gold sunrise Posted October 8, 2011 Author Posted October 8, 2011 LEXINGTON — It wasn’t the district opener the George Rogers Clark Cardinals were hoping for, but it made for an exciting affair. The Cardinals traveled to Lafayette on Friday, and fell to the Generals 22-19. With time winding down, the Clark defense stepped up, forcing a turnover on downs with 4:21 to play in the game. On the ensuing possession, Clark senior Pokey Harris, on fourth-and-10, passed to Carl Parchment for a 30-yard gain to put the Cardinals at first-and-goal from the nine. No sooner did Clark fans finish celebrating the play, the Generals’ defense managed to knock the ball loose, recover the fumble and end the drive. Clark fought back though, time and time again finding a way to move the ball. The Cardinals reached the red zone three more times in the contest with the first two ending on a missed field goal attempt and an incomplete pass and the last ending with the aforementioned fumble. The near comeback at the end wasn’t the only time the Cardinals faced adversity. Lafayette led 14-13 after the half and opened the third period by attempting an onside kick. The Cardinals not only recovered, but they ran it back to the Lafayette 12-yard line and a few plays later quarterback Reid Campbell ran it in for a one-yard score to take the lead 19-14. Campbell ran for 23 yards and completed 2 of 6 passes for eight yards. Harris rushed for 138 yards and threw for 84 more. Harris carried the ball 35 times. http://www.centralkynews.com/winchestersun/sports/ws-lafayette-tops-clark-county-2219-20111008,0,4899961.story
