Tell me all the scouts that were at Garrard games when he was there? If you are college coach why would you go watch 1 player or go watch 8 players that are competing at a high level. Then those college programs keep going back to the same schools because they know they will have talent.

Well before Spencer, they only allowed 1 coach in the building. Did not have in school weightlifting. Had terrible facilities. Do you want me to keep going on? They finally started to invest in the program.

FWIW, Q had an offer from EKU (as a freshman) before leaving Garrard.  They also sent another kid to EKU on scholarship this year.

Your entire second paragraph is just false.

So about the choice when they enrolled originally. What if the law stated you got one job choice out of high school and had to keep it forever regardless of future opportunities? You would say that’s absurd. If I have a better opportunity then I should be able to take it. Why should academics and sports be any different?

Academics shouldn't be different.  If a family want their kid to transfer for academic purposes, they should - and already can, to some degree.

Sports, however, are different.  Are sports a right or a privilege?  If they are a right, then there should be no strings attached (grades, drug testing, etc.). If they are a privilege (as they are treated under current rules), then I see no problem with having to sit a year if you transfer.  If the reasons for the move are not athletic in nature, then what is the problem with waiting?

There are only 10-15 “really good jobs” in the state. The rest are what you make of them. What I qualify a “good job is”

    1) good administration

    2) history of winning

    3) solid competitive pay

    4) organization of youth and middle school programs.

    5) access to solid players, and a history of players

    6) good facilities, weight room, or indoor facility, also the ability to use them and have priority in use of them.

If you have 4 of the 6 you have a pretty good job.  Just my .02 .

This is a really good point...  The places that have all 6 are elite in the state of Kentucky.  But, I will say this - many programs on the "list" didn't have those things before - they gained them over time.  I agree with your premise thought, you can overcome not having a couple of things on the list, but you better be building them, if you want to be a top-notch program.

As far as I'm told, this job search is over. Josh Jaggers is the hire, just waiting on the formality.

I think this was handled as poorly as possible. I hate it for the kids and for the two coaches who had to go through this process as things were dealt with secretly. Guys, it's a formality and a courtesy to interview assistant coaches who apply for a position. Rogers and Cooper didn't have to get the job, that's fine. But to not interview those two men is just poor leadership. This entire situation has not set well with me and will not with the people I've spoken with, but that's business.

I wish the best of luck to Lincoln and hope they have success this season! It's a traditional place and the progress of the last 4 seasons needs to continue to grow. I wish the best for Jaggers as well!

    I'm just skeptical.

Unfortunately, this seems to be indicative of the way more & more administrations handle the hiring process.  An administrator has the right (and duty) to hire the coach they want, and with whom they are comfortable.  However, it seems that if a coach on the current staff applies for a job, they should get the courtesy of an interview (especially if they are coordinator level). At the very least, a conversation would seem appropriate.

As fewer administrators are former coaches, maybe they underestimate the value of the interview process for coaches in their career development.  They get to see how the process goes, what questions are asked, what qualities are valued by admin, etc.  Also, even if you already know who you want, it is possible someone else is really impressive... and if another principal you know is looking for a coach, it might lead to a conversations about the guy you interviewed, opening another opportunity for him.

I will say this, if Josh Jaggers is the guy, he is a solid hire.  He is a good coach, and will do well at Lincoln, IMO.

I would be surprised if Jaggers takes this job. It seems that he applies for every job in the area and never takes them. He probably applied for the Mercer job as well.

It seems that the kids are the ones being affected by this the most which is a great look. I am glad they could continue to lift and workout in this transition.

I think there is a pretty wide gulf between the jobs that people connect to Josh and those he actually applies for.  Not saying that is the case here, but he doesn't apply or go after a lot of the jobs people connect him to.

Boyle had less enrollment than Paducah who played in the 3A title game.

4A is an easier path to the title than 3A?? Johnson Central and Boyle would have likely clocked every team in the playoffs if they had played 3A this past year.

Not according to the document from the last alignment.  They were close, but Boyle had a higher male enrollment.  The latest numbers that I can find show that Boyle's enrollment has grown since, and PT's has declined (to be fair, those are overall numbers, not male enrollment).

