  1. WV has a pretty balanced 6th grade team and they are well coached. There aren't too many 6th grade coaches with a region championship under their belt.

Moeves from WV guarded Barker during the 7th grade game and did a pretty good job. McNeil from WV was the match up problem for Conner. He had about 20 of WV's 33 point.

Great showing for WV! Is that Sullivan coaching the 6th grade??? WOW! That's one heck of a middle school coach, 6th, 7th or 8th!!!!

  2. 7th grade win is big, considering the talent of the Conner team. I would have to politely disagree with McNeil being the smoothest 7th grader in the state. I would agree with NKY, state - I'm thinking there are a couple of players in that mix, if not better. He definitely has a quick release on his shot and sees the floor well.:thumb:

I'm gonna guess the 8th grade game was a blowout for Conner?????[/QUOTE]

Yes it was. Smoothest in the state is a stretch but he is a very nice player. The WV 6th grade team jumped on Conner early and it was never really a game. WV was up 20 pts before the Conner coach called a timeout.

The 7th grade game was a fun game to watch. Conner lead 3 to 0 and 3 to 2 but i don't believe they ever lead after that. Playing on the small floor at Conner Middle School makes things that much more difficult against Conner's size. They meet again in about 2 weeks.

Who does Conner and WV have at the 6th grade level?

Who guarded Barker for Conner from WV? I would think he would be a matchup problem for WV and the 2 guard for WV would be a match up problem for Conner.

  3. Walton 6th won by more than 30. Walton 7th won by one point. McNeil is the smoothest 7th grader in the state. I didn't stick around for the 8th grade game.

  4. Flop - as you see by a few of the replies the horn does not dictate play. The officials do. Its a live ball even if the horn goes off accidentally.

Ex: If A1 is dribbling and the horn goes off inadvertently it would be a double dribble if A1 stopped when he/she heard the horn then restarted when she realized that the officials had not stopped play.

I hate to disagree, but an inadvertent buzzer that creates an unfair advantage results in the possessing team taking the ball out of bounds close to the proximity of the last possession of the basketball.

  5. Here's a list of all the dates this year, according to the state AAU website. D1 and D2 are played the same weekend in all age groups.

    March 6-8 Boys' 8U & 10U State Tournament

    March 13-15 Boys' 9U & 11U State Tournament

March 20-22 Boys' 12U State Tournament

March 27-29 Girls' 9U/10U/11U State Tournament

    April 3-5 AAU Boys' Super Regional 10U - 14U

April 17-19 Boys' 13U State Tournament

April 24-26 Boys' 14U State Tournament

    May 8-10 Girls' 12U & 13U State Tournament

May 15-17 Boys' 15U/16U/17U State Tournament

May 29-31 Girls' 14U/15U/16U State Tournament

June 12-14 Girls' High School State Tournament

June 18-21 Boys' High School State Tournament

    July 13-19 Boys' 10U DI/DII National Championship

Do you think many U13 or U14 teams from KY will play in the Super Regional in early April at KBA? Sometimes this event has brought in some very good nationally ranked teams. Thoughts??

  6. I have mixed feelings on the DI,DII debate. We played DI and won a game with our school team, Played the Legends really close for 3 quarters, and got beat pretty badly in the other two. We finished 4th in the DI state and it made us better. On the other hand, I watched the Johnson Central team we beat by 12-15 in the 6th grade middle school state semi-finals walk away with the DII state championship trophy. I really can't say either way but I do think 12/u DI and DII this season will not be that much different. 13/u I think there is a big difference. I do think if I were the Wildcats 10/u and had won the state last year I would have to try DI just to see. Good luck guys, whetever you decide.

I'm curious who will be the D1 teams in U12 and U13 this year. Any ideas????

  7. More development happens in the driveway than on/in the gym. Most kids that have any background in organized basketball know what they need to work on to get more playing time...pending how their school coaches run their offenses and defenses. Personally speaking, most of the middle school kids need to stop practicing shooting the 3 and figure out how to play "D"

:thumb:Amen! Most kids are never taught the fundamentals of man and are used to playing just zone, that they can't do both. They don't know how to help or deny when their man doesn't have the ball, just as much as playing good on the ball defense.

  8. Boomer, you were just curious what people thought about which team prepared this young man to play HS ball at a young age. I offered a couple of other factors that could have been just as important. Kids that grew up when I did didn't play organized sports year round and they improved and competed pretty well. I am not an AAU naysayer, as you call them, but I don't think you need to play in leagues or tourneys year round to improve.

Your initial question compares 4 months of school ball versus 12 months of AAU. Which team should better prepare a player for HS ball?

I'm pretty sure his AAU team didn't play 12 months per year, Maybe 6 or 7. I asked the question already knowing the answer. I didn't mean to get into a shooting match with you, I was just jabbing one at the blah, blah, blah AAU ball is the devil folks.

  9. I have no idea who this boy is or where he plays-- but maybe it has nothing to do with either. Quite possibly he worked hard growing up playing in the neighborhood/park/backyard courts with friends and / or siblings. I would guess neither team gave him his size or strength that makes him competitive at a higher level.

I have always believed that great players in any sport are made in the offseason. The problem is there is no offseason. AAU has replaced the offseason.

    And that's a problem?????

