AIRVES Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Western has multiple starters returning, some three-year starters. 9 on offense, 8 on defense. Also senior-to-be QB Orlando Brown (who sat out as a transfer last year) will take over at QB. The Warriors have multiple weapons of offense including: RB Dominic Turner, WR Romero Brown, WB Cortez Ricketts and RB Stephon Tanga. Junior-to-be DB Leon Melvin will lead the defense. Melvin was an AP honorable mention corner last year that had 9 interceptions, 3 returned for TD's. LB Kenyon Young, another junior-to-be, will also be a defensive leader. Both Young and Melvin have started every varsity game since the start of their freshman year. Senior Raeshon Maxwell will move from DE to LB where he should make big contributions. Sophomore-to-be Jalen Boyd should make an impact as well on defense. The big benefit Western should enjoy is the fact they will have an entire off-season weight-training program, along with a spring practice. The coaches were only hired around the 1st of May and were not allowed to meet with the players until the last Monday of school last year. Coach Boyd's 1st effort at scheduling will make for a big upgrade from last season as the Warriors trade non-district games with Central, Southern, Iroquois, Shawnee, and West Jessamine for Male, Butler, Ballard, Jeffersontown and DeSales. Bryan Station is still on the schedule. The biggest things Western needs to be successful this season is for the offensive line to be productive and to find a way to play disciplined football for 48 minutes - every game. With them, Western can make a run through the west half of the state, as they are athletically as good if not better than anyone. Without those two things, the Warriors will waste a big, experienced senior class and fall out early in the playoffs, as has been the case lately.