Of course none of this is certain.  I could wind up being wrong, but just putting forward my best guess.

As far as relative strength of the classes - you are right that Boyle & Johnson Central were probably a lot better than anyone in 3A this year.  I don't think that really addresses the issue of which is the toughest path.  Reasonable people can disagree.

I have already hijacked the thread enough, but my whole point to begin with was that the idea that one job is better/worse based upon another school's alignment is flawed logic.

    Explain.

A team cannot "drop down" by choice, unless they are the smallest team in a class & someone else chooses to "move up."  Boyle's enrollment numbers have increased since the last alignment, so they will probably be in 4A, proper, in the new alignment (as they were already one of the largest 3A schools).  Lexington Catholic is not far behind them.  I would still argue that 4A is an easier path to the title, so they could choose to continue to play up, even if they are 3A.  Now, it is entirely possible that they split - the rivalry seems to have lost some heat.

All this could wind up being wrong, because the enrollment numbers will be skewed because of COVID.  Beyond that we don't "know" what the realignment will look like.  In the area, we can know that Garrard, Mercer, & Casey will remain 3A, Danville will still be 2A, and Lincoln will still be 4A.  The question marks for this area are Rockcastle & Boyle.

With this job now open who are the front runners for this job?   In less than 24 hours I have heard the names of:

-Current Mercer County defensive coordinator William Harris

    -Dennis Johnson

    -Clay Clevenger

    -Josh Jaggers

    -Brian Rowland

Coach Buchanan left Mercer County in great shape.  Should be a great job for whomever ends up with it.

I know that Coach Rowland has moved into administration.  I would assume Coach Harris will apply.  Seems like Clevenger's & Jaggers' names have come up for every coaching vacancy in the area.

I remember when Hodge was the middle school Coach For Garrard, he was there for one year and claimed a salt River conference title, if I’m not mistaken the only time Garrard won the middle school title, of course he had some good kids, but I think that speaks to volume of what kind of coach he is, I’ve always thought he would be a good choice, he did very well at bourbon in my opinion, not sure if he would be interested or not, very intriguing to say the least, whoever it is, I hope it’s someone who decides to stay and change the culture of the program from top to bottom, because I really think that’s what needs to be done, a lot of folks may use MQ and GC as a stepping stone to a bigger job, which is not what they need.

That was maybe 2001? Garrard was not in the Salt River at the time - they were in another conference.  They had a runner-up in the same conference in maybe 2004 or 5.  They won the Salt River in 2008 & had a runner up in 2011.  I I think maybe they have won their new conference once.

All KHSAA rules are still in place. No transfers for athletic reasons. My understanding, the answer to your question is no.

An interesting question to ask would be this:  If I want my child to repeat his grade, and my current district will not let him, is it a transfer for "athletic reasons?"  Even if an athlete plays a sport at the new school, "the rules" seems to make the "for athletic reasons" argument much weaker.

They won't be able to do that, It's a repeat year so this years classes will not count and they will have to repeat all required classes the full year in order to graduate. I'm sure each district will have to come up with a set of rules to iron all of it out though.

This is not my understanding, having read the law.  It is broad, but the way I read it, they can keep credits, but can choose to repeat classes.  My guess is elective-type credits will remain that same & students will primarily repeat core classes (Math, Science, English, & Social Studies) while getting to option to take more electives and CTE classes.

This could be a boon to some of our vocational/CTE students to gain more opportunities for certifications, as well as for elementary students to reinforce their learning in the basics.

“Someday, there will be an issue related to the football playoffs that is unanimously received by all of those involved with the game at our level. But that day likely isn’t today and like most times, the Board is left to sort through a wide variety of thoughts and opinions and make the decisions that they think are best after balancing all perspectives,” said Tackett. “It is certainly my hope from my position, that our membership and the public will give open-minded support to the adopted changes throughout this next alignment period.”

This is true, no system will please EVERYONE... but, 90% of coaches who participated voted AGAINST playing within the district. That isn't everyone, but 9 or 10 coaches agreeing on something should be listened to. They did not have "wide variety of thoughts and opinions." This is just the usual, disingenuous deflection from KHSAA.
