  1. Good comeback by Henry Clay. Down 18 in the 3rd. Prince Stewart out for the game.

For Henry Clay - Senior TJ Barnes lead the way with 18. Freshman Wes Kimball had 11 and Sophomore Brandon Wilder had 15, all in the 2nd half.

Botkin was the star of the game. He was fantastic for LexCath and ended with over 20. Hit cruicial free throws down the stretch.

  2. By the way, I forgot to mention a very classy thing by Coach Brown and Coach Kelly.

The Linton kid, a senior, sat out all season with a medical condition. Tonight was senior night, and he got to start.

The coaches had agreed in advance to let him have the ball on the opening tip and score a basket. Then they let Henry Clay score an uncontested basket in return. Lafayette immediately called a timeout and took Linton out.

That was one of the finest examples of class and sportsmanship by two high school coaches that I have seen lately. Really nice, considering the bad stories we hear about so much.

  3. Henry Clay has now won their last 4 games, including another top 10 team in Dunbar last week. They are a young team, that is really starting to come together the last few weeks. They lost 3-4 late-game heartbreakers early in the season. Now they are beginning to finish.

HC has also been hampered by some key injuries. Senior Bradley Tilford (their tallest player) has been out lately, along with Brandon Nichols (soph). Brandon Wilder(soph) who was starting early, had an ankle sprain in mid-December and was out 2-3 weeks. He is just now beginning to get back into game form.

A freshman point guard (Wes Kimball) is starting to get a lot of playing time for Henry Clay. Keep an eye on this kid, he is something fun to watch.

Should be fun at Henry Clay on Friday nite against Mason.

  4. Henry Clay lead until mid-way of the 4th. Then Bryan Station got up by 9 with about 2 minutes to go. Then HC had a run to cut it to 2-3 points with about 20 seconds to go.

Was a fun game, with a good crowd for both teams. Only negative was a fight in the crowd in the 2nd half.

Bryan Station is definitely a top 10 team in the state IMO. Much better than I expected considering what they lost. At times you could tell they missed Mack's steady hand.

Henry Clay is very young, but are playing an exciting form of ball this year. They will surprise some teams (already have beaten #8 Christian County Saturday). By end of the season, they will be dangerous. And should be very strong next season.

What a district with Scott County, Henry Clay and Bryan Station. Then you have Dunbar, LexCath, Tates Creek, and even a good LCA team. Lexington is definitely staying strong basketball wise.

    Henry Clay Stats

    ================

    Prince Stewart (Senior) 21

    Marquel Johnson (Junior) 17

    Brandon Wilder (Soph) 13 (+ 6 rebounds)

    Daniel Keisling (Soph) 7

    Trey Stewart (Soph) 2

    TJ Barnes (Senior) 4

    Bradley Tilford (Senior) 2

  5. Rebuilding year for Henry Clay, which will start 4 new players this season. Only returning starter is Prince Stewart.

Some of the key returning players .....

    TJ Barnes - Senior

    Bradley Tilford - Senior

    Marquel Johnson - Junior

    Brandon Wilder - Sophomore

    Justin Henderson - Sophomore

    Trey Stewart - Sophomore

Although they will be younger and inexperienced, they do have a lot of potential. They should improve through the year, and should be even tougher by next season. The 3 sophomores (Wilder, Henderson, Stewart) all played as 8th graders for Henry Clay, so this is actually their 3rd year on the team. Their Freshman and JV teams were very good last year, and each only lost 4-5 games throughout the season. Look for the sophomores to be key players on this team.

Of course their district and region are very very tough.

  6. It would be interesting to hear the logic of the KHSAA.

With Euton a UK recruit and also trying to play at Scott County, I cannot imagine the pressure that will be brought on the KHSAA.

In the end, I guess just too many potential D1 prospects transferring to the same school in too short a time frame.

It will be interesting to see if the KHSAA makes any further rulings about Shotwell, Flannery, or the Scott County program itself.

  7. My understanding is you get invited to BG's elite camp several ways. Most of the local players are recommended by their high school coaches. The camp contacts the coaches and ask who they think is good enough to send. So for the majority (of the KY kids) it is just up to their High School Coaches.

Others come through recommendations, or kids UK is already interested in/or recruiting.

I think Billy G mainly started this to generate interest in UK, especially with the KY kids. It is a great way for the UK coaches to invite 150 kids in and evaluate them. And the kids get to go back and say they went to the UK "elite" camp.

Technically I don't think it is an elite camp. But still a good chance for a lot of local talent to get seen by UK, and for them to play against some of the higher national talent. Overall a good think for UK and the high school kids.
