With Marion County's win earlier today over Bardstown and Nelson's defeat of Central Hardin, the 5th Region is guaranteed a first-time champion Wednesday.

 

The Cardinals got there by way of a dominant complete-game three-hitter by senior Dominick Lawson, who struck out 11 batters in the victory.

 

Lawson also showed why he's region POY with the bat, belting a two-out, two-run double to start a 5-run inning the Bruins could never recover from.

 

Cameron Lovvorn had an RBI single and scored in the 3rd, and he later doubled and scored to add an insurance run.

 

Nelson County last got to the region finals in 2013 in their last trip to the region tourney. From what I heard, the last time Marion Co. got to the region finals was 1985 (please correct me if that's wrong).

Had a friend call me after the Marion County game and he couldn't quit talking about the pitcher for MC. Andrew Spalding, he said he was going to play college ball at Asbury, but should be going to a D1. Do you know anything about him?

I hadn't seen him since last year but he looked very strong tonight against Bardstown. D-I coaches might see him as being a bit small for their liking but the kid's a good all-around baseball player and could go somewhere better than Asbury.

 

NC's kid, Lawson, could go somewhere better than Ky State, I think. He's a good-sized, strong kid who has a frame that could easily handle more muscle (his older brother is an OL at Lindsey Wilson). Plus he's a lefty.
