The 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament is set to tip off at Morehead State University on Wednesday, March 2.

The first round games for the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament are as follows: Rowan County vs. Raceland, Elliott County vs. Boyd County, Russell vs. Bath County, Ashland vs. East Carter. 

Here's a closer look at each opening round game of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. 

 

Rowan County (16-16) vs. Raceland (12-16): After knocking off Bath County to win the 61st District championship, Rowan County is matched up against 63rd District runner-up Raceland in the opening round of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. Raceland finished runner-up to Russell in the 63rd District. The Vikings and Rams have not met in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. 

 

Elliott County (18-8) vs. Boyd County (21-7): The champion out of the 62nd District, Elliott County is matched up against 64th District runner-up Boyd County in the opening round of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. Elliott County pulled away to beat East Carter in the 62nd District boys' basketball title game. Boyd County is the 64th District runner-up following a loss to rival Ashland. During the regular season, Boyd County pulled away to beat Elliott County 65-52 in a late-season matchup on Thursday, Feb. 10. 

 

Russell (19-7) vs. Bath County (26-4): Russell and Bath County are preparing to meet in an intriguing 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament first round game. The Red Devils defeated Raceland to win the 63rd District title. Entering the postseason as one of the 16th Region's top three teams, Bath County lost to rival Rowan County in the 61st District championship game. The Red Devils and Wildcats split a pair of games during the regular season. Russell pulled away to beat Bath County 54-39 on Saturday, Feb. 12, which was the two teams' most recent meeting.

 

Ashland (23-5) vs. East Carter (11-14): The Tomcats beat nemesis Boyd County to win the 64th District championship and are looking to make another run to a 16th Region championship. Ashland is pitted against 62nd District runner-up East Carter in the opening round of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. The Tomcats and Raiders have not met in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season.
