Fear 'Les' 13th Region Rankings Jan. 11-17

Girls Top 5

1. Clay County (14-3)

What’s the scoop: Clay County is by far the best team in the 13th Region. James Burchell’s squad keeps winning and looks to be the favorite to capture its second straight 13th Region title in a row.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Tigers have won nine games in a row, while beating teams such as Wayne County, Breathitt County and Rockcastle County.

What’s ahead: Clay County will host Jackson County Friday.

2. Corbin (10-4)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds are the surprise team in the region and it’s because of having one of the best coaching staffs in the state along with some very talented players that has stepped up their play.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Redhounds’ 48-47 win over Whitley County has put Corbin in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed in the 50th District.

If Corbin can win the remainder of its district games, the Lady Redhounds will be the No. 1 seed in the 50th District Tournament, but a loss along the way can really mess things up, which could create a three-way tie for first.

What’s ahead: Corbin will travel to play Knox Central Tuesday.

3. Whitley County (11-5)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Colonels had a golden opportunity slip away on the road against Corbin last week, but made up for it with a home win against South Laurel Monday.

Surprise, surprise: It seems as if Whitley County just can’t get anything consistent going. The last time the Lady Colonels won at least two games in a row was back on Dec. 21.

What’s ahead: Whitley County will host Williamsburg Friday and Boyle County Monday.

4. South Laurel (10-6)

What’s the scoop: This team continues to confuse me. On paper, the Lady Cardinals look like they can contend for a region title, but then South Laurel blows a big lead against Whitley County and we can’t forget about its 19-2 advantage it blew against Corbin.

Surprise, surprise: I really thought the Lady Cardinals were hitting stride after their 82-43 win over rival North Laurel. South Laurel needs to get back on track this week.

What’s ahead: The Lady Cardinals will host Pulaski County Monday.

5. North Laurel (9-4)

What’s the scoop: Roy Bowling’s squad suffered an huge setback after losing to South Laurel, 82-43.

The Lady Jaguars did recover by defeating Estill County 48-28 Monday.

Surprise, surprise: The lack of depth on the bench looks like it is taking its toll.

What’s ahead: North Laurel will host Cordia Saturday, Leslie County Monday and Model Wednesday.

The Best of the Rest

No. 6 Knox Central (9-8)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Panthers are 6-1 against 13th Region teams.

No. 7 Bell County (6-9)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Bobcats are a dangerous team.

No. 8 Harlan (5-5)

What’s the scoop: Harlan keeps rolling along.

No. 9 Jackson County (6-6)

What’s the scoop: Why not?

No. 10 Williamsburg (7-5)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Yellow Jackets remain in the Top 10.

The 2,3 and 4 teams from the same district. Williamsburg is saying thank you to the KHSAA. Its ashame one of these teams will be left out of the region.
