Why Do Schools Begin Practice On Different Days?

Featured Replies

If all teams begin the season at the same time, unless they choose two scrimmages instead of one, then why not start practice on the same day? Or, have one start practice day for those teams that play in Week 0, and a second start practice day for those teams that play in Week 1?

From the Coaches Listserve:

I have been making my schedule for the summer and would like for someone to explain to me why some schools get to start full contact earlier than some. We play an opponent early in the year who will have had 5 more days in pads than we will have. Not that the hitting is a big deal, but getting acclimated to the heat with pads on is my concern.

So why do some get to start earlier?

Well, it was a package deal; you lost June passing leagues, lost your stadium music, had someone show up at your house for no reason, and finally are subjected to some odd-ball sliding scale as to when we can start hitting....football in KY....

I do know it depends on when school starts, but why should a school that starts a week earlier get to hit a week earlier and play on the same date as the team who has less than 5 days of getting acclimated to the heat with pads. Can we just not make everyone the same?

No Chlid Left Behind-All kids are equal and learn the same way and at the same pace. HAHAHAHA-this is true for football also.

I believe it would be good to go after a proposal similar to that of colleges where you have so many practices you can have before your first game…I would like to see starting July 15…5 days of upper’s only 1 2 hour practice for acclimation purposes…after those have been completed…each team gets 25 Practices, not days (2-3 a day practices would count as such) before their first scrimmage.

I believe a few years ago when they quit allowing us to go helmet shoulder pad practices from July 15-First day of full pads; has put us coaches in a bind because of the whole acclimation process.

any such proposal will have to be ran by the basketball coaches 1st!!

who has benifitted the most frrom the "no frootball in june rule"?

I have a quick question. Who told Basketball coaches the entire month of june was a Basketball month...is it? When is the month that football gets in the off-season. Not to mention baseball, what month is theirs?

I DON'T WANT TO HERE JULY THAT IS IN SEASON FOR FOOTBALL.

Simple way to solve it. Just let all schools start the same day. If they want to go once, twice, or three times a day, then let them do it. I have thought the rule they have now with a start of contact determined by the day you start school has been one of the most ignorant rules that has ever existed.

School districts that start school Aug 1, which we do, would have NO opportunity for 2 a day practices if contact started uniformly on Aug 1. We could start practice on July 15, but not have contact for 2 weeks. Practicing football with no pads is like baseball practicing with no bats or gloves. Maybe it can serve a purpose occasionally and for a short time but it is not football. We need the earlier contact time just to get in the number of contact practices we have to have to get ready. If we started school later, then we would move our start time and contact practices later as well. In fact I wish we would do just that. July 15th is much too earlier, in my opinion, but we are tied up by our school start date.

There needs to be a time set for helmet/shoulder pad to get used to the heat. It is hard to go straight to pants and shoulder pads all of a sudden.

I agree totally. We can get a lot done in shells. The kids think it is a lot easier to practice but you can still block and form tackle. We do that in season some, in order to freshen/lighten up practice.

Don’t make sense, going from kiddie pool to jumping in the deep end, we need to wade our way down to the deep end, gradually, it does not match what they want us to do with the heat stuff, three phases helmets, helmets \sh. Pads, full gear = wading down to the deep end. We need our pre-season in three phases and everyone starts the phases at the same time. Contact thud in phase 2 not to ground, phase 3 to the ground, anyway my thoughts. I feel we have a 2 fold problem doing it the way we do it now, contact and the heat

We need a building process with both, contact and heat, and we need time to acclimate for both, both are serious business.

you would think with that video we had to watch for an hour on heat, that they would think about that.

If we want less heat related illness, less traumatic injury we need the time to do It, phase in process since football is collision and is more dangerous and we practice our trade in the elements, we need more preparation because of these factors.
