1st Region Week 3 Review

The only two teams who remain undefeated in 1st Region play are McCracken and Murray, and both of those teams had some very close games this week from Marshall and Tilghman.  The matchup between McCracken and Murray is coming on 2/8, but we also have some very interesting games coming this week.  Here are my rankings:

1. McCracken Co. (5-3) - W 64-53 at Marshall (OT), W 67-52 vs Mayfield.

Upcoming week - Tues at Graves, Fri at St. Mary, Sat at Christian Co.

The Marshalls took the Mustangs to Overtime before McCracken pulled away.  Balanced scoring for the Mustangs in that game with four players in double figures (Hart, Brower, Dumas, McCune).  Saturday's game at Christian should be very interesting.

2. Murray (6-1) - W 56-52 vs Tilghman, W 73-50 vs Calloway Co.

Upcoming week - Mon at Muhlenberg Co.

Grant Whitaker scored 25 of the team's 56 points in a close win over Tilghman.  The Tigers' win over Calloway puts them in the driver's seat for the very important #1 seed in the 4th District.

3. Paducah Tilghman (3-2) - L 52-56 at Murray

Upcoming week - Tues at St. Mary, Fri vs Christian Co, Sat vs Marshall Co.

The Tornado only shot 4 for 25 (16%) from three against Murray, and still made it a very close game.  Unfortunately, last Friday's game at Marshall was postponed due to the pandemic - hopefully this upcoming weekend's game against the Marshalls will be a go.  The Tornado has a very balanced scoring attack with five players averaging more than seven points a game.

4. Marshall Co. (2-3) - L 53-64 vs McCracken (OT)

Upcoming week - Friday vs Graves Co., Sat at Tilghman

The Marshalls scored late to force Overtime against McCracken, but the Mustangs pulled away in OT.  Mr. Basketball contender Zion Harmon is averaging 30 points per game for the Marshalls.  This week will be interesting for the Marshalls (hopefully they are able to play).  Games against Graves and Tilghman will determine if they are able to move up in these rankings.

5. Graves Co. (4-3) - W 76-32 vs Fulton City, L 60-65 at Lyon Co, W 61-56 at St. Mary.

Upcoming week - Tues vs McCracken Co., Fri at Marshall, Sat vs. Hickman Co

Two wins and one loss on the week for the Eagles, and Lyon Co is one of the top teams in the 2nd Region.  This will be a very challenging week for the Eagles - maybe a chance to move up the rankings with some impressive wins.

6. Calloway Co (2-5) - L 64-71 at Webster Co., L 50-73 at Murray, L 65-81 vs Lyon Co.

Upcoming week - Mon at Union Co, Tues vs Mayfield, Sat vs Carlisle

Three losses for the Lakers this week, but I kept them here in the rankings since they played three very good teams.  Can the Lakers get three wins this week?  It's a tough schedule but I think it's doable.

7. St. Mary (5-4) - W 75-21 at Fulton City, W 89-53 vs CCA, W 82-49 vs CFS, L 56-61 vs Graves

Upcoming week - Tues vs Tilghman, Thurs at Mayfield, Fri vs McCracken

A very good week for the Vikings, and the loss to the Eagles was very close.  This is a very challenging week ahead, and one game to keep an eye on is the Thursday game at Mayfield - the Vikings won the last matchup by only two points.

8. Carlisle Co. (5-1) - W 78-72 vs Hickman, W 75-48 vs Ballard Memorial

Upcoming week - Sat at Calloway

The Comets look to be the definite favorite in the 1st District.  Can they get a road win this Saturday at Calloway?  That would be a very impressive win.

9. Mayfield (4-2) - W 69-62 vs Fulton Co, W 72-33 vs CCA, L 52-67 at McCracken

Upcoming week - Tues at Calloway, Thurs vs St. Mary, Fri at Ballard Memorial

Another team that has a very big week ahead.  It's very possible that the Cardinals could get all three wins, but the game at Calloway will definitely be a challenge.

10. Christian Fellowship (5-4) - W 56-43 vs Livingston Central, L 49-82 at St. Mary, L 60-67 vs Gleason, TN

Upcoming week - Mon vs Hickman Co, Sat vs CCA

I had CFS replace Hickman Co. this week at the ten spot in these rankings, and now they play them on Monday.  We'll see what happens!

13. Fulton Co (1-5)

14. Ballard Memorial (1-8)
