  1. Southwestern is actually slightly higher rated Academically, but both are quality schools.

If they are claiming Academics as the reason for the move, I'd be curious what PC offers that SW doesn't. I do remember seeing a big green house at Pulaski and I don't recall seeing one at Southwestern, maybe these boys just have green thumbs :lol2:

Seriously everyone knows this is a move for basketball. I think there was so much turmoil at SW these kids may have just wanted a fresh start...even though there was a new coach hired for SW after Coach Wright resigned.

Wrong. For the 2014-2015 school year, the state of Kentucky ranks schools according to test scores, and other data. Pulaski County ranked 28th. Southwestern was 57th.

  2. Foley has been an assistant before on the High School Level. He has actually turned down several assistant and coordinator positions at the high school level to build up the Pulaski Middle School program into what it is today.

Foley has done a good job at Northern Middle School. But to be fair, the program was very solid prior to him going there. Johnny Cain had great teams in the early 2000s, (see Cole Draughn, etc) and Joey Warren also had great teams in the mid 2000s, before he moved up to the Pulaski County High School Staff. If the Middle School Association was in existence then, (and the middle school state championship tournament was in place) Northern would have won a few more of those titles back in those days.

    Senioritis strikes.

Pulaski was the kid who had a 3.8 GPA and knew they would never be Valedictorian, but had a high ACT score their Junior year and a full academic scholarship locked up so their Senior Year they just decided to have fun and kind of underachieved.

Not really a tough schedule... and for each statement win there was an equal Half-Hearted performance. People expected more of them, but they still came to the stage with plenty of honors and got applause.

  4. He was promoted from defensive coordinator position. Last year was his first year at the school, coming over from Barren County. He played at Barren County in high school and walked on at WKU, later earning a scholarship.

This was what I expected from the first moment I heard of the coaching change. I'm far more interested in what the staff will look like. That may be a much larger factor in what the Dragons look like next year. Still a lot of talent in the senior class, but some leaner years on the horizon.

Stephens transferd to Pulaski County and played there his junior and senior years, earning All-State honors both times as a DB.

  5. I may be wrong but I think that Ray correl bowl doesn't include the county schools.

Correct. Somerset refused to continue to play Pulaski County and Southwestern on a home-and-home basis each season. Therefore, the both schools pulled out of the Correll Bowl. The "Don Marshall Bowl" is now week 0. Here is the next two years I think:

    2015 - Pulaski v. Jeffersonville, Indiana (6pm)

Southwestern v. Harlan Co. (Bowl is at Southwestern High in 2015)

    2016 - Southwestern v. Jeffersonville, Indiana (6pm)

Pulaski v. Harlan Co. (Bowl is at Pulaski in 2016)

This is Friday night of week 0. I have heard that the Correll Bowl will now be a single game. Somerset v. Caverna.

  6. Pulaski County has had so many it is hard to remember them all. Here are a few from the past:

2013 - Against Damian Harris and Madison Southern in the Region Championship Game, Pulaski trailed by 10 in the 3rd quarter, and rallied to win 32-28 in the muddiest game I have ever seen.

    - Also last year - Pulaski trailed Anderson County in the Semi-State Final Round of the Playoffs, 20-10 with 4 minutes to go. On the road. QB Riley Hall hit Christian Coots for a long TD pass to make it 20-17. Anderson County fumbled on their possession, and PC drove 60 yards to win in the final minute on a TD pass from Hall to Jake Johnson. The highlight of the drive was a scramble and run by QB Riley Hall on 4th and 13!

2012 - Also against Madison Southern on the road, Pulaski trailed by 2 TDs with 4 minutes to go. QB Riley Hall threw a TD to Tyler Goins. Then they held Harris and Southern 3 and out. Goins scored on a 38 yard run with less than a minute to win 37-36.

    - Also earlier that season, PC trailed 21-0 at North Laurel in the 3rd Quarter, and rallied to win 28-21.

2010 - PC trailed arch-rival Southwestern 14-0 in the third. Rallied to win 21-14.

2009 - Pulaski was behind Whitley County in the second round of the playoffs, by 2 TDs. They scored with 5 minutes to go, on-sides kicked and got it, and tied the game up with about a minute and a half. Then intercepted a Whitley pass on the 10. Went 90 yards in less than a minute and won 40-34.

    - Same year. Trailed at Rockcastle 41-27 in the 4th quarter. Scored 3 TDs in 5 minutes to win. The last one with 20 seconds or so to go. Final 47-41.

2008 - Trailed Ricky Bowling and South Laurel by 2 TDs with 4 minutes to go. Drove and scored, on-sides kicked and got it, and scored again with less than a minute to tie. Won in overtime.

    - Same year. Trailed Knox Central 21-0 early. Rallied to tie in the 3rd. Knox went ahead 28-21. Pulaski drove 80 yards in a minute and a half to score, went for two and won. 29-28.

