  1. He had the same kind of night shooting against Holmes as well. The kid can flat fill it up. Can you imagine what his PPG would be if Jackson and Euton weren't on the team to balance out the scoring? He'd average every bit of 30 ppg IMO.

He is a HECK of a player, but I don't know if he would average more without Euton and Jackson. I think the combination of players opens up possibilities for each one of them. Sometimes being the "MAN" is harder than being one of the "MEN". Just a thought. He is a great player though.

  2. This is just one man's opinion. I think its a combination of things.

    Talent pool

    coaching "style"

Politics surrounding Ashland Basketball. There are a lot of "factors" surrounding the program that do more harm than good.

I think Coach Biggs is a very good coach with a great understanding of the game. A lot of "factors" have hindered him from applying his coaching skills to the fullest. Even with that said he IS a VERY GOOD coach.

As I said that's just my opinion. Ashland has a great history but a lot of times people forget it's not the sixties anymore when Ashland was a state powerhouse. As the Ashland area has grown outward so have the schooling options for young students. This has spread out the talent throughout the area surrounding Ashland.

  3. OK, the top 5 coaches then. Just a point of interest, for me.

    In no particular order.......

    Zornes -- Boyd Co.

    Breeden -- Ashland

Hop Brown -- West Carter ( girls or not he could coach )

    Baker Sr. -- East Carter

    Tim Moore -- Rowan Co. ( late 80's )

I base this purely on x's and o's and the ability to motivate youth, not number of wins or how many years they spent on the bench.

IF it were based on number of wins or how many years they spent on the bench then unfortuneatly Marv would have to be included.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who would rank them totally different and I respect that.:thumb:

  4. Maybe the thread should have been titled "Top five coaches in 16th Region with VARSITY HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE"...............................................................................................................................................................................................................But it WASN'T.

Should a first year coach be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. NO I agree. But the thread implied only "Top 5 coaches" right NOW. Once again I may be mistaken. I understand your philosophy and agree with it completely when it comes to "coaches history". If we were ranking top 16th region coaches over the last 25 years then my TOP five would look totally different.

  5. I always find it comical when someone starts these threads asking, "who is the best coach to walk the earth" or what ever, and people name first year coaches. That is like naming the MLB All-Stars after the first game of the year. Or picking the MVP of a team after the first practice.

If someone thinks a first year coach is a great coach, that is fine, and he may be, but how can you say that he is one of the top coaches in the region? I don't get it.

Cooksey would have to be at the top, because he has done more with less for a long time. He has proven that he can truly coach basketball.

Mr. Ram being on the varsity bench for your first year doesn't mean your a "first" year coach. Please do your homework and look into a coach's whole resume, then give an opinion. The thread gave NO stipulation on what the rules were for rating these coaches. A coach is a coach is a coach.

On that note I would have to agree with you and say Cooksey is an excellent coach and he was mistakenly overlooked in my top five. Please forgive me.

  6. I agree that John Bush has done a wonderful job this year.

Remember he took over a team with NO returning starters that most people had ranked in the bottom of the 16th region. They started out 0-4 and now are playing as a team and have a good chance to win the district.

Hey "SMOKE" good observation. Most people in the coaching community knew Bush could coach. From what I understand from other coaches he had proven that on the national level in AAU. And to do this with a staff of "volunteer" community assistants is even a greater acheivement for Coach Bush. HAHA :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

  7. Done and done, along with someone who coached, someone who announced and several player's parents. I stand by my previous post.:puke::deadhorse:

Hey Spindoc does Ducky think announcing and understanding are the same words?

It's amazing that people don't want to give credit were credit is due.

Bottom line is that Bonner DOMINATED the inside for Ashland and J. Bush DOMINATED Ashlands guard on defense. Why can't people admit this???

  8. Ashland shot very poorly but the open looks were there.:puke::deadhorse:

Open looks???? I'm not sure what game u were watching. I pretty much remember "the Heisman" putting on what could have been the best defensive performance to date in the region. If you don't believe me just ask someone else who actually watched the game. Or better yet someone who played.

I'd have to agree with "Newman" maybe the players missing the "open shots" were who RH wanted to shoot. HMMM.

Just a Thought. My wife says I get one a week.

  9. The list has some good frosh on it but is also only one man's opinion. To have Whetsel from Ashland ( who is a good player ) but not have Terry and Gregg is kinda funny. Especially if you watched the Rose Hill vs. Ashland game. But we have to remember Mr. Demling is probably going on publicity and not actually watching these kids play in person.
