Girls Top 5

1. Clay County (19-4)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers saw their 14-game win streak come to an end this past week against Magoffin County.

Surprise, surprise: Clay County continued to show it’s the top team in the region by defeating Knox Central 65-39 this past week on the road. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be hard to unseat the Lady Tigers as defending 13th Region champs.

What’s ahead: The Lady Tigers take an 11-day hiatus before traveling to play Lexington Catholic Feb. 9.

2. South Laurel (16-6)

What’s the scoop: South Laurel has put together a rather impressive six-game win streak and will clinch at least a two-way tie for the No. 1 seed for the 50th District Tournament with a win at home against Williamsburg today.

Surprise, surprise: Lauren Wombles flexed her muscles and showed why she was rated as the pre-season No. 1 player in the region by scoring 22 points in the Lady Cardinals’ 52-40 win over Knox Central Monday.

What’s ahead: South Laurel will host Williamsburg today before traveling to play North Laurel Saturday.

3. Corbin (15-6)

What’s the scoop: Corbin moves up a spot because the Lady Redhounds are winners of five straight and more consistent than Whitley County.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Redhounds seem to be getting over their injuries, while hitting stride during the process.

What’s ahead: Corbin will host Williamsburg Feb. 2.

4. Whitley County (14-7)

What’s the scoop: Whitley County just doesn’t seem to be getting any type of consistency going right now.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Colonels are 7-6 during their past 13 games.

What’s ahead: Whitley County will host Southwestern Pulaski Friday and Knox Central Feb. 6.

5. North Laurel (12-8)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Jaguars seem to be struggling a bit, too.

Surprise, surprise: Roy Bowling’s squad is dealing with its first losing skid (two games) of the season and it’s going to be interesting to see how his young Lady Jaguars will respond in the upcoming weeks.

What’s ahead: North Laurel will host South Laurel Friday and travel to Monticello Monday.

The Best of the Rest

No. 6 Knox Central (11-11)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Panthers are losers of three of their last four games.

No. 7 Harlan (13-7)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Green Dragons were eliminated in the All ‘A’ State Tournament Wednesday after losing to Newport Central Catholic, 64-31.

No. 8 Bell County (10-11)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Bobcats moved up another spot.

No. 9 Jackson County (10-10)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Generals are losers of three straight.

No. 10 Cumberland (11-9)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Redskins remain in the Top 10 after beating Evarts, 59-56.

South appears to be the only team with a chance to beat Clay. Whitley has the athletes but doesn't seem to be able to put it togeather.
