  1. Sorry Mamma Bear, just something about that Stadium where Highlands vs. Harlan played last year in the playoffs was just classic. Loved the place. Pure football.:thumb:

Cawood is my Alma Mater and will always be special to me too, but come back and visit when this new facility is complete. Over the years there has been a lot of sacrifice by a lot of men who have worked very hard moving coal out of the mountains so that their youngins can have the things they need. All of them wanting more for their kids than what they had. I believe that when the Black Bears take the field on Friday night's at Coal Miner's Memorial Stadium that they will honor the men and women who have helped worked so hard to provide such a nice play go play and watch a football game in the mountains. We're all excited here! Anxious for this season to begin and hope we may be able to squeeze a game in on this new field this year.

  2. When I think of a smashmouth team a few things come to mind:

    1. Power set on offense- I formation, Power I, Wishbone, T formation, maybe even Wing-T.

    2. Having a bread and butter run play (like an Off-tackle Power) that the coach doesn't care to call on 3rd and long or 4 & 5.

    3. Maybe some option.

    4. One old coach on the sideline that says everytime an incomplete pass is thrown, "Only 3 things can happen when you throw the ball and two of them are bad!"

    5. Fans yelling "Pass the ball!!!" every time a run play only gets a yard or two.

For colleges, Stanford under Harbaugh was about as smashmouth as it gets these days I think. It was pretty cool to watch, I hope the new coach continues that style of ball. If I had a team I would want them to be "bad" enough to run one or two run plays (power and counter-gt) all game. I'd want to even tell the defense which side we were running too .

    Hmmmmm this sounds familiar.

  3. I am so proud of all our boys. We have had player after player step up and fill in with all the injuries. The "Filthy Animals" were ROCKIN' last night. They were playing beastly, hard hitting, smash mouth football and I loved every single minute of it. PCCs defense on the other hand couldn't stop our offense. Our boys ran it up the middle over and over and over last night. I was smiling when I left the field last night and I was smiling when I got up this morning. SOOOOOOOOO PROUD IS THIS MOMMY BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The boys have the will to win no matter what obstacles have been set before them. Couldn't be any prouder! Coach Larkey is doing what he set out to do when he came here. It's happening. Fun to watch things unfold here in Harlan County as each year progresses. The Black Bears are on a ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the heart of of seniors this year too. Good example for the young guys coming up.

  4. Coach Larkey is fantastic; no doubt about it! I would also like to say that our defensive coordinator, Coach Canady, does a fantastic job of having our "filthy animal" defense ready each week. The defense played awesome against Letcher. Letcher's QB didn't get anything. The defense was all over him each and every play.

Now the Bears are traveling to North Laurel for another district matchup............GO BEARS!!!

    :thumb:

Glad to have both here in Harlan County!

  5. What happen Bear Paw? They did this last season over there. Came back in the playoffs last season and beat Southwestern and redeemed themselves thankfully, but I thought we were more prepared this year. The coaches will right the ship, but I'm sure this was awful to watch. It was hard to listen to. This is too good of a team to go let this happen. We'll be alright. Got a few games to get ready before district play. We knew going in that Pulaski was a good team and had a lot returning, but it sounded like once the Black Bears got down that they just couldn't recover.

  6. “Eastern Kentucky is pretty rabid about high school sports. I think it’s great. It’s Smalltown America and it’s wonderful. Nothing better.”

    Rabid:

1 a : extremely violent : furious b : going to extreme lengths in expressing or pursuing a feeling, interest, or opinion

    2 : affected with rabies

Oh well, If the shoe fits....

  7. Who can name a player that we've not heard much about that will have a breakout year?

QB Jordy Brewer will be a Jr. this year and I think he is ready to go. I can't think of anybody who has worked any harder than this kid to improve his game. He's built a lot of muscle and Coach Eddie Creech has worked with him continuously. He's been patient and kept working hard. He should have a break out season this year and be a leader for the Black Bear offense. Also, Jr. OL Mike Smith is a HUGE kid and should be clearing a big path for the Black Bear backfield.

Senior DE/TE Jordan Calton will wreak havok on opposing teams offenses. Expect another HUGE season from him along with OL/DL Sr. Brian Owens and DL/FB Jeremiah Eldridge.

    RB Jr. Marcus McMillian-lightning

    RB Jr. Cody Taylor-thunder

WR/DB Sr. Dylon Smith who returns this season after an injury from last season will make a HUGE difference. He has speed, real speed! We hope everybody has forgotten about him.

Sophmores LB/FB Tucker Lewis, DB/QB Austin Maggard, LB/RB Jake Middleton each started last year as Freshmen and are stronger and faster than last season.

Could be a couple of incoming Freshmen turn some heads this year. That bunch of Freshmen are full of talent and enthusiasm.

I can go on?? LOL I'm leaving out a bunch I know.

  8. Letcher won the district last year and returns just about everyone-so I don't see how Harlan County could be favored.

It was a three way tie for district and a non distirct game decided the first seed last year. This district is very competitive and is up for grabs. Harlan County returns 9 defensive players and I believe 5 or 6 on offense. Should be able to do a lot more offensively this year and the defense will be very solid again this year. They've been dedicated during the winter and spring. I think this year HC will go over the hump and will have an outstanding season. Glad to have Dylon Smith back from his injury. He's a special player on both sides of the ball. I believe we'll have a lot to cheer about this year!! Go Bears!
