  1. Trying to remember stats and games and opponents is a lot for my small brain, so I went to the KHSAA website because from what I rememberCarson had his best games and scored the most points vs the "big" boys. Someone on here mentioned his stats were inflated because Owen's schedule was soft.

    South Laurel 24

    Henry Clay 33

    Trinity 24

    Taylor Co 28, 11 rebs, 8 ast

    Ballard 24

    Simon Kenton 33

    North Laurel 43

    North Oldham 32

    Anderson Co 32

    South Oldham 40

    Oldham Co 29

    South Oldham 38

Not to shabby. I also notice that against some of his lesser teams he didn't score much, probably played half the game. Don't talk about scoring on weak teams if haven't looked at the stats.

2016 Mr. Basketball - Carson Williams

  2. I thought this thread was about who's MrBasketball for this year? It has gone into who is better d1 prospect. Where they go to school should not be a point of consideration. I've watched all the players mentioned here and are all excellent and would be a fine choice. I have to admit that having a son play in region 8 I've watched Carson Williams play many more games so i may have a slight bias, but I think he is the Mr Basketball for KY this year. What he does and has done for his team is impressive. Other than parents and coaches, none of us know a kids work effort. All i know is they all have had to work hard to achieve the success they have had. In the end it won't make a difference to any of them as they all have their college plans on place. Best of luck to them all.

Amen!!! This thread (which I'm not sure who started this thread ) was about who you thought would win Mr. basketball in KY, but it's gotten off track a bit. Thanks for getting us back on track.

  3. Just for the record this thread was started for people to give their Top 3 Mr. Basketball Candidates and then tell who they thought would win.

Just a fun prediction after the KABC Region POY were announced. It's gotten a bit out of hand, and some people are choosing to be negative and derogatory toward others. Be positive about who you think deserves to win and don't say negative things about other players.

    TOP 3

    Faulkner - Williams - Goodin

2016 KY Mr. Basketball- Carson Williams

  4. And who would you say is? I have seen several of the young men mentioned in this thread play this year...not all of them but some of them. And of the ones I have seen, it's not close...Williams is the best high school player of the bunch. If he doesn't win it I will just have to shrug my shoulders and wonder what were the voters thinking.

That's not to say that the other kids aren't fine players, cause they are, but CW is a cut above.

I agree... The other players mentioned are terrific basketball players, and I'm sure great young men as well, and will have great college careers. But CW is the best overall HS player. If he doesn't win it this year I'm not sure what it takes to win.

  5. My Top 3 are:

    Faulkner

    Williams

    Gooden

My pick for Mr. Basketball is Carson Williams. IMO he is the most valuable and complete HS player in KY. He has carried them to a 27-3 record with a beefed up schedule for a Class "A" team with wins over South Laurel, Henry Clay, Taylor County, North Laurel, South Oldham, and Oldham County.

On a side note, in all the games I've seen him play no one has played with more effort. I never saw him take plays off or play lazy defense. He is a work horse who plays the game the right way. It's never about him, he plays for his team first. That's who I want to represent KY as our Mr. Basketball.

  6. So you are saying everyone should just be silent on any comparisons in life? Or in this case, two high school players, Larry Bird and Carson Williams? This whole topic is about high school Larry Bird, not the NBA version. Is it that hard to understand!?!?

No, not at all. I completely understand your point, but unfortunately I didn't get to see Larry Bird play in HS. I am a huge Carson Williams fan, so if you say they are comparable at the HS level I'll have to take your word for it.

I just think it's tough for people b/c the comparison is with one of the all-time NBA greats. Most people only know Bird late in his college years and in the league, not what kind of player he was like in HS.

I'm not hating about this thread b/c like I said I believe Williams should be the 2016 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. I just hate some of the negativity by others.

  7. I don't think it's fair to compare HS kids to other college players let alone NBA players.

Carson is an amazing HS player, and if he continues to progress will be an outstanding college player. NKU got a steal with this kid.

Just let Carson be Carson. A kid who I think is this years Mr. Basketball and a future KY HS Hall of Famer. We should all enjoy watching these kids and stop comparing.

