calling the shots. Additionally, those "tens" had really strong supporting casts. When I look at the Birds now, I don't see those complimentary "eights" that they always seemed to have under Dale.

As far back as I can remember, Highlands has been the fittest team on the field in seemingly 99% of the games they've played. It doesn't look like they're slacking in that area under Weinrich. I'm thinking they're just going through a talent lull.

    Great post. Agree 100%

  3. He played a handful of plays on Friday.

He played only a handful of plays on Monday. What do you want the staff to do? He just came back from an injury not too long ago and needs reps. And your guess about having plenty of backs is wrong, the only sophomore RB is Buten. Mason South, who was a RB is playing all defense. The other RB last night was Boling. I guess me expecting adults to know what they’re talking about before they attack a young man and a staff they should know more. Silly me.

    Amen! Great post!

  4. There honestly wasn't much to say about the game. Was cold, wet and muddy - very difficult to control the ball or keep footing for either team. The kids all played hard and was impressed by the tenacity and grit of players on both teams. Lots of parents and fans there on both sides to support the kids despite the weather. Highlands would have won this one regardless but if the weather conditions had been better it would be easier for some past their prime adults to second guess coaching decisions and cast thinly veiled dispersions against coaches, kids and fans.

    Great post!

    Amen!

  5. It's Freshman ball. If you have the numbers and you can platoon, you should. All about development and getting kids on the field and engaged at that age.

I agree 100% freshman football is all about development and fostering an atmosphere where the kids stay engaged and involved. In many ways a freshman teams true success should be shown when kids are juniors and seniors. IMO

  6. One to assume an onside kick is taking place is absurd. Have you ever seen a team kick the ball or squib the ball when their kicker wasnt very good? I'm sure it is very common on the frosh level.

I can see how one would think this is a possibility. I even thought this might be the case as well. But earlier in the game the kicker was kicking the ball down field very consistently. The kicker was also making extra points with little to no trouble. As we all know, even a bad squib kick is typically going to at least make it to the second level of the return team. These two kicks were directly at the first level of the return team and obviously kicked to not go more than 10 yards. The negative reaction that was easily heard from many of the Ryle fans of the onside kicks was even obvious. Like I said, different teams have different approaches...

On a side note, Ryle does probably have one of the best kickers I have seen at the freshman level this year.

  7. From the games I have seen Ryle has the best team in NKY. As far as, "the not much need to throw it", while it is true there is not much need to throw it if your intent is to win frosh games (Ryle is good enough to never throw a pass and beat everyone in NKY), it is not true if you want to have any measure of success at the varsity level. Developing a QB and a passing game has to start early.

100% correct. An important, if not the most important aspect of Frosh football is about developing players for the varsity level and developing them in the same system so there is a clear and efficient transition. Another important aspect is fostering an environment where players keep a strong interest. As we all know some kids develop at a slower rate than others. A kid that is not as good at the freshman level could develop and grow into a fantastic player at the varsity level. These are two areas where Highlands is doing a great job.

Another approach is to kick onside kicks while up 30 late in the game and use a fraction of its roster.

Both approaches will win you games but I have to believe the first approach is a more sustainable long-term model.

Nice win for Ryle. They have a great freshman team and were the better team last night. Here's to hoping both teams finish the season healthy

  8. It was reposted today. Evidently the English teacher didn't want it..

I’m not sure where all of the “reporting” has been coming from but let me try and bring some facts into the discussion. The quoted post is 100% incorrect.

The job was offered to one candidate. The candidate accepted the position. A hire was made and the new head coach has already been attending winter workouts. The new head coach is Brady Dowling who is a great hire.

Best of luck to the team this year.
