sportsfan54 Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Franklin county has only lost 4 games i believe but they are yet to beat a very good team? can they compete with the teams come tournament time? and how good are the flyers on a scale of 1-10?
Marovich22 Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Franklin County can be tough especially if Donovan is shooting the ball, but they had a tough time over at catholics tournament. i will give them a 6, they are a middle of the road 11th region squad yet in most other regions would be in the top talk
FANOFTHE11th Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Franklin County can be tough especially if Donovan is shooting the ball, but they had a tough time over at catholics tournament. i will give them a 6, they are a middle of the road 11th region squad yet in most other regions would be in the top talkI agree with this statement overall. With regard to the 5th/3rd, Franklin was down a starter and a half for one game, and down two starters for 7 quarters of the last two against Cov Cath and Desales, both top 20 teams. Leading scorer and best athlete Deron Hicks played less than a minute against Christain Co. and did not play against Cov Cath or Desales. Point gaurd Vance Hall was coming off an ankle injury playing at about 60% against Christian Co., reinjured the ankle in the first quarter against Cov Cath sitting out the rest of the game, and the game vs Desales. They played Cov Cath tough most of the game losing by 13. On the 3rd day down two starters they lose to Desales by 20. Not making excuses, just pointing out the facts. Tuesdays game against #13 Dunbar, they go down 13-0 in the first quarter without Deron Hicks on the floor, as he did not start because he was coming off a suspension. When he finally entered the game they competed much better getting within 5 with 2:30 to go in the 4th. Lost by 14 as Dunbar played well and shot lights out (about 59% from the field, and around 65% from three making a total of 8). Again, I agree with the overall statement by Marovich, but I do not think they have played their best basketball as they are young (team has only juniors and sophomores), and they really have not had their best starting lineup for 5 games. Only time will tell if they can compete with the best. Upcoming opponents include: Shelby Co Cov Holmes Scott County Motgomery Co. Madison Central Tates Creek Central Hardin Anderson Co.
doomer Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 I agree FCHS has not played their best ball, and they have a lot of upside. These guys are playing their first season together...the football guys were not in the summer ball, and Donovan missed part of it. When healthy, they have the abilities to compete. So far, between injuries, illness and other, (probably like a lot of teams) FCHS has had a lot of game time missed, or played at less than capability. Donovan is definitely out for at least the rest of this week for ankle sprain suffered in Dunbar, and possibly longer due to illness.
Neutralbutbiased Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 "County" will be a force come tourney time. 4 of their starters have played with teams through the years that have put them in the right situations to understand how to compete. I look for the leadership of Barrett Meyers to come through and lead them with a strong finish. They have one problem technically, a 6'8" person that does not play alot on the block. IMO when/if they make that adjustment it will definitely allow them to compete/win games with stronger opponents.
doomer Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 A contributing factor in both the Dunbar and Cov. Cath. losses has been the situation of getting down early, coming back...to within 5 in the fourth quarter of both games...and then turning the ball over leading to fast break buckets the other way. Those are back breakers. I would see this too as a symptom of having to play different lineups, experience playing together, etc. I would add both Dunbar and Desales hit better than 75% from 3-point. Some because of defense, but it is hard to beat a team that shoots 8-12 or better from three AND you turn the ball over. I would agree that there are times when FCHS should/could take more advantage of their inside game, but the offense they run seems to be geared to also open up the inside for the guards particularly Meyer, Hicks and Hall who are very capable of getting inside and scoring. Almost every game, there are 5 players in double figures.

I agree they need to get the ball down low more but donovan is not a true post player he has played three his whole life...Connor and Watkins could play downlow thought and do some damage. In regards to the dunbar game they played with them for the entire game with the exception of 6 minutes maybe where dunbar just went on huge 10+-0 runs that killed the flyers