2007 - Pulaski was a 21 point underdog to Somerset. Game was tied at 43 with 4 minutes to go. Had a lightning delay. PC scored 3 TDs in the last 4 minutes to win going away.

All the way back to 2003, my favorite - PC trailed Louisville Waggener 61-41 with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter of a second round playoff game at Waggener in the rain. Pulaski scored 41 points in a quarter and a half (yes you read that right) to win 82-68. I think it is still the highest scoring game in KY high school history.

Come to Pulaski and see the Maroons play. You won't be disappointed.

    13. North Laurel at Perry County Central

    14. Montgomery County at #9 Conner

    15. Christian County vs. Barren County

In the pre-season, you said you had been "burned" by Pulaski too many times to put them in the top ten. Even though they have finished in the top ten in 07,08,09,10,12. Now you have them ranked third????

  8. 1. Bowling Green vs. Blackman (TN)

    2. John Hardin at 4A Western

    3. Anderson County at 4A #5 Collins

    4. Pulaski County -- OPEN

    5. Franklin County -- OPEN

    6. Conner at 4A #6 Covington Catholic (11/2)

    7. Madison Southern -- OPEN

    8. Harlan County at 3A #7 Bell County

    9. South Oldham vs. Bullitt Central

    10. Warren Central at 4A #1 Highlands

Wait a minute! You have Pulaski County ranked in the top 10? In the pre-season you said you wouldn't rank Pulaski in the top 10. Said you had been "burned" by them too many times. You said their past top 10 finishes meant nothing. What has changed?

  9. First round of the playoffs are generally bye weeks for the teams that are good. Don't tell me they won a few first round games and act like that means something. If your the number one seed in your district, your playing the worst team from the other district. If your 8-2 and losing in the first or second round, your probably not a good team. I think that's what Ram is saying.

8-2, second round of the playoffs sounds pretty good to me! How many teams out there would like to do that? And, If you are finishing the season in the "final 8," that puts you in the top 10.

  10. I've been on the Pulaski bandwagon before and they have burned me every time. They will have to prove something first.

"Burned?" Really? Pulaski County has finished the season in the top ten in the state (Class 5A) five of the last six years. (2007,2008,2009,2010,2012). I guess you picked them in 2011.

  11. He has coach and played at Union, and coached Somerset. He went to Corbin graduated in 97 I beleive. As a former LC player and fan, Coach Russell has my full support, he is a class act, and I do think he is right choice at this time.

Phil Russell did not coach at Somerset. He coached at Pulaski County High in 2003-2005. under John Hines. He then went to East Jessamine(under Coach Bowlin), and he also coached at Montgomery County (under Coach Gooch), before going to Union College.

  12. I am told by a good source that the "short list" includes:

Jeff Hester - Boyle County Defensive Coordinator

John Hines - Pulaski County Head Coach

David Buchanan - Mason County Head Coach.

I also was told that Hester decided against it, (don't know if the job was offered or not), and Buchanan wasn't interested. Haven't heard anything about Hines.

  13. The original post was start or contribute. I think Sam Letton will contribute in some role. He was on the FBU Tournament that won 3 games to go to San Antonio. Almost all the kids on that team could be contributing to their high school teams in the fall of 2012.

Pulaski County had two guys on that same team that went to San Antonio. (PC's middle school, Northern, has been middle school state champs in the big school division the last two years.) Both of these guys will contribute and so will others from that team.

    Mason Helton - LB

    Riley Hall - QB

    Jesse Whitaker - RB

    Jake Roberts - OL

    Dylan Perkins - NT

  14. Pulaski has had an impressive decade under Hines. I am looking for them to return to the "final 4" in Class 5A soon, and may just go to Bowling Green in the near future.

The last decade at Pulaski County:

2001 - 5-6 (Lost in first round of playoffs)

2002 - 7-5 (Lost in second round of playoffs to eventual state champion Boyle County)

2003 - 11-2 (Lost to eventual State Champion Boyle Co. in District Title Game, and in Region Title Game)

2004 - 7-4 (Lost in first round of playoffs)

    2005 - 2-8

2006 - 2-9 (Lost in first round of playoffs)

2007 - 10-2 (Lost to Lincoln County both times. Lincoln was Regional Champ, lost to Highlands)

2008 - 8-4 (Lost to Whitley County in round two. Whitley won region and lost to Highlands)

2009 - 10-4 (Started 0-2 and rebounded to win the District Title, and Region Title. Lost to Highlands in round 4)

2010 - 11-2 (Lost to Henry Clay in double OT, and lost the Region Title game at Harlan County. Beat Harlan Co. earlier in the season. Won second straight District Crown)

Not a bad decade for a team that was the "worst football" school in the state in 1993, 1994.
