BluegrassPreps.com 11th Region Boys Basketball Week 6 Review

Another week in the books in the 11th Region and of course its never easy to get games in. If its a pandemic or if its the weather for whatever reason we never know when someone is or isn't going to play and who the opponent will be! Regardless, their was some basketball played this week, lets check out what went on in the 11th Region!

TEAM RANKINGS

1. Lexington Catholic (12-0) - The Knights continue to roll through anyone and everyone they come up against. This week Lexington Catholic picked up 3 wins over Lincoln County, Lafayette, and Madison Central, all by substantial margins. Ben Johnson gets most of the headlines, as he should with his blistering 28 points per game but Jack Gohman and Ryan Russell are also averaging double figures and this team is as balanced as anyone in the state. Congrats to coach Brandon Salsman on picking up his 400th career win this weekend as well. Up next for the Knights are trips to Tates Creek and Paul Laurence Dunbar followed by a home game with Scott County. 

2. Frederick Douglass (9-1) - The Broncos picked up arguably the biggest win of any 11th Region team this past week when they beat George Rogers Clark by 35 points! The rest of the games scheduled for Douglass were canceled due to weather and covid concerns. DaShawn Jackson, Tyson Barrett, and Kai Simpson continue to lead the Broncos this season as they look like a legit threat to Lexington Catholic and the 11th Region Championship! Up next FDHS they host Henry Clay and Scott County before hitting the road to face off with Harrison County and Boyle County. 

3. Madison Central (10-5) - The Indians have the distinct advantage of having played more games then anyone in the region, which in my opinion is only helpful for kids getting used to conditioning. This past week Madison Central picked up wins over Bracken County and rival Madison Southern before dropping one to Lexington Catholic in a game that was much closer then the final score for 3 1/2 quarters. This week the Indians are scheduled to visit Ballard and Bourbon County, two nice road tests! 

4. Paul Laurence Dunbar (6-2) - The Bulldogs played one game this week and picked up a narrow win over district rival Lafayette. Leading scorer Tim Hall is back to his normal production but Cade Hilt has yet to return to the lineup after missing time. The Bulldogs have the potential to beat anyone but don't seem to have put it all together just yet in this crazy season. Up next Dunbar is scheduled to host Lexington Catholic and Lafayette. 

5. Henry Clay (8-3) - The Blue Devils remain on their hot streak having now won 8 of their last 9 games! This week Henry Clay picked up a win over Shelby County before the rest of their games were canceled due to covid concerns. Aziel Blackwell has really put his name on the map this season for Henry Clay. Up next the Blue Devils will head to Frederick Douglass and Bryan Station for 2 pivotal 42nd District match ups!

6. Lexington Christian Academy (7-5) - The Eagles only played one game this past week and they came away with a victory over a previously hot Bryan Station team. Tanner Walton poured in 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Eagles best Bryan Station. This week LCA is scheduled to begin play in the All A State Tournament with an opening round match up with Murray from Region 1. 

This next group of teams is where it gets really difficult to figure out who is playing the best at the moment. You could throw 6-7 teams in a hat and draw them out and probably get an as accurate of a ranking as any. 

7. Bryan Station (4-3) - The Defenders had a rough week losing back to back games to LCA and Tates Creek. The Defenders have cooled down shooting from the 3 lately and it has started to show. This week for Bryan Station is three big district games with Scott County, Henry Clay, and Sayre. 

8. Scott County (5-5) - The Cardinals picked up a win this week over Woodford County then didn't play due to covid cancellations. Scott County has been playing much better lately winning 4 in a row and seem to be coming together. Up next for the Cardinals are games with Bryan Station, Frederick Douglass, and Lexington Catholic. Three HUGE tests to see if Scott County is truly in the mix for the region crown this season. 

9. Madison Southern (5-7) - The Eagles finished the week 2-1 with wins over Franklin County and Perry County Central and a close loss on the road to rival Madison Central. Trent DeVries and Jay Rose continue to pace the Eagles this season. The biggest game on the schedule for Madison Southern isn't a game, its the 44th District draw! This week Madison Southern is scheduled to take on Central Kentucky Homeschool, Boyle County, and Lincoln County. 

10. Great Crossing (4-7) - The Warhawks have played no games this past week due to covid shutdowns. Their is an argument to be made that Great Crossing could be lower or higher in these rankings but the early season win over Franklin County will hold them just ahead for now. Up next Great Crossing is scheduled to play Bourbon County, Western Hills, and East Jessamine. 

11. Franklin County (8-5) - The Flyers picked up a win over Harrison County and a loss to Madison Southern this week. Franklin County could make an argument to be higher but with head to head losses to the 2 teams above them this is where they will stay for now. Up next Franklin County is scheduled to play Western Hills, Bardstown, and Mercer County. All 3 winnable games. 

12. Tates Creek (4-9) - Tates Creek only had 1 game this week but picked up an impressive win over Bryan Station. Creek is another team that at times could be ranked higher or lower. Its an ever changing season in the 11th. Sophomore Sam Parrish continues to pour in big numbers for the Commodores in his breakout season. Up next for Tates Creek are two big 43rd District games with Lafayette and Lexington Catholic. 

13. Lafayette (3-10) - The Generals have dropped 4 straight games including 2 this week to Paul Laurence Dunbar and Lexington Catholic. Lafayette had started to show signs of life recently but seem to have take a step back lately. This week Lafayette is scheduled to play Spencer County, Tates Creek, and PLD. 

14. Frankfort (7-5) - The Panthers finished the week 1-1 with a win over Portland Christian and a loss to Bullitt Central. Lately Frankfort has been playing much better having won 6 of their last 7 games. Big man Jackson Twombly continues to shine averaging 25.5 and 9.1 rebounds per game. This week Frankfort is scheduled to play Danville, Louisville Collegiate, Western Hills, and Bethlehem. 

15. Western Hills (6-7) - The Wolverines didnt play any games this week due to weather and covid cancellations. Up next Western Hills is scheduled to play crosstown rival Franklin County, Great Crossing, Frankfort, and Berea. A big week in the 42nd District for the Wolverines. 

16. Sayre (4-1) - The Spartans haven't played a game in over a MONTH!!! At this point you just hope they get to continue playing and practicing and have a shot in the district tournament. Sayre is scheduled to play 3 games this week with Paris, Bryan Station, and Wolfe County. 

17. Model (5-10) - The Patriots won 3 games this week over Frankfort Christian, Nicholas County, and Jackson County. Model always plays hard and it looks like its starting to pay off for them. This week Model is scheduled to play Bluegrass United, Garrard County, Berea, and Williamsburg. 

18. Berea (1-4) - The Pirates didn't play any games this week but perhaps the biggest news is the resignation of their coach, Ray Valentine. The rumors have swirled as to why, even on this board, but its not my place to get into that. Coach Valentine released a statement that said it was due to family issues and that's what we will go with. This week the Pirates are scheduled to play Rockcastle County, Powell County, Model, and Western Hills. 

19. Frankfort Christian Academy (3-9) - The Royals dropped 3 games this week to Model, Bethlehem, and Trinity Christian. This week FCA is scheduled to play Portland Christian.
