  1. Yeah switch times that still didn't work! So how is it completely wrong that Beechwood had to forfeit twice in a week because St. Agnes couldn't or wouldn't find times to work. It definitely could of been done if they had wanted it too. Period!

Why couldn't the other tournaments switch their times? Is it all on the director at St. Agnes to accommodate? They tried, it didn't work out with what was available and that's too bad. FWIW, they were able to switch for the 7th grade Beechwood team on multiple occasions so it's not anything against Beechwood.

  2. Beechwood 6th beat Guardian Angel by 11pts tonight in the St. Agnes Tournament. It looks like St.Agnes will not work with Beechwood again! Beechwood 6th is going to have to forfeit their game on Saturday because of the Small School Middle Championship game. They are scheduled to play Bracken Co. at 9:15am at Sharp. The St.Agnes Tournament game with Victory is scheduled for that morning also and they won't switch the time. This is a bunch of garbage if you ask me! If I was Beechwood this would be the last time I played in that tournament.

I just read this post and you are completely wrong about this. They (St. Agnes) did offer to switch the game in conjunction with the 7th grade Beechwood team and had it worked out. The coach chose to forfeit the game because of the quick turnaround time needed to get to Sharp. St. Agnes had no other options due to it being the final weekend of tournament. The guys that run this tournament do a tremendous job and work with all teams involved to accommodate schedules better than anyone else does. Is it their fault that the conflict arose due to weather cancelling the middle school games the weekend before?

  3. Your original comment referred to sky falling if they don't win this year. That simply wouldn't be true.

Understood. However, if they don't win the region this year, I still think it'll be viewed as a huge disappointment. Not saying that's fair, but I do think that's how it will be viewed in the Cov Cath community as a whole. Again, just a personal opinion/observation.

  4. Jaded much.

Nope, just a realist. I think the program and coaching staff are excellent, just believe that if they don't win the region (or more) every year with the expectations of greatness thrust upon them with kids who haven't even played a varsity minute yet, then it'll be the same old cry heard before in football, baseball, and past basketball regimes - how in the world do you lose with all that talent in the building. So then is it the coaches fault (they did win a state championship and I don't expect they'll forget how to coach), unrealistic expectations, or overrated talent?

  5. If what I am hearing about some kids coming in from outside the area next year then yes they will need to have another squad to keep the Park Hills parents happy. I know the current 8th graders pretty well in NKY and if they get Thelen and Coldiron they will be set at the post.

I think they (and others) would love to have two teams however, my understanding is that they are limited by how many games they can play by KHSAA. If you have a 30 game max, each game played by either team counts against the total. They may have to play a 10 game schedule with a "B" squad and 20 game schedule with an "A" squad. Ohio schools field multiple teams without the restrictions.

  6. The four main are Blessed Sacrament, Saint Joes (Cresent Springs), Saint Agnes, and Saint Pius. But a lot of kids come from all over nky. The Boone county catholic schools send a lot to CCH. I'm pretty sure that Saint Pius is the biggest of the four though. But all four have had there fair share of athletes. The 04' team that went to the state semis, I think it was something like four of the five starters were from Saint Agnes. It varies from year to year and from sport to sport where to top players come from. But for basketball I'd say Saint Pius has had to most kids make the team over the past few years. But I could be wrong.

When they introduce the starters before home games I believe they give what parish they're from. Based on memory of the current rosters it breaks down like this - JV - 4 St. Agnes, 3 St. Joe's, 3 St Pius, 2 B.Sac. - Varsity - 5 St. Agnes (Lenhof, Flood, Schuh, Ziegelmeyer, Theobald), 2 St Pius (frosh - Ruthsatz, Mayer), 3 St. Joe's (Shumate, Massie ?, Romes) , 2 B.Sac (CVH, Heppler) Sweeney & Bessler ?. I'm sure some of those are wrong and I missed some kids from outside the main 4 feeder schools.

  7. I never got to watch Mike Fessler play (he was in '62), but he put up 50 points against Dixie Heights and had the highest scoring average for an individual season with 25.4. It's difficult to leave a guy like that off the list.

Other than that, I'd take Corey Grace ('97?). He was a beast and ended up playing for Thomas More. He went down to Kentucky to attempt to walk-on, but they told him that there were no more spots on the roster. Somebody by the name of Saul Smith took the last one.

It's difficult to leave Andy & Kevin Listerman off the list, but I think there are much more talented players. I'd probably take Nestheide ('04) & Purdon ('01)over them, but that's just my opinion.

