  1. Technology overall has improved so much that it has become dangerous in some cases of misplayed balls. It has and will always be an inherent danger of the sport, but why would we not use technology to protect from serious injury as well?

I have had two players, both excellent defenders, take balls to the face - one broke an orbital socket and one had several teeth knocked out. Less we forget how important vanity still is to teenage girls.

    Check out this video:

I was at this game in Tampa sitting right behind first base dugout when it happened - it sounded like someone dropped a watermelon off the 10th floor of the hotel into the parking lot. Gruesome and very similar to the Aroldis Chapman comebacker a few years ago.

Accidents and injuries will continue to happen and be part of the game. And its the right of each player and/or parent to decide whether or not to wear a facemask. But if you are not wearing one because of what a college coach or others may think, then you need to re-evaluate your decision making process. I am glad the UK pitcher who started to where a facemask several years ago broke the macho mold of thinking and brought this issue to the forefront.

Science and technology are available and can make the game safer. We have vaccinations available to protect our daughters (and sons) - polio, TB, HPV, etc. As parents, why would we ever choose to take on inherent risks that can be prevented?

But again, to each their own.

  2. Just frustrating when a coach decides to cancel a game hours before the match. If Boone were given more notice they could have picked up another game. The coach said it was the only time Ludlow could play them. After talking with a Ludlow parent I don't believe this to be true.

The game was canceled on Tuesday, a day prior. District seeding games had to be played by yesterday - think ADs called this one to get results and District tournament schedule out.

VMA was to play Boone on Wednesday, Ludlow on Thursday and Calvary on Friday - 6 games in 8 days because of the rainouts, 11 in the last 18. And 2 more games were to be made up but no refs were available. Life happens.

I wish they would have played Boone prior to districts - it would definitely help prepare them for Dixie and St. Henry again.

And yes, Ludlow played well. Crawford and Warndorf are good athletes. Congrats to them.

  3. No offense taken...and that is the misconception...Villa does not grow money trees on that beautiful campus. The overall money is balanced between academics and all other extracurriculars including athletics. Remember that the softball, baseball and soccer fields on campus are also open to the public and used by around 2,800 children year round. The Sisters at St. Wahlberg Monastery are ultimately the ones to thank for such a nice complex, but not state of the art.

Didn't mean to offend but just speaking the truth. By the way my girls go to a private school so all those taxpayer facilities you talk about aren't at our school. I along with the other parents have to pay for everything we get. I sure there is plenty of money to go around at Villa if they wanted to support the soccer program. I don't know from personal experience but just from what I've heard.
  4. Thankfully the ADs were making this decision and not you. Not everyone has the luxury of taxpayer facilities. The field and setting meet all the KHSAA requirements and they have as much right to host a district every four years in any sport as the other schools.

This is why they should never host the districts. I would think Villa would have the advantage today. They can get there right after school and start practicing PK's if they want and the goalie will have plenty of time to see some PK's. Bad decision to let them host.
  5. It was a great game to watch. The refs got a lot right and some wrong for both teams - definitely let them play. Villa goalie, Abby Hengge, played exceptional for not playing goalie this year while subbing tonight for both goalies - one sick and one recovering from surgery. She did a great job tonight. I would love to see it played out and not rely on PKs.