  10. For all the AAU naysayers...... Do you think it was his school team or his AAU team that prepared Mason Monroe to develop his skills to play and start varsity as an 8th grader????? Just curious......

  11. By high school, the majority have matured to the same level. That is not typically not the case in fifth thru eighth grades.

An 18 or 19 year old's physical makeup is definitely different than a 17 year old! In fact if we polled the board, most people would say they grew in height after they turned 18. Not by much, but still a difference.

  12. Actually, go 5-10 years on down the road and you see them as successful businessmen, fathers, and making large contributions to society. That is when you can really smile. You can realize that just maybe something you said or did made an impact on a young man's life and made him a better human being. I always feel that if I could just make a big difference in one young man's life that I have accomplished more than wins or losses could ever mean and no one likes to win any more than I do. I think there are a LOT of terrific coaches in AAU and just a few poor ones.

There are also poor coaches in school ball. Great posts by southernky and afiguy. AAU was designed to develop young athletes into contributing adults. Similarly, schools are supposed to do the same thing. Unfortunately, in both areas their are a few bad apples. I'm sure we can agree on that Weakside;)

  13. The league is wide open right now... Top 5 teams could beat each other on any given Sunday... Bulls lost a tough one last night. Tied with a minute to go with Flash, seemed like one of the three officials took it upon himself to be the show... Not sure why this game had three officials but it made the game worst at the end... Those corner courts are too small for three officials and 10 players... It was a great game that the players should have got to decide but didn't go that way... Answer this, how can an official take a point off the board, when the official book and scoreboard (SOAS employee) had it right?

The official can't - Only the individual working the "official book" can change the score after conferring with the officials. The official in question likes to be the center of attention. I was also curious as to what happened to have 3 officials on the floor. Very interesting???????

  14. The only published rankings I am aware of go like this (taken from another recruiting website.

    1. Portwood

    2.Hatton

    3.Snyder

    4.Cunningham

    5. Davis 6'3" lexington... I've only seen him once

    6.Washington Lex Cath

    7.McCormick

    8. Johnson 6'2" Lexington Sayre

    9. Grundy

    10.Dishman...Somerset

    11. Snoop Johnson

    12. Burns.. Fleming Co

    13 DJ Johnson.. Lexington??

14 Langford.. Clinton County He plays the 4 for us and has grown to about 6'0".. He is a very nice player with great instincts

15 Hall.. Johnson Central..the most underrated player on the board in my opinion.

I think 3 or 4 of these kids are overrated and 2-3 of the kids you mentioned from Northern Ky could easily make this list. Langford and Hall were added this fall after their impressive performances in the middle school state tourney. I think Portwood and Hatton are 1-2, after that it's a crap shoot.

After hearing about and seeing Shane Hall in action, I would say he's probably more like top 5 in the state, maybe top 3! The kid is a stud and can play all 5 positions on the floor.

  15. Until Mesmerized Mike and Krazy Katie hire a GM, the Bengals will continue to flounder in futility. They burnt out a good coach and trying to wear down a future Hall of Fame QB. However, if I'm in their shoes and I'm making the profit they make year in and year out, I'd probably continue down the mile of mediocrity as well! Go Bengals - I'll just be watching for free from home, if at all.

  16. WOLFPACK Sweep tonight at 8:40 at SOAS. Both Wolfpack teams that played at 8:40 won their respective games. Court 1 was the Meiman 8th grade team beating the Warriors by a couple in OT and Court 2 was the Geiman 7th grade team beating the 8th grade Outlaws by 1.

If the Geiman 7th grade team has all their players, they might pull the upset in the league tournament?????????:sssh:

  17. Winning is what AAU basketball is all about. Don't kid yourself.

Your comment is strange. When is playing a sport at the middle or high school level (school or AAU), not about winning????? A school team of 7th graders could all be kids who should be in the 8th grade and so on and so on and so. Why are their no rules regarding that? Because, as I've said before, as long as you are eligible by KHSAA regulations to play athletics your senior year of high school - it doesn't matter how old or what grade they should be in.

    PLAY BALL!!!!

  18. Congrats to Zach McNeil who was named tourney MVP for the 7th grade division. He has to be one of the top 7th graders in the state. :thumb:

He's definitely a player - but not not top 10 in the state. SouthernKYHoops maybe you could help us out with that list. He's probably not even top 5 in NKY - Brandon Hatton, Nick True, Tom Deters, Tanner Moeves, Zach McCormick, Jalen Beal.....etc...... He's definitely a player though!

  19. I absolutely agree, at least it should be one way or another. Either all the same grade or all the same age. Right now the only kid that benefits are the ones that are held back or have failed.

Why do we constantly have this discussion regarding what it should or shouldn't be?????

The rules are the rules, play by them or don't play........... We're talking about AAU not KHSAA. No disrespect to catfan or bluenation, but the argument that "it's not fair" or "it's not right" plays into an attitude of entitlement. We should teach our kids to deal with the circumstances they are dealt and teach them to learn how to be successful inside of the rules. That's what sports are all about anyway. Teaching kids how to be successful, regardless of the circumstance.

Again, no disrespect, however, it gets tiring to see the same thing hashed over and over every time about this year. Let's talk about AAU basketball, the teams and the players, - NOT THE RULES we agree or disagree with. The latter is no fun!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE TEAMS COMPETING FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE AAU STATE TOURNAMENT THIS YEAR!!!!!
