  1. Mason was 12-1 last year and returned MOST starters this year. Mason is a very solid squad. You play the games on the schedule. What sense does it make for NewCath to schedule all these games if they dont win them? They will be 0-4 heading into Lloyd. NewCath is not very good this year from what I have seen and what I have heard from other people connected to NewCath. Don't be so upset that Newport is better this year.

    :-)

  2. 2 years ago they only scrimmaged and Cooper controlled that scrimmage with ease. Now last year NewCath had Cooper on the ropes in the first half. I expect a great game between two pretty even teams. Difference will be Cooper's O putting some long drives together and Cooper's DLine shutting down NCC running attack.

Do you think Cooper will be able to shut down NCC running game. Just read an article about Smith in the paper, seems like he will be a thorn in some teams behinds this yr.

  3. I'm sure your right about that, Ironton always draws a large gate. But that didnt seem to matter with the Ashland game, which would also have been a large gate.

BTW, there was a little sarcasm in my other post.

The obsession over a high school football that wasn't even played is amusing. I'm pretty confident when I say this....Nobody from NCC is afraid to play Ashland. I'm pretty sure I was reading something in the other thread about Ashlands defense being just as good as it was last yr. well if all of our memories serve us correctly, that defense gave up about 40 pts and a loss, why would NCC be afraid. Get over it, move on and focus on Raceland next week.

  4. I've heard Newport has a really good freshman too. Maybe that is who MTGL was talking about?

Rico Hollis is the kid from Newport, not sure if he has been going to open gyms though. He will be a stud, quickest kid I have seen in the 9th region. Needs to develop an outside game but has lock down D. Also Brennan Hall of NCC kid can flat out score played with Steven Pangallo at Holy Trinity.

  5. Tri State Warrior 14u is tops in N Ky, along with Shining Star and Colonels 14u teams:

    David Roberdeaux Holy Cross

    Tanner Craddock Conner

    Ethan Robbins Boone County

    AJ Plitzuweit Dixie

    Kameron Butler Cov Cath

    Luke Thelen Cov Cath

    Nick Pfriem Roger Bacon

    Alec Pfriem (8th grade)

    Nick Thelen (8th grade)

    Jeremiah Snorton St. Bernard

They just won the Louisville Coca Cola Classic 3 weeks ago, lost in the semis of the Kings Island Classic 2 weeks ago.

Not sure how you can say they are on the top without mentioning the Legends. They have probably 3 of the top 10 guards in the region and 3 legit bigs. They have played some of the best competition in the Midwest including meanstreets, the family, Mac Irvin fire, St. Louis prospects and have a 2-2 record against those teams. Also winning a tournament in Pigeon Forge and Indianapolis. You need to check them out as they gear up for nationals.

  6. My take on the 9th Region next year:

Covcath- Underrated talent but will have one of the best duos in the region in Bo Schuh and Cole VonHandorf. CVH really took over at the state tournament and proved that he can be a guy to get you a bucket. Can Covcath be as good from outside without Heppler and Ruthsatz? That will be the biggest question, IMO. Ruthsatz handling the ball and his presence took so much pressure off everyone else. I don't think some realize how smart of a player he was. If he were 6'1, he would be playing D1 basketball somewhere next year. Very good young talent coming up. Great coaching staff. Will miss Schult's presence inside. I'm not sure Will Heppler can give the same contributions next year. Schult was TOUGH! I really like Schumate and what he brings to next year's team. Kid works hard at both ends and his shot is underrated, IMO.

Newcath- Once again, the Breds will have (arguably) the most talented starting 5 in the region led by Pangallo, G Moeves, Weyer, and McDonald. And Once again, their depth will be the biggest question heading in to the season. The Anderson twins, I think, can be nice additions to next year's team along with the younger Moeves as a soph. Still, the Breds will miss the outside shooting of Tanner Moeves and inside presence of Jake Schulte. Schulte really took a lot of pressure off of McDonald inside. It will also be interesting to see how Weyer transitions to the 4 v playing the 3 against smaller defenders. How he matches up with players his own size throughout the season will determine how far Newcath can go. Obviously McDonald will be a match up problem for almost every team because of his size and versatility.

Holmes- Best player in the region in James Bolden. Arguably the best backcourt in the region and one of the best in the state with McClendon along side Beetle. Those two will really cause problems next year. They return a junior class that won state as 8th graders and have lost, I believe, just 5 games at the JV level over the past two years. Andrew Arnold has the potential to be very good for Holmes at the 3. At 6'2, his strength and aggressiveness make him a tough match up for a lot of 3's in this region, He dominated at the JV level. How good Rod Avery, soph Jaiden Green, and Brandon Moore can be will determine how successful Holmes will be. I don't think some realize how good Chames and Hill were this year. Easily two of the top 20 seniors in the NKY-Cincy-Dayton area. Ian Brolley will be a nice option off the bench to run the point. Smart player who shoots the ball well. By midseason, people will know the name Marcus Mullins. Junior to be that has the potential to be very good if he can get the mental aspect of his game right.

I am excited to see how Ravaai Commodore (frosh to be) translates to the varsity level next year. There were JV games this year where he was the best player on the floor as an 8th grader. A lot of potential with him. Next "star" to come through Holmes from what people around NKY have told me.

Dixie- They are the most intriguing team to me. Very deep senior to be class that contains all the pieces to be very good. Solid guard play with Rabe and Schreck. Good 3 man with Nick Niehaus and Drew Moore. One of the better front courts in the region with Hedger and Bolin, who I think at 6'7 can be a lot like Jake Schulte next year defensively with his size, length, and athleticism. The wildcard for the Colonels is Matt Isbel, IMO. Kid is one of the best athletes in the region and can really cause problems at both ends if he gains confidence. Dixie will be a tough match up for teams next year because of how well they will defend. Can they score, though? That will be the big question heading in to next year. When aggressive, Schreck can get a bucket and I think Rabe's shot is very underrated. If given the green light to shoot, I think can be a 12-15 ppg scorer playing off the ball. And obviously Dixie will have one of the best sophomores in the region in Hunter Meyer for added depth.

Cooper- Coach Sully will have a good starting 5 with Hendrix, Sean McNeil, Liechty, Hathorn, and Phillip Hawkins. That group will flat out get after it defensively. Depth will be a question but the Jags had a pretty solid JV group next year and have a good freshman group coming up.

Boone- Mayberry, Stanley, and Stockwell give Coach McQueary a nice trio to center the offense around but after those three, I'm not sure there is enough talent to make Boone a top 5 team. Blake Donovan and DeShawn Pickett, along with Beau Downs, Trevor Thompson, and Aaron Floyd (if he plays) will likely round out the rotation. Interested to see how much playing time the younger Stockwell gets as a junior.

Ryle- Coach McFarland will have to replace a very deep senior class that included their two best player in Will Stuhr and Tanner White. Young talent in the program but I don't know if the Raiders will have a go to scorer on next year's team. Tyrek Owens got better throughout the season and should have a good junior year. Jake Puthoff and Max Lonneman will give the Raiders solid outside threats and I like Puthoff's ability to put the ball on the floor and go to the rim. Biggest question is inside. Junior to be Logan Turner should get some good mins. Ryle won't be a very big team next year. Sophomore to be class is pretty good though which should give DMac some added depth. Interested to see if he uses a 4 guard offense.

I think the region once again comes down to Newcath, Holmes, Dixie, and Covcath next year.

Is Smith for New Cath not playing basketball?