Also, Dan Tieman deserves a spot. Anybody who plays behind the Big O has a legit reason for riding the pine. :D

So that leaves me with this:

    Dick Maile

    Roger Tieman

    Randy Noll

    Joe Voskuhl

    Joe Fritz

    Corey Grace

    Matt Nestheide

    Steve Purdon

    Dan Tieman

    Andy Listerman

Not sure how Corey Grace is getting mentioned here, he's not even in the conversation of all time greats. Trust me, Don Turney would've "outbeasted" him in high school, college (Marshall), and as a late round pick in the NBA (No, I'm not related - just saw both of them play). Dan Tieman would probably tell you that Kevin Listerman would make this list over Netheide and Purdon on any day of the week. Other than that, pretty solid list.

  8. In the immortal words of Bum Phillips, I suspect Coach Mueller could take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n. From a former Colonel, I wish you nothing but the best in retirement, it is well deserved. Respect is earned, not given and I'm certain that even the most ardent Colonel fans would say you've earned their respect. Congrats on a great career !

  9. What does 1963 and 2002 have to do with the point?

I asked the question about recent failures - how do we assess responsibility? All on the Maile/Isler/Darner/Nutinni players? Is that who we're placing blame on? Or does the staff share in the blame?

Do we agree that a team with 2 high D1 players who ended up being drafted in the first 10 rounds who had some really talented teammates should win a region that hasn't won the state title other than in 1963 adn 2002? It's not exactly Murderer's Row on an annual basis.

Many people hear annually how CovCath has the best talent yet there is not much to show for it in the last 8 years. That seems like the definition of overhyped.

I agree that CCH seems to have the annual hype around its program but I question who the source of the hype is. I'm sure there are years when the coaching staff thinks they have the talent to win district, region, or state but I'm betting that's not shared outside the lockerroom. The majority of hype comes from the two worst sources in the history of sports - parents and individual players.

As for the losses in regional games, I'm sure that you can find blame or fault on all levels of the team. Coaching decision, player errors, mental mistakes all contribute. I do think that sometimes after a loss in a one and out format too many times we look for reasons why the losing team didn't win - maybe it's simply because for that game the winning team was better. That shouldn't be an indictment of a programs success or failure especially when that program has achieved a level of sustained success such as Cov Cath.

I know the Cov Cath faithful want to find fault with Krumps and use him as the reason for going a whole 8 years without a regional and you may be right, but for a different reason. Perhaps in setting the standard of success (along with Max) over such an extended time, he has raised the bar to which other teams strive to achieve. In doing so, other coaches (many of whom played for him) have established programs that are his equal.

Make no mistake, he will win another region title (or 2) as he hasn't forgotten how to coach. I for one will congratulate him when he does as it will be well deserved

  10. Perhaps TOG can answer that question. I'm not sure that CCH bunts nearly as much as their reputation suggest. I think it's based on their competition and those that aren't successful see many more attempts than those that defend it well. I don't see many games, but I suspect that their reputation for bunting often times plays into their favor with the positioning and anticipation of the opponent's defense.

  11. I heard Rudy Guiliani talking about what Republicans need to do going forward in order to get in touch with the changing demographics in our country and I have to say it made sense. Republicans can be fiscally conservative and conservative in their views towards defense (i.e. spend $$ on the military) but when it comes to social issues such as gay marriage and abortion, they need to be Libertarian. If the Republican battle cry is truly less government intrusion on the federal level, then they need to let states decide these issues. A candidate can endorse that their view of marriage is between a man and a woman and that their pro-life while at the same time endorsing that each of these social issues is up to the electorate of individual states. If Republicans can adopt this approach as their platform, they can possibly garner enough votes from those demographic groups that they currently alienate on a large scale. You can't win on hard line stances with social issues while at the same time saying we need limited government!

  12. Who really cares? As someone said in an earlier post, the kid and his family will likely rethink this decision repeatedly. Why all the fuss about a 13 or 14 year kid who attended an open house? Don't know the kid, but he must be a pretty decent player to have played freshmen ball as a 7th grader. But if history has taught us anything, there have been a ton of kids who were studs at this age and then get caught physically by others. Historically, NKY is not exactly a hotbed of D-1 talent in any sport and too often we get caught up in projecting how good these kids are. If he plays for his middle school, freshman, jv, or just AAU - who cares but that kid, his family, and the coaches. Just let him be a kid while he can without all the hype and expectations - his commitment, talent, and work ethic will lead him where he's meant to be.
