6A Notebook 10/30: A Seasons End

Featured Replies

The high school football regular season has ended and the playoffs start this week. Those team that made the playoffs will have a chance and start over at 0-0.

The 6A top 10 didn’t have many games last week. Male, Butler, Trinity, Scott County , and Simon Kenton all finished there seasons the week before and had a chance to rest and get healthy for a playoff run. But we did have the #1 #2, #6, #9 and #10 teams in action.

#1 Frederick Douglass traveled to Northern Kentucky to take on Conner. This game was a good test for both teams before a playoff push. The weather Friday night was terrible for almost all games in Kentucky, limiting teams who throw the ball or any big time plays. Frederick Douglass got a tough 20-0 win. Frederick Douglass only passed the ball 7 times in the game, completing only 4 of them for 45 yards and a touchdown. The ground game put up big numbers in this contest, racking up 284 yards. Demarco Fishback accounted for 171 yards and one touchdown. Montaveon Bean had a solid game as well, accounting for 72 yards and a touchdown on just 8 carries. The defense was stout for Douglass, only allowing Conner to just about 150 yards of total offense. The key note was the defense only allowing Conner to just 30 yards rushing. They did, however, have 117 yards in the passing department. The defense also had 3 interceptions in the game plus a fumble recovery. Conner's Tate Neiderman did have a decent game with 7 catches for 55 yards, but it wasn’t enough to help Conner to a victory.

#2 Saint Xavier traveled to Saint Xavier (OH) to take on the Bombers. The Tigers were held to just 88 yards in this game. The Bombers had close to 300 yards of total offense. They only threw one pass for 59 yards, the rest coming from on the ground. The Bombers got the 34-7 win over the Tigers. The Tigers lone touchdown came from the back up quarterback.

The #6 Henry Clay Blue Devils traveled to Cooper to take on the Jaguars. Cooper got the best of Henry Clay in this matchup, 23-7. Henry Clay just seems to not be the same team that defeated Scott County by 24 points just over a month ago. The loss of quarterback DJ Vanhorn may have doomed this team's hopes of a deep playoff run. This win puts Cooper at 4/6 on the season, and could be just what the doctor ordered to get them started for a playoff run.

#9 North Hardin picked up a good win at 5A Doss, 39-8, improving to 8-2 on the season.

#10 Ballard squeaked by Central Hardin, 10-9. This game may look like a concern to some, but it seems that Central Hardin is getting healthy after a brutal schedule and may look a little like they did at the beginning of the season.

The 6A World

Manual proved they can still win without their D-1 stud playing as they picked up a 14-0 win over Eastern.

One of the biggest shocks of 6A was a 20 point win by Bryan Station over Madison Central. We are not sure if Madison Central rested the starters for an up coming playoff run, but it’s still a bad loss for the Indians.

Campbell County lost 28-0 to 5A #1 Covington Catholic. Many thought for a running clock , but the Camels played tough and hung in there.
