Les Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Girls Top 5 1. Clay County (11-3, 3-0) What’s the scoop: The Clay County Lady Tigers are still rated No.1 in the region, but Middlesboro is breathing down their neck. But until a region team beats Clay County, the Lady Tigers remain No. 1. Surprise, surprise: Clay County posted a 5-2 record during the two holiday tournaments the Lady Tigers participated in, while still riding a 35-game 13th Region win streak during the process. What’s ahead: The Lady Tigers will travel to play Wayne County Friday before hosting Breathitt County Jan. 7. 2. Middlesboro (12-0, 8-0) What’s the scoop: Who would have thought that Middlesboro would be at the No. 2 spot at the beginning of the season? The Lady Yellow Jackets are playing some fine ball right now with wins against region foes South Laurel, Corbin and Whitley County. Surprise, surprise: Just how good are the Lady Yellow Jackets? I’m not sure Middlesboro can beat Clay County, but you never know. Elgie Green’s squad defeated Corbin by 27 points (82-55) a couple of weeks back and received a 15-point effort by Samantha Coleman during Middlesboro’s win over Whitley County. The addition of Coleman and her sister, Shaleesha, have made the Lady Yellow Jackets a contender in the 13th Region. What’s ahead: Middlesboro will travel to play Bell County Friday and will pay a visit to Corbin on Jan. 7. 3. Whitley County (8-4, 5-1) What’s the scoop: The Lady Colonels didn’t fare well during the holiday break, posting a 3-3 record. Surprise, surprise: Whitley County suffered a minor setback by losing to Middlesboro by 10 points (53-43) last week, but look for Larry Anderson’s squad to get back on track. What’s ahead: Whitley County will host Corbin Friday and won’t be back in action until Jan. 11 against Williamsburg. 4. South Laurel (7-6, 2-3) What’s the scoop: After starting the season 0-3, the Lady Cardinals are 7-3 during their last 10 games. Surprise, surprise: The holiday tournaments treated South Laurel kind, as Konnie Snyder’s squad posted a 3-1 record in the Berea Invitational and a 3-1 mark in their own Candy Cane Classic. After losing to Jackson County earlier in the day on Dec. 29, South Laurel came back in the finals a couple of hours later and beat the Lady Generals, 58-46. What’s ahead: The Lady Cardinals will be back in action today at home against Williamsburg before traveling to play North Laurel Friday. 5. Jackson County (11-3, 5-1) What’s the scoop: The Lady Generals dropped a spot after losing to South Laurel in the finals of the Candy Cane Classic. Surprise, surprise: Jackson County posted a 5-3 record during the Christmas break. What’s ahead: The Lady Generals will travel to play Madison Southern on Jan. 12. The Best of the Rest No. 6 North Laurel (5-4, 1-1) What’s the scoop: The Lady Jaguars are struggling at the present time. No. 7 Corbin (7-5, 2-3) What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds hope to get things back on track Friday against Whitley County. No. 8 Williamsburg (7-2, 5-1) What’s the scoop: The Lady Yellow Jackets continue to surprise. No. 9 Cumberland (8-2, 6-1) What’s the scoop: Cumberland keeps rolling along. No. 10. Barbourville (8-4, 6-2) What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers are off to one of their best starts in a long time.
Les Posted January 11, 2008 Author Posted January 11, 2008 I posted last week's above: The new one for this week is here: Girls Top 5 1. Clay County (11-3, 3-0) What’s the scoop: The Clay County Lady Tigers are winners of two straight since losing on Dec. 29. James Burchell’s squad continues its stranglehold on the region’s No. 1 rankings. Clay County has garnered a No. 10 ranking in the Cantrall Ratings. Surprise, surprise: The Lady Tigers picked up a tough road win over Wayne County (52-38) last week and followed that up with an impressive 65-50 victory over Breathitt County. What’s ahead: The Lady Tigers will play Belfry in the Corbin Shootout Saturday and will be back in action two days later against old rival Rockcastle County. 2. Whitley County (10-4, 6-1) What’s the scoop: With Middlesboro’s 18-point loss to Corbin, I’m dropping the Lady Yellow Jackets a couple of notches. Yes, Middlesboro beat Whitley County, but I’m still going with Larry Anderson’s squad. Surprise, surprise: History says the Lady Colonels usually hit a bump in the road during this time of the year, but I believe Anderson’s squad is talented and will get out of the rut. What’s ahead: Whitley County has a road date with rival Williamsburg Friday and will travel to play Boyle County on Jan. 14. 3. Middlesboro (13-1, 9-1) What’s the scoop: Was Middlesboro’s 18-point loss to Corbin a fluke? I don’t think so. The Lady Redhounds are improving each game and to be honest, I wasn’t impressed with the Lady Yellow Jackets. But Middlesboro has talent and is 9-1 in region play, while beating South Laurel, Whitley County and Corbin in the process. Surprise, surprise: The Lady Yellow Jackets responded to the Corbin loss with an impressive 67-31 win over Cumberland. What’s ahead: Middlesboro has a district date with Cawood Friday and will face-off against Williamsburg in the first round of of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Tournament on Jan. 14. 4. South Laurel (9-7, 4-3) What’s the scoop: This team is really hard to figure out. The Lady Cardinals upended rival North Laurel on the road with ease last week and suffered a setback with a road loss against Pulaski County. Surprise, surprise: The Lady Cardinals led Pulaski County 24-5 midway through the first half, and then all of the sudden, but the bottom dropped out. The Lady Maroons outscored South Laurel 37-10 the remainder of the game. What’s ahead: The Lady Cardinals will participate in the Lady Redhound Shootout Saturday and will be back in action Jan. 15 at home against Bell County. 5. Corbin (8-6, 3-4) What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds jump two spots after beating previously unbeaten Middlesboro by 18 points Monday. Surprise, surprise: Corbin is really beginning to hit stride. Mikkah Rogers is turning in a solid effort, while Kelci Jones, Lyndsay Champlin and Rikki Walden are stepping up their play. What’s ahead: The Lady Generals host Pike County Central Saturday and will be back in action Tuesday at home against Knox Central. The Best of the Rest No. 6 Jackson County (11-3, 5-1) What’s the scoop: This spot might be too low. No. 7 North Laurel (6-6, 1-2) What’s the scoop: Things are going south fast. No. 8 Williamsburg (8-3, 5-2) What’s the scoop: Coach Raines is doing a good job. No. 9 Cawood (7-7, 4-4) What’s the scoop: The Lady ‘Skins are improving. No. 10. Barbourville (9-5, 7-3) What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers remain at No. 10.
HDE Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 The only thing I might change is flip-flop Cawood and Barbourville, since Barbourville beat them earlier. Cawood is the Trojanettes by the way.
Les Posted January 12, 2008 Author Posted January 12, 2008 Gosh HDE, I need you to edit my stuff more often. Thanks