  8. The SOS argument in this case doesn't really apply here. Owen has six or seven wins and lost three competitive games against Sweet 16 caliber teams. It's not like he loads up his stats on the dregs of the schedule and disappears against the top teams, either. Carson had 43 points yesterday against a North Laurel team that started 6-8, 6-6, 6-5, 6-5, and 6-2. They double and triple teamed him whether he had the ball on the block or had it in back court. Didn't matter, he scored whenever and however he wanted. He is the 100% focus of the defense every night out. He guarded Peyton Broughton for a lot of the game, and while Broughton scored 30 (mainly because he has unlimited range from three), Carson blocked Broughton's last shot when the game was on the line to send the game to OT.

He may not be the highest rated "college prospect" in the state this year, but he is the best high school basketball player in the state of Kentucky.

    Agreed, well said!!!!

  9. I'd take Goodin over Williams. Just looking at a simple fact that Goodin has done his damage against a lot better competition than Williams. Taylor County's opponents have a 66.5% winning percentage while Owen County's is just 54.3%. This means a lot to me but may not to others.

Owen's opponents winning% is lower than Taylor's, which totally accurate. Part of that is bc Owen's district & conference is way down and they have to play those teams. You would think that a win over the pre-season #1 team in the state would help your case, but they're 13-8. Numbers can be deceiving.

  10. The real question is what is the the true criteria for Mr. Basketball? Is it one or two games, one season, or a collective career?

My opinion is that it would be which player has represented the "state of Kentucky" best as a whole and not just one season. 4 years of Team success, strength of schedule, other teammates success, and lastly individual success.

    Team Success:

    Taylor County

    2012-2013 16-15 District Champs

    2013-2014 26-7 District Champs / Region SF

    2014-2015 28-5 District Champs / Region Champs

    Owen County

    2012-2013 20-10 District Champs

    2013-2014 18-10 District Champs

    2014-2015 26-6 District Champs / Region SF

    Strength of Schedule (2015-2016)

    Taylor County

    Record of Opponents

    Wins 141-93

    Losses 120-33

    Total 261-125 (63%)

    Owen County

    Record of Opponents

    Wins 196-202

    Losses 52-19

    Totals 248-221 (53%)

I will not post the team schedules because you can look for yourself on KHSAA, but their is very little comparison to the strength of the schedule this season. Plus Taylor still has Murray, Dunbar, and Hoptown left on their schedule. It matters a lot on whom you are putting the numbers up against.

Other players success. I am not sure who Carson has played with over his career, but Goodin has played with Caleb Wiggington (2002 point career), Brandon Berry (1000 point scorer), Cameron Morgeson (1000 point scorer), David Sloan (Surpassed 1000 points a few weeks ago), and Ezra Oliver (on pace to score 1000 points). Seems Goodin would have to pass the ball and share a lot of scoring for these players to achieve this success.

Also would like to mention that Goodin led his team to Rupp Arena and the Sweet 16 last season while being the only Junior on the 1st team All State.

Owen County vs. Taylor County Head to Head (Owen won by 12)

    Goodin 30p 6r

    Williams 28p 11r

Anyone that saw that game knows Williams wasn't the reason they won that game and Goodin wasn't the reason they lost. McDonald going 5-5 on 3s in the first half was the difference.

You be the judge on who fits the criteria of Kentucky's MR. Basketball.

Not that it's a big deal, but when Taylor and Owen played head-To-head at KOB Williams finished with 28 p / 11 r / 8 a. Pretty impressive stat line in a high profile game when the two leading Mr. Basketball candidates faced each other.

  11. IMO Goodin is the most talented player, but Williams is the most valuable player

Agreed, Goodin might have more stars by his name nationally; but Williams IS the most valuable player in KY. He can do everything; score above the rim, shoot, rebound, pass, handle the ball, block shots, guard all 5 spots on the floor. I'm gonna head up to Owenton to watch him again. I'm a believer!!!!! 2016 Mr. Basketball

  12. IMO Williams has to be the front runner for Mr. Basketball. I saw Williams & Goodin play this week at the KOB. If I had a vote it would go to Williams because of what he does for his team on a nightly basis as well as how he plays the game. I saw a few monster dunks from the kid and he never showboated, he ran back down the floor and led his team on defense. Williams is the most complete player in KY. After talking with a few of their fans I heard he is a 4.0 student too. Total package.
