  1. I was kind of surprised some thought this was an upset. Since the 2nd half of the Male game, Eastern has been in a real tailspin.

Pre-season most thought Ballard would finish at the rear of a very tough district. Coach Jackson should be in the running for 6-A COY if the Bruins keep up the strong play.

We (Western) go out to Ballard for the regular season finale. Hoping for a dry night as both teams have some serious speed, which should make a great game for the fans to see.

  2. Congrat Coach Boyd, on getting off on the right foot in the district.

    any stats on the game??

    Western:

    O. Wilson 6-11 190 yards 3 TD 0 INT / 7 rushes 99 yards 2 TD

    D. Turner 19 carries 142 yards 2 TD

    C. Ricketts 3 catches 85 yards 2 TD

    L. Melvin 3 interceptions (7 for the season)

    Fairdale

    B. Vincent 12-21 313 yards 3 TD 3 INT

  3. I'm going to be seeing J-town this week on my broadcast, a team that has surprised a lot of people with a pretty solid start.

Anyone have any details about the Chargers they can share? I know they have plenty of speed and that's about it. What do they run offensively and defensively?

We (Western) dealt them their first loss last weekend, in a tough hard-hitting game. J-Town runs a spread offense (with no TE's) with a decent QB (#17) and several good RB's (#'s 2, 4 & 28). O-Line is not very big as O-Lines go, but Coach Weider is a line coach, so they are very technique sound. #5 is a very good WR, big play potential. They were about 50-50 run/pass in our game.

J-Town runs mostly a 3-4 (or 5-2), although we saw an even front some last week. They use very small, quick defensive linemen and solid LB's. Their DB's play lock man all over the field.

As long as Coach Weider and staff are at J-Town, look for them to keep improving. I'd make them the district favorite this year.

If Morrow shared the hoopers, they would be even better.

  4. Just keep coaching em up, they are coming around and a little success this week could be the catalyst for a great year.

Right on some guy. This week we play the "Shively Bowl" vs. a resurgent Butler team. Butler is less than 3 miles from Western and about half of our players live in the neighborhood right across the street from Butler. So I expect a amped game Friday.

  5. Not just 4A. Didn't they just lose to 6A Bryan Station only 21-17 last week??

Yeah Mike. It was especially painful watching the game on film the next day. We had three different chances (with the ball inside LBS's 20) to go up 17-0 in the 2nd quarter and didn't. Also we took a sack with 8 seconds left in the half in 2nd down at the LBS four, keeping us from improving on our 10-7 lead at the time. That was a back-breaker. LBS came out and dominated the LOS in the second half as we ran out of gas a little. Not to make excuses, but we had 4 starters not make the trip due to the flu and our best RB (who had 177 yards on 19 carries last night) sat out serving an in-school suspension.

Jeffersontown is a good football team. We had our hands full up until the very end of the game. They just ran up and down the field, but we turned them away a couple times down close.

We do have a lot of speed and talent, but it's going to take us to gel as a group, mature as a TEAM and stop all the silly little mistakes before we make plans to go very far in the playoffs. But if we can do those things, we're certainly talented enough to make it to December.

  6. Station is 4-0 after tonight's win. Tough battle, Western is pretty darn good and has some outstanding talent. The QB #18 and the WR #2 are amazing, after putting 34 on Male they gave the Defenders all they could handle. If anyone wants a sleeper in 4A I pick Western.

We just can't seem to finish. That and we're just not mature as a football team. Taking a sack with 8 seconds left up 10-7 in the half inside the LBS 5 was really a back-breaker for us.

I thought we did a good job changing defenses and keeping McCaden bottled up in the 1st half, he only had one long run, but it set up their lone 1st half TD. He and Arnett both wore us down in the 2nd half.

And again just like Male, LBS was better physically up front and got our D got a little tired in the 2nd half. Offensively we couldn't sustain anything that kept the defense off the field for any period of time.

IF we can "grow up" before the playoffs start I think we can make a deep run in 4-A.

  7. Just curious to see what everyone's thoughts on this were. This surprises me that it happened and I'm curious as to what the consequences should/will be.

From this morning's CJ: "When it was over, there was a heated exchange between the teams after the Male student section rushed the field and attempted to plant a flag on the Eastern “E.” Also at midfield were the initials “JAS” to honor retiring Eastern principal James A. Sexton."

Has anyone witnessed an opposing team's fans rushing the field to plant a flag at mid field? This could have gotten very ugly, very quickly.

I traded films with a Male coach this morning. He told me this went back to last year's game in which Eastern beat Male. Also one of Male's #1 RB's scored a TD with 14 seconds left in a 34-18 game might have helped stir the pot.

  8. I thought Desales beating Western by a 9 points was a big suprise also. Western is supposed to be loaded the year. The coach said they had like 10 offensive and 10 defensive starters returning. Thats a team that beat Central last year.
I'm on the Western staff and I was not surprised. DeSales has 24 seniors on a team that barely dresses 50 players. They have been one win from the 2-A title game two times in the past four years. If anything I was surprised how bad our kids played. They got the best of us up front on both sides of the ball and our QB showed the game rust of not playing in essentially two seasons. I'm thinking DeSales will make another deep run in 2-A. The 10 starters on both sides of the ball was before several seniors (3 were 2-way starters) recently made choices to not be part of our team this year.

As far as biggest surprise, I'd have to go with Holy Cross winning so easily.
