1st Region Tournament Preview (Part 1 - Quarterfinals)

 

There is only 1 real intriguing matchup in the first round of the Region 1 tournament. Quarterfinals should be great! All games will be at Murray State University in the CFSB Center

Wednesday March 1:

 

6:00 Hickman County vs Mayfield

This should not be much of a game. These teams met in the regular season and Mayfield won both games by 40+ points. I do not see much of a change in region play. Hickman just isn’t strong enough to hang with the Guthrie brothers and Mayfield. Mayfield wins big.

 

7:45 Paducah Tilghman vs Calloway County

This one doesn’t look like it should be a very tight game on paper, however it could turn into a pretty close game. Calloway County has been playing much better since they lost to PT by 15. Example, Marshall defeated Calloway by 10 just a game before the PT loss, then Calloway defeated Marshal by 12 in the 4th District Championship. Paducah Tilghman has been playing pretty good basketball themselves. I anticipate the game being pretty close through 3 quarters, but the Blue Tornado will pull away in the 4th and win by double digits.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 2:

 

6:00 McCracken County vs Marshall County

This is the most intriguing matchup in the quarterfinals. These two teams split their regular season matchup with Marshall winning in early December by 10, and McCracken winning in mid January by 4. Should be an excellent matchup. Both teams play a similar style of basketball. Both teams play best in the half court relying on defense and good fundamentals. Both teams have a balanced attack while McCracken probably has more weapons than Marshall. McCracken also relies heavily on their 3 point attack while Marshall can hit from 3, they play more inside the arc.

This is a tough one to call, but McCracken has been playing the better basketball lately, so they are getting the nod. McCracken County in a close one.

 

7:45 Graves County vs Fulton County.

These two didn’t play in the regular season, and probably for good reason. This one may be a running clock by halftime. Fulton County lost by 30 or more points to every team in the Region 2 playoff. They made a great run to get here, but it will end here quick. The question will be how long will Coach Frick leave his starters in the game. Graves in a blowout.

Monday, March 6:

6:00 Paducah Tilghman vs Mayfield

 

7:45 McCracken County vs Graves County

 

 

 

Anticipated Finals:

Tuesday March 7 at 6:00

Mayfield defeated Hickman County 66-39 in what was not a very close game.

 

Paducah Tilghman defeated Calloway County in a tight one through 3. It was 43-37 after 3, then PT got it to 53-39 before the Lakers came back. PT won 61-53
