Covington Catholic outfielder Brady Reese and Conner infielder Johnathan Roberts want to play baseball in college.

To make sure that they give themselves the best chance to reach the next level, the high school rivals have joined forces and become teammates on the Kentucky Colonels, an elite summer team based in Florence.

"It's always been a goal to play baseball in college," Reese said. "That's one of the good things about the Kentucky Colonels. They open up some opportunities to play in front of big-name schools."

The Kentucky Colonels, in their 18th year, are affiliated with both Mid-America Baseball and Sandlot Baseball while being a long-standing member of the elite Southwest Ohio League. The program consists of 18-under and 16-under teams. The club was formed by Denny Taney and Walt Terrell in 1994 as a 13-U squad for the SWOL.

Terrell, the former major league pitcher who coaches St. Henry High School, is in charge of the 18-U team. He sees the value of his summer players being seen by the right people.

"Our mission is to give high school kids who want to continuue playing baseball an opportunity to showcase to colleges what they can do," Terrell said. "But you have to play against good teams and good players and play in front of important people, and we think our program can help with that."
